UNC began its first national championship season in 1 98 1 with the knowledge that in November of that year, it might be playing for all the marbles in Kenan Stadium. To ensure a tournament bid, North Carolina played only to win, and to win big. Seven of the Tar Heels 19 victories that year were by margins of 1 1 goals or more. In 1982, however, North Carolina scored in double figures just three times; in 1983 only once. This season, UNC has not beaten a team by more than nine goals, a margin still too large for Dorrance's liking. "We're one of the pioneers in women's soccer, and the last thing we want to do is humiliate another team," he said. And so the game plan has been changed from simply winning, to winning and improving the level of play. When his team takes a two or three-goal lead, Dorrance imposes restrictions to minimize scoring. and maximize skill: sometimes players are allowed only one or two touches before passing, other times they must play possession ball in the backfield or score only with their heads. "Winning and losing is so clear cut, Dorrance said. Its all or nothing. If you set that as your goal, youYe not going to have anything if you dont hit it. If you don't set that as your primary goal, you still have your moments. ' North Carolina has had plenty of moments. And with the tradition that has been established, coupled with the continuation of those things that helped establish it, the good times may be rolling for a while in Chapel Hill. Dorrance has built, it seems, a dynasty. Said reserve midfielder Nancy Slocum, a native of Palo Alto, Calif., and a sophomore transfer from Duke: "It's kind of a dream you always have when you're a kid. You want to be a professional athlete.
