Student Attorney General assistants selected

Staff Wriler
Junior David Maslia, has been named
Student Government attorney general's
executive assistant. The position was
created this semester by the Committee of
Student Conduct because of the heavy
case load being handled by the attorney
general's office.
Attorney General Keith Johnson said
about 150 reports per year are investi
gated, with about 120 cases going before
the Honor Court. It is the attorney
general's duty to examine and look into
reports to determine if they require the
court's attention.
Johnson said he hoped to make some
changes in the attorney general's office,

this state and were found innocent "
Defense attorney Thomas Keith said
the jury apparently concluded that the
CWP provoked the violence. Keith said
major factors in the jury's decision were,
"Trying them twice and the fact that we
portrayed the communists as aggressors
who were trying to capitalize on a situa
tion and cause a riot."

by following up Honor Court cases and
talking with faculty members after a deci
sion has been rendered. The attorney
general's assistant would explore but not
defend the decision made by the court,
Johnson said. In addition, the attorney
general's office is sending a short ques

back on the judicial process.
The attorney general's office will also
expand services to students through other
means. Students accused of violating the
Honor Code may not necessarily have
done so, Johnson said, but often they
"have a lot of other problems, a lot of
other things on their minds." They may
have problems in taking tests, for exam

that warrants counseling, he said.

"I'm shocked and outraged," said a

demonstrator William Sampson. "The
overwhelming evidence for oyer four

found guilty. This just gives the go-ahead
for Klansmen and Nazis to kill people

named Friday, Johnson said. Johnson
said applicants needed to have the ability
to relate with other people while re
maining objective, an analytical mind and
a dedication to the ideals of the system.
The interviewers did not look for
students who hoped to make a career out
of law, Johnson said.
"This is an honor system, not a legal
system," Johnson said.
Next year, the attorney general and his
staff hope to continue in their efforts to
make the Honor Code and the honor
system a force on campus. However,
Johnson said, "The system should never
become something that hangs over some
one's shoulder. We can be too visible."

From Associated Press reports
NEW YORK Police said Monday
that revenge over drug dealings may
have led gunmen to murdef two
women and eight children in their
Brooklyn apartment, leaving the vic
tims on sofas and chairs like figures in
1 a "wax museum."
A crying 11 -month-old baby found
crawling among the corpses was the
only survivor of the Sunday afternoon
massacre, which officials called New
York city's worst mass murder in
memory.
All 10 victims were shot in the head
from the front and some were "almost
in repose," police said, indicating the
shots may have caught them
unawares. A pregnant woman, ap
parently shot as she fed a child, still
had a spoon and pudding can in her
hand.
There apparently was no panic or
struggle. Carmine Rossi, a baker who
found the survivor, said some victims
were sitting on a couch and on chairs
in front of a blaring TV set.
"There were bodies all over the
place," Rossi said. "They were sitting
up. It looked like a wax museum, like
dummies."

But the CIA responded that the
mining was discussed with Congress
1 1 times.
In an interview, Sen. Patrick J.
Leathy, D-Vt., also said that while he
thinks a colleague on the committee,
Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan,
D-N.Y., was not adequately briefed
about the mining, he has asked
Moynihan to reconsider his decision
to resign as vice chairman of the panel
in protest.
Leahy spoke amid continuing con
troversy over whether the CIA fulfill
ed its legal responsibility to keep the
House and Senate intelligence panels
"fully and currently informed" about
intelligence activities that are under
way or planned.
