Younger Nicklaus looking for his own identity By SCOTT CANTERBERRY Surf Writer Being the son of one of professional sports' legendary figures and competing in that same sport tends to create im mediate comparisons and pressure to achieve excellence. Jack Nicklaus II, son of one of golfs all-time greats, has learn ed to negate the comparisons and the pressure as he tries to solidify a starting spot in the UNC golf team lineup. . "It's going to be pretty tough for me to live up to everyone else's expectations before 1 realize my own," he said. Nicklaus, after playing at the top of his game early in the spring, has struggled since the college season began, competing in only four of seven tournaments. Nicklaus, a junior who was a redshirt two years ago, said the pressure to do well is probably still out there, but he has had to block out what other people are ex pecting him to do. Rooting for the Philadelphia 76ers can be risky business, especially with a plethora of Yankees waving around the banner of the Boston Celtics. The Sixers collapse against the New Jersey Nets put that loyalty to the test, but their amazing rebirth this week is cause for celebration Celtics fans are getting nervous. Does anyone really care about the New York Islanders' drive for five? Their fifth straight NHL championship will only tie a record, not break one. Besides, it's time for some new blood in the NHL, such as the Edmonton Oilers. Duke's Johnny Dawkins said Tuesday that the only players who have locked up J) 'He (his father) has done his deal, and I'm trying to do my own deal," he said. "He's helped me very much and been very supportive, but I'm the one out there playing the shots. "I go put and work hard at it, and I know I give it a hundred percent that's what is most important." ... He added that the pressure is a big challenge for him. "But I also have to concentrate on what I'm doing and try to rule out that pressure because it can only make it tougher." Nicklaus, a Campbell Invitational win ner in 1980 and 1982, said that he needs to work on the mental aspects of his game. He said UNC coach Devon Brouse worked with him last fall on a pre-shot routine to concentrate on the one par ticular shot in front of him. Up until the past 1 Vz to two years his father had worked with him on the fun damentals of the game. Now the elder Nicklaus works more on the mental Frank Kennedy NoteS spots on the Olympic basketball team are UNC's Michael Jordan and Georgetown's Patrick Ewing. Add to that list Oklahoma's Wayman Tisdale, Leon "Wood of Cal State-Fullerton and UNC's Sam Perkins. Being out there with him and seeing Kbw he thinks his way through a round has been real helpful to me and applying it to my own game." In addition to being on the Florida state championship golf team his senior year at Benjamin High School, Nicklaus was a two-time all-state selection in foot ball. He said the decision to play golf or football in college had to be made during the summer in the middle of golf season. . and see who is on top. Atlanta Braves fans must be reeling at the loss of 45-year-old Phil Neikro, the an cient knuckleballer who is now 4-0 with the New York Yankees, who are 3-8 when he isn't pitching. Meanwhile, the Braves were 6-10 as of Tuesday night, and not looking very impressive. Isn't it interesting that stock car racing is the top spectator sport in the state and auto racing in general No. 1 in the coun try? I'd like to know where the hell all these racing fans are. Even in my native eastern North Carolina, virtually no one admits to liking racing. They're probably protecting their reputation. He said he was not pressured by his father to play golf. "He never forced me to play golf and that was a real big in fluence. I think if he had pushed me into playing golf, I would not have enjoyed it." Not playing in the ACC tournament last weekend was a big disappointment, he said. "Hopefully I can get my game on the upswing before the NCAAs." He said he plans to compete in a tour nament in Ohio after exams and then come back to play in the North-South Amateur the following weekend. He said that a good tournament at the North-South could prove to himself, his coach, and his team that he can play on the starting five. His performance at the North-South will determine if he will compete in the NCAA tournament. gram this year. And they say racers are just a bunch of silly, good oF boys. No one need blame the North Carolina football team for letting its loyal fans down next fall by failing to win all 1 1 games. Add to that the fact that only 11 starters return from 1983, and expectations had best not get too high. Every year it seems that the spring semester ends at just the right time for this desk. Virtually all UNC sports came to a close this week, save baseball and lacrosse. It's just as well, because I doubt we could take another week of this.
