Chambers, Hearn head fall tennis roster
The Daity Tar HeelPriday, September 7, 19847
By MICHAEL SCHOOR
Staff Writer
UNC tennis coach Allen Morris is
quick to mention that potent play from
Wayne Hearn and Jeff Chambers is an
essential for the upcoming fall season.
Yet top-of-the-lineup status doesnH
necessarily mean that the Tar Heel's No.
1 and No. 2 players have similar styles.
Both Hearn, a senior, and Chambers,
a sophomore, received NCAA bids last
season after leading the Tar Heels to
a third-place finish in the ACC tour
nament. Hearn, a big-serve specialist,
captured an ACC individual title,
winning at No. 2 singles.
"Wayne is a serve-and-volley player
and hits the ball flatter than Jeff,"
Morris said. "Wayne attacks."
Not that Chambers is playing the
tennis version of Custer at Little Big
Horn, helplessly watching the overhead
smashes rifle by. Content to wait it out
from the backcourt, Chambers will hit
topspin all day long if necessary. Morris
calls him the exemplary "modern-type"
player, complete with a two-handed
backhand.
"JefFs serve is not a big weapon,"
Morris said.
Hearn is the slugger and Chambers
the gifted singles hitter, and it's anyone's
guess as to which player will hit leadoff.
Morris said the fall schedule should
determine his No. 1 singles candidate.
"Obviously theyll both be in the top
part of our lineup," Morris said, adding
that Hearn experienced trouble at No.

Chambers.
Meanwhile, Morris hopes to replace
Ron Erskine and Josh Sarner, UNC's
departed No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
Junior Eddie Stewart should win one
of those jobs. Stewart hopes to regain
the form of his freshman season, when
he was undefeated in ACC regular
season play and finished second in the
conference at No. 6 singles.
"Eddie had a relatively good year (last
season), but he didn't play quite as well
as he had as a freshman," Morris said.
Sophomore Mark DeMattheis, last
season's starter at No. 6 singles, suffered
a shoulder injury and will be sidelined
for two to three months.
"Mark is a question mark at this
point," Morris said. "We're hoping hell
be ready for the spring season."

Most UNC students tend to associate
intramurals with sporting competition.
Indeed, competitive sports are a major
part of the intramural department's
programs at North Carolina, but the
department does offer numerous other
activities.
For example, "All Most Anything
Goes" is a team event consisting of many
different activities for teams of four men
and four women.
1M-REC sponsors two running
groups. The Hash House Runners
meets once a month to run a mystery
course. The group . selects a raon
member to originate a course for the
group to run. The course is marked with
flour so the runners may find their way.
The Tar Heel Pacemakers, a new group,
will run every Monday and Friday.
Another activity conducted by IM-
REC Sports is the Aerobic Program.
There are seven aerobic classes being
offered this year, according to Rob
Frye, a full-time assistant with the
department.
Another event is the Valentine's Day
Couples Competition. Among the
activities in that event is the sleeping
bag switch, in which couples to race to
their respective sleeping bags, crawl in,
switch clothes, crawl out of the sleeping
bag and head for the finish line.
IM-REC offers the Century Club for
people who want to exercise on an
individual basis. The object is for the
individual to set his own goals based
on a point system best suited to that
person's capabilities. Points are earned
by running (one point per mile),
swimming (four per mile), and bicycling
(one per five miles). Each person will
have until the end of second session
summer school 1985 to meet his goals.
The point totals are kept by the
individual based on the honor system.
