UNC volleyball team gets ready for big weekend
The Daily Tar HeelThursday, October 25, 19847

There should be enough setting, spiking and digging for
even the mildest of volleyball fans this weekend when North
Carolina plays three games as part of a tournament in
Carmichael Auditorium.
The tournament, hosted by Duke, has a round-robin
format with no official winner. "It's just a way to see how
we do against teams outside our region and prepare us for
the ACC tournament," said UNC head coach Peggy-Bradley
Doppes.
The Tar Heels are currently 7-12 after Tuesday night's
loss at Duke, but hope to be ready for the ACC tournament
Nov. 16-18.
"This will be an excellent test for us," said Bradley-Doppes.
"The teams here are stronger than the ACC teams. We need
to play strong teams. That's the only thing that will prepare
us."
UNC will play Tennessee Friday night at 8, and on
Saturday will play Eastern Kentucky (at 3 p.m.) and Virginia
Tech (at 8 p.m.)
"Tennessee has a very established, very respectable
program," Bradley-Doppes said. "They always play a tough
schedule and always qualify for post-season play. They are
more experienced than us, but if we play a good game, well
give them a good fight.
"Eastern Kentucky is a very quick team," Bradley-Doppes
continued. "We will need to start out very aggressively to
beat them. Virginia Tech is not as competitive as the other
two and I'm glad we wind up with them. Well be a little
fatigued, but if we can stay healthy well be all right."
Linda Kantz, UNC's starting setter and the only senior
on the squad, said that playing two games in one day should
not be too much of a factor for the young Tar Heel team.
"A big schedule doesn't bother us," she said. "Everyday
we condition and practice. We're physically strong, we just
need to stay tough mentally."
Kantz added that the team was pretty excited about the
weekend's activities.
"We're all pretty psyched. This is the mid-point of our
season and everything is starting to come together. This is
where we need to push."
After the tournament, UNC will take two days off before
resuming its ACC schedule Tuesday, when it will host N.C.
State.

The UNC volleyball team will host three teams this weekend in Carmichael Auditorium.

Staff Writer
Starting Friday morning at 9 a.m.,
Finley Golf Course will be the site of
one of the most talent-rich golf tour
naments in the nation as North Carolina
hosts the annual Lady Tar Heel Golf
tournament.
The three-day event has attracted
such teams as defending NCAA cham
pion Miami, defending tournament
champion Kentucky, and such top 20
squads as Florida International, Min
nesota, Georgia and all the ACC
schools. In all, five different NCAA
regions will be represented.
Among the contenders for the indi
vidual title will be defending titlist Amy
Reed, from Kentucky. However, last
year's NCAA individual champion,
Cindi Schreyer from Georgia, should
challenge for the crown as well.
North Carolina coach Dot Gunnells
is pleased with the field for this
tournament.
"We're very excited with the teams
competing this year, especially Miami,"
Gunnells said. "This will be the first year
that they've been to our tournament."
As far as the situation for the host
team, Gunnells is quite optimistic.
"Our team is just playing super this
year," Gunnells said. "If we can put it
all together for this tournament well
do very well."
UNC will have two teams competing
in this year's tournament, designated as
Carolina and Carolina Blue. The first
of these two squads will compete for
the team title, while the members of
Carolina Blue are eligible for individual
honors.
Making up the Carolina team will be
Page Marsh, Sue Hirsch, Candi Kessler,
Elizabeth Macfie and Angela Wells, all
of whom qualified in practice this week.
The Carolina Blue team will consist
of Kristie Kamal, Kelly Beck, Kathleen
Grady and Leigh Hunnicutt.
Play will begin each day at 9 a.m.,
earlier than in past tournaments in order
to accommodate Saturday's ACC cross
country championships. As a further
precaution, both the first and 10th holes
will be used as starting holes.
Regardless, the tournament should
prove to be one of the best in its historv.
