Ill m IIIKUI COMPANY A Subsidiary of Bristol-Myers An Equal Opportunity Employer MFHV the Thanksgiving football game against Bowling Green. Because most students went home before the game, the athletic department sold the student tickets. In addition, in 1982-83, the Rams Club gave $4,000 to the debate team so the University could send an indi vidual events team to the national championship debate tournament in Ogden, Utah. William Balthrop, faculty advisor of the debate team, said the Rams Club was very receptive to the debate team's request for money. "I don't think they want the whole world to come over there asking for money, but they did show they're willing to help out," Balthrop said. "And given the inherent nature of this group toward athletics, I think they're more in tune with academics than any other athletic organization I know of." According to Moyer Smith, associate athletic director, the rest of the Rams Club money was used for athletic purposes. Of the $9 million raised in 1982-83, Smith said, almost $6 million was collected for the SAC project and $1.5 million paid for all the athletic depart ment's full and partial scholarships. Another million paid tor Rams Club tickets to athletic events, and about $500,000 went toward office expenses and Educational Foundation salaries. The foundation invests any additional money or uses it to rectify deficits in the athletic department's operations budget, Smith said. Athletic Director John Swofford said the Rams Club's money plays an indirect role in the athletic department. Because the foundation funds as many full and partial scholarships as the NCAA allows, the University is able to afford an extensive non-revenue sports program and to devote more funds to facility improvements, Swofford said. "If we had to take from our operating budget to pay for the scholarships, we'd end up eliminating sports," Swofford said.
