Franklin St 942-7544 By PAUL ENSSLIN Tar Heel Staff Writer The chemistry building now under construction near Kenan labs on Raleigh Road should be ready for use in the fall of 1985, according to James Coke, head of the committee overseeing the development. - "It is scheduled for completion next March, but it's really too early to tell when it will be finished and when we'll be able to move in," Coke said. "There is so much to be done before it can be ready for occupancy," he said, referring to inspections and safety standards that have to be met. "But it should be ready by the summer and we should be moved in by the fall." The building will be used to house all the undergraduate chemistry labs, which are currently located in Venable Hall. The construction is totally state-funded, and the estimated cost of the development is $7 million. "The labs in Venable are very old, and a lot of renovations are needed there. It's just not adequate," Coke said. "And with all that needs to be done there, we (the chemistry department) decided it would be easier to just build a new building." Coke said the building would be completely air- conditioned and that each lab will have a TV monitor so that students can study video tapes. "It will be infinitely better than the facilities we have now," he added. "There will be a lot we can't do in Venable that we will be able to do here. This building will be adequate for many years to come." Coke also emphasized that the instructional level will be increased as well. "We will be able to accomodate students more comfortably and will have more efficient use of space," he said. "There will be no experiments we can't do." In addition to the labs, there will be one faculty office and a preparations area in the building. Coke said he did not know what will become of Venable Hall once the chemistry labs are removed. "A lot of stuff I'm sure will stay there because Marine Sciences has some labs there, and there are some other research labs," he said, adding that some of the better labs could probably be renovated. Although no faculty members could be reached for comment, Coke said that all in the chemistry department agreed that the building will be a great improvement. "It will definitely be a pleasure to teach in," he said. "There is just no comparison between it and Venable." m Mm mmm mm Lfm) anrO onlfe croMfe Italian (Eu3tom facing Wholesale Direct Importers Buy direct from Fiorelli of America, and save $112 to $100 by purchasing at wholesale.
