SPORTS efense is struggling D By MIKE SCHOOR Staff Writer Safety Steve Hendrickson said UNC's defense if. tense. Linebacker Micah Moon said he didn't think giving up 85 points in two games was possible. Hendrickson started on the 1932 team that finished second in the nation in total defense. Moon, a standout at inside line backer, led UNC's 17th-ranked defense in 1983. Those were the days.... Moon on 1984's defense: "You feel very low and down but you have to keep going. If you don't, you Ye cheating yourself." Hendrickson: "It's hard to feel great about the team. WeVe made fundamen tal errors (on defense). The first two games have been a learning experience. What Hendrickson has learned is that the secondary is blamed for every pass completion allowed. There have been 47 passes completed by Navy and Boston College, totalling 576 yards. "Pass defense is a team concept, he said. "The secondary takes a lot of heat because they're the most obvious (suspects). There's not that big a lack of experience in the secondary. But other UNC secondaries have had a little more unity (on the field)." UNC's defensive line and linebacking corps are inexperienced. Only defensive tackle Brian Johnston and Moon started before this season. And Moon was switched to outside linebacker. "We have talent...but that cant compensate for (lack of) experience," Moon said. Moon, a senior, said he talked to some of the players about the Tar Heels disappointing start. "I said, Tm going to have a very positive attitude and Id like you to do the same thing, " he said. But positive attitudes alone don't stop opponents drives. Nor does tension. Are the defenders reacting instinctively? i " N 4MMMMI S (P&iitm Ik-. Steve Hendrickson "My job is to contain.. .and I have to slow myself down," he said. "I don't think I played real well Saturday. I noticed that sometimes I wasn't paying attention to my keys." "The young guys worry too much about assignments and not (about) going to the football," Hendrickson said. Conversely, Moon said he was sometimes forgetting his new respon sibilities at the outside position. Moon and Hendrickson agree that UNC needs an effective pass rush. "It's got to improve every game," Moon said. But coach Dick Crum, who called UNC's 52-20 loss to Boston College a painful experience for the defense, inferred that expecting a marked improvement by Saturday may be wishful thinking. "Kansas has a good offense... and there will probably be a lot of scoring," Crum said. "I may have to talk with Dean (Smith) and go into the four corners in the last few minutes if we can stay with them." o o CO LU CO z LU o o o CO LU CO LU O o SOFT CONTACT LENSES a o i o m z CO m CO o O Price includes soft spherical contact lenses, sterilization kit follow-up visit Ask about our Extended Wear Contact Lens Package. It was optimism, patience and perspective. It was, however, a familiar tune. "The thing I want to impress upon you," North Carolina assistant men's soccer coach Geoff Griffin was saying, "is that we are a good team." This on Sept. 6, the day after the Tar Heels dropped a 1-0 game to Atlantic Christian College despite having allowed the Bulldogs only one shot on goal. "The wins will come," he continued. "But when it rains, it pours." Michael DeSisti Yes, the rain. I had become accustomed to getting wet. It poured in 1982, the year head coach Anson Dorrance, given the money to do some serious shopping, cut players who figured significantly into previous teams' plans to make room for new blood, thoroughbred stuff. Must be loaded, I thought; 11-7-4 read the scorecard at the end of the season. And it poured last year, too, when the Tar Heels knocked off No. I Duke in double overtime to finish the season 16-3-2, apparently securing that elusive bid in the NCAA tournament. Apparently, that is, until the selection committee left North Carolina to ponder its No. 16 national ranking and a 16-team, Tar Heel less tournament field. This year North Carolina is 3-4, and that catchy Morton salt slogan no longer jingles in my ears. It shrieks. When it rains, it pours. Quick. Somebody build an ark. The season to date: UNC 4, Philadelphia Textile 3; Winthrop 4, UNC 3; Atlantic Christian 1, UNC 0; UNC 6, South Carolina 1; Clemson 2, UNC 1; West Virginia Wesleyan 4, UNC 0; UNC 7, Radford 1. So Atlantic Christian was a hard-luck loss. OK. But who's Winthrop? And so Clemson's Clemson. Fine. But West Virginia Wesleyan? Four-zip?? I dont want to hear about the to-be-expected letdown the day after the double-overtime win over Textile, about the hard-nosed Brits and stylish Jamaicans playing for Wesleyan. Because I know North Carolina, with Mark Devey and Shawn Ritchie, has the most explosive front line in the eight years Dorrance has been here. Because I can remember Billy Hartman beating four players in 30 yards, Chris Colavita marking All-Conference midfielders out of a game. Because IVe heard bones groan when Frank Gilhooly made a tackle in the backfield, opposing goalkeepers moan when sweeper Kenny West was carrying the ball the length of the field with that grin on his face. Because IVe watched Larry Goldberg on his feet, diving left, on his feet, diving right, back on his feet ... with both the ball and the shutout secure. I know these guys are good. But I'm not on the NCAA tournament selection committee. And even if I was, I wouldn't take a team that was 3-4. The problem, it seems, is breakdowns. Lapses. Sunday strolls in La-La Land. "We can play well for 88 minutes," Griffin says. "But we can play erratically for 2-3 minutes, and that can make the difference in the match." Says Dorrance: "Thinking about an NCAA bid would be tremendous arrogance right now. WeVe got to play good soccer. WeVe got to be competitive. WeVe got to win some games." Like the one this Sunday. North Carolina plays Virginia, 7-2 and No. 7 in the latest Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America poll, at 2 p.m. on Fetzer Field. "At this point in time, if the voting took place (an NCAA bid) is not a realistic goal," Griffin says. "I think we have to prepare for the here and now, the immediate. We have to prepare for Sunday." Either that or ask for Noah. SCOREBOARD Field Hockey The first weekly Dhiaioa I field hockey poll by the NCAA. 18. Boston College 19. Virginia 20. Dallas Mavericks coach Dick Motta said he not going to hold it against All-American center-forward Sam Perkins or other first-year players who fail to report for today" start of rookie camp while they work out contract negotiations with management. But Motta said it might be in their best interest to report soon. "We're holding a rookie camp, and they're rookies," Motta said. "But I'm also not going to hold it against the kids. They are individual contractors. They need to get their business out of the way before they come to me. Then, they're my business." Mavericks general manager Norm Sonju is believed to be offering Perkins, the former North Carolina star, about $400,000 a season. Perkins is said to be looking for a contract in the range of 5650,000 to $700,000. Today FIELD HOCKEY at James Madison, 7 p.m. VOLLEYBALL at Louisiana State Invitational. Baton Rouge, La.
