2NCAA Final FourFriday. November 16. 1984 Massachusetts Connecticut California-Berkeley The University of California-Berkeley, which faces' the formidable task of playing three-time defending national champion UNC Saturday at 3 p.m., is participating in its second consecutive national championship tournament this year. The Bears, 13-3-1 after first and second-round victories over U. Cal-Santa Barbara, 2-0, and Colorado College, 3-1 in penalty kicks, lost all three of their games on a single road trip in September. Cal.-Berkeley lost to George Mason, U.Conn and Cortland State all NCAA tournament teams in a span of four days. The Bears also tied U. Mass. on the trip. Head coach Bill Merrell remembers last year's NCAA quarterfinal loss to UNC and the reasons for the three goal difference. "They are a dynasty," he said. "IVe viewed several options for playing against Carolina. 1 rejected the Maginot Line (a strategy used unsuccessfully by the French in World War II), and then I thought about using the Strategic Hamlet Approach (a Vietnam War tactic). Now I'm considering using the MX missile. "Seriously, I believe that any team is beatable. But they are probably the least beatable team IVe ever seen in any sport." Leading scorers: Tucka Healy nine goals, 0 assists. Robyn Queen eight goals, two assists. Jodi Fechner five goals, two assists. Lesle Gallimore four goals, three assists. Trudi Sharpsteen two goals, seven assists. Goalkeeper: Mary Harvey 16 games, 36 saves, 12 goals against (0.75 avg. per game), nine shutouts. 1 Cindi Durchslag 1 Mary Harvey 3 Trudi Sharpsteen 4 Liz Gazda 5 Kara Lipton 6 Natalie Docktor 8 Andrea Rodebaugh 10 Jesse Brennan 1 1 Jodi Fechner 1 2 Denyse Garcia 13 Molly Cernicek 14 Jenny Thomas 15 Robyn Queen 16 Kelly Campbell 17 Lesle Gallimore IS Christina Misen 19 Tucka Healy 20 Jamie Nourse The U.Mass women's soccer team enters Saturday's game against U.Conn with a 15-3-2 record, including victories over Boston College and Harvard in the first and second rounds of the tournament. To date during the 1984 season, U.Mass has outscored its opponents' by a 59-12 margin, with freshman forward Jolie DePauw tallying a team-leading 14 goals eight of them game-winners. The only two losses for U.Mass this season came at the hands of No. 1 tournament seed. Brown, 1-0, and second-round victim Harvard, 1-0. Also, U.Mass tied Cal. Berkeley and William and Mary. With only two seniors on its roster, U.Mass is a relatively young team that will probably be heard from for a while. "A lot of people dont realize how young we are," said head coach Kalekeni Banda. "We start six freshman. It can be an asset; the young girls tend to get out there and go wild. But they can come out and start panicking, too, and you lose them for 90 minutes." Banda said he doesn't think any conclusions can be drawn from the fact that U.Mass beat Boston College twice this season, while U.Conn split with the Eagles, or that U.Mass knocked off U.Conn, 2-0, in a midseason encounter. "This is playoff time," he said. "It's going to be a hard fought game. I think it's going to go down to one." Leading scorers: DePauw 14 goals, five assists. Catherine Spence seven goals, eight assists. Chris Taggart six goals, four assists. Goalkeepers: Jeanne Paul 15 games, 53 saves, eight goals against (0.53 avg. per game), nine shutouts, 12-2-1 record. Lisa Ellis three games, 12 saves, two goals against (0.67 avg. per game), two shutouts, 2-0-1 record. The Huskies, 16-3-2 after tournament victories over Cortland State and top-seeded Brown, twice have entered national championship tournaments seeded first. But U.Conn has yet to advance to the final game, let alone win the title. "There is no pressure on us this year," said head coach Len Tsantiris. "We're the underdog by far. We had the pressure the past two years as the number one team, but not this year." This year U.Conn was not one of the four teams awarded seeds for the tournament, after regular-season losses to Cortland State, 2-1, U.Mass, 2-0, and Boston College, 2-1. Tsantiris isnt fazed by the U.Mass loss, and like U.Mass head coach Kalekeni Banda said the NCAAs were a whole new ballgame. "It has nothing to do with this game," he said. "Anyone can win." Leading scorers: Cathy Shankweiler 13 goals, seven assists. Kim Sullivan 11 goals, seven assists. Donna MacDougall 10 goals, six assists. Goalkeepers: Laura Skaza eight games, 70 saves, seven goals against (0.75 avg. per game), 3.5 shutouts. Bonnie Mitchell nine games, 43 saves, three goals against (0.44 avg. per game), 5.7 shutouts. Sue O'Hare six games, 21 saves, six goals against (1.09 avg. per game), 1.80 shutouts.
