The water shortage in Orange County last fall resulted in manda tory restrictions on water usage. As the lake level at University Lake dwindled with the lack of rain, Orange Water and Sewer Authority outlawed washing cars and watering lawns. Politics began getting more attention late in 1983. The trial of Lt. Gov. Jimmy Green, who was charged with bribery and conspiracy, brought cameras into a Wake County courtroom, making it the first major trial to be filmed in the state. Green was acquitted on all charges. The race for the U.S. Senate between incumbent Republican Jesse Helms and Democratic Gov. Jim Hunt has brought national attention to North Carolina. Helms is shown here at a December fund-raiser in Greensboro with Vice President George Bush. One political issue that's often discussed is capital punishment. Convicted murderer James Hutchins' execution in March touched off protests and counter-protests both by supporters and opponents of the death penalty. After tornadoes swept across much of eastern and southern North Carolina in March, citizens across the state pitched in to help those left homeless. More than a dozen people lost their lives in the storms. 4, DTHCharles Ledford WrMtlMWI- Crfr U mCtm -.....--nirail.1 mini.ii ...i DTHJamie Moncrief
