1 BP Slip Bath; Sat lini r Clemson edges Virginia From staff and wire reports DURHAM Ray Williams stroked a bases-loaded RBI-single in the top of the ninth inning to give Clemson a 7-6 victory over Virginia Thursday in the loser's bracket of the ACC baseball tournament. Tiger Jim McCollom smacked a three run home run off reliever Yogi Biggs in the top of the ninth to tie the score at 6-6. Brooks Shumake walked and Scott Powers singled to set up the blast. With one out, Williams singled home Chuck Baldwin with the tie-breaking run. With the bases still loaded, Bob Squires struck out and catcher Dan Maynard dropped the pitch. A rundown ensued and Steve Baucom was thrown out at the plate. Tommy Hoare's first home run a fifth-inning grand slam highlighted a five-run explosion and led Virginia to a 6-3 edge. The loss ousted the Cavaliers from the tourney and sent their record to 24-13. Clemson climbed to 34-15 and ad vanced to Friday's 1 p.m. game against either Maryland or North Carolina. Clemson held a 3-1 lead with the help of two unearned runs in the third inning. But the Cavaliers roughed Tiger starter Scott Parrish to take the lead. Dennis Barth walked and reached se cond on Jeff Booker's ont-out single. Kent Savedge singled to load the bases and Dan Maynard followed with a hit to core Barth. Hoare then stroked Parrish's next pitch over the fence in right-center field. Tom Mallon, 5-3, pitched three innings of relief and got the victory. He sur rendered two triples to Kevin Clarke. Biggs dropped to 3-1. baseball Georgia Tech 4, Wake Forest 3 In the day's first game, Scott Jordan's 12th-inning RBI-single sent Walt McCon nell home with the winning run as the Yellow Jackets stopped Wake Forest, to eliminate the Deacons. McConnell singled to start the 12th in ning and moved to second on a sacrifice. Steve Newbern received an intentional walk and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Jordan then stroked a 3-1 pitch to left field. Mike Wilcox's ninth-inning leadoff home run broke a 1-1 tie and Wake Forest went on to a 3-1 lead. It was Wilcox's seventh homer and second of the tournament. Nick Chmil followed with a single, but was picked off when Kyle Caddell struck out. Tommy Gregg walked and Colin Meagher doubled him home. Georgia Tech tied it again when Jamie Sims smacked a leadoff home run off Jeff Mnick. With the bases loaded, Pete Geist's sacrifice fly sent Steve Newbern in with the tying run. The Yellow Jackets had a chance to win, but Scott Jordan was cut down at the plate on Doug Boomer's fly to center. N.C. State-Duke delayed Rain forced the postponement of the nightcap of the second day of the tourna ment and hard-hitting N.C. State was unable to take the field against surprising Duke. The game was scheduled to be played today, after UNC and Maryland conclude their scheduledgame. "The Wolfpack advanced to the second round by defeating Virginia, 10-0, and Duke upset Clemson, 8-5. From page 1 "The rain wasn't falling any harder when they called it than it was when we started," Roberts said. "I felt like we could have played the last two or three innings," Bankhead said. "But it wasn't my decision and I don't want to make any judgments about it." West said that Rountree's decision was correct. "He is a professional person and he made a decision that stands." All Rights Reserved 42064 A CCgolf tourneys open Friday, April 20, 1984The Daily Tar Heel5 By BOB YOUNG and KIMBALL CROSSLEY Staff Writers The last time the ACC men's golf cham pionship was held at Pinehurst's No. 2 course, Wake Forest emerged as the team champion, winning by 33 strokes over Duke. That was 17 years ago, and if there's one sure thing about this year's championship at Pinehurst today through Sunday, it won't be a blowout, as UNC, Clemson and Wake Forest all have a chance at the title. In a way, though, UNC is hoping that history repeats itself, because every year that it has won the Tap Heel Invitational at Fihley Golf Course, it has also been conference champion. But coach Devon Brouse knows that the team must play better than it did when it won the Tar Heel Invitational in a playoff over Clem son, in order to defend its conference ti tle. "We've got to feel positive about our win over Clemson in the Tar Heel," Brouse said. "But we know we have to play better to win the ACC tournament." The five players to represent North Carolina at Pinehurst will probably be John Inman, Davis Love, Kurt Beck, Bryan Sullivan and either Greg Parker or ToddThiele. Sullivan, who was the hero last weekend when he birdied the first sudden death playoff hole to secure a victory for his team, will be returning to the course where he won the prestigious North .South Amateur last spring. Still, UNC will have its hands full with a Clemson team which is looking for revenge and a Wake Forest team which, admittedly, had a bad tournament at Finley, but could turn itself around for , this tournament. The North Carolina women's golf team would like everyone to know that there's more than one ACC tournament going on this weekend in Durham. Historically speaking, the women's tournament is more significant than this weekend's baseball tournament because it is the first-ever ACC women's golf tour nament. UNC coach Dot Gunnells explained that the NCAA previously recognized on ly those tournaments with at least five teams, but because the ACC only has four teams competing in women's golf, the tournament was recognized. Though the Tar Heels will be com peting against N.C. State, which finished second in the Duke Spring Invitational in Durham two weeks ago to the Tar Heels' third, as well as host team Duke and Wake Forest, Gunnells is confident about the team's chances. "We're gonna win," Gunnells said. "We're gonna win," She said the five players who will be competing for UNC Kandi Kessler, Page Marsh, Kristie Kamal, Kelly Beck and Linda Mescan all have been play ing well in recent weeks. Gunnells, who has had four top 20 teams in her eight years at UNC, says this is her most talented group yet. But, as she said, "We have not played as well as I had hoped to. We just haven't had all four girls put it together in a tour nament." UNC has not won a tournament this spring, but has finished in the top 10 in all three thus far. Cathy Johnston, who had the best stroke average on the team in the fall, will not be playing in the tournament because she's not playing well and didn't qualify by competing two weeks ago, Gunnells said. Gunnells said Johnston didn't play two weeks ago because she had given her two weeks off to get over illness and catch up on her studies.
