Tar Heels successful over break
By LEE ROBERTS
Avustant Sports Kditor
While most of us were drinking
eggnog and hanging out under the
mistletoe over the holidays, the North
Carolina basketball team was trotting
around the globe.
This world-wide excursion led the
Tar Heels from Osaka, Japan to Miami,
Florida, and from a record of 5-0 at
exam time to 10-1 going into tonight's
matchup with Maryland in Carmichael
Auditorium (7 p.m.).
Along the way. North Carolina
climbed up to fifth in the basketball
polls, then dropped back down to ninth
after a loss to Missouri.
Here's how it all happened:
Dec. 21-UNC 80, Wichita State 69
Osakajo Hall, Osaka, Japan
With 15,000 avid Easterners in
attendance, the Tar Heels roll to a 40
26 halftime lead, then lead by 18 points
twice in the second half, only to see the
Shockers twice trim those leads to seven
points. With four minutes left, UNC
goes into the four corners and, with 3:20
left, Wichita State comes as close as it
will, trailing 71-64. Brad Daugherty has
to sit for 1 1 minutes with foul trouble,
scoring only eight points. But Steve
Hale makes up for Daugherty's absence
by scoring 17 points, and Joe Wolf
scores a career-high 16. Buzz Peterson
throws in 14 more. Coach Dean Smith
comments later on Daugherty's
absence: "Without him, we're not the
same team."
Dec. 23-UNC 85, Arizona State 66
Aoyama Gankin Hall, Tokyo, Japan
This victory gives UNC the Suntory
Ball Tournament championship, and
Smith calls it the Tar Heels' best effort
of the season. Daugherty and Warren
Martin block up the middle, forcing the
Sun Devils to shoot outside, and they
can manage but a miserable 31 percent
shooting for the game. The Tar Heels
jump to an 1 1-2 lead, go into halftime
with a 45-3 1 bulge, and lead by 2 1 points
five minutes into the second half. Kenny
Smith and Daugherty are named to the
all tournament team by Japanese sports
writers. Daugherty scores 20 points.
Smith 17 and Martin 14 in the rout.
Dec. 29-UNC 88, Hawaii Pacific 69
Block Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii
UNC leads 50-47 after a hotly
contested, fast-paced first half before
less than 1 ,000 fans on the Pearl Harbor
"naval base. The Tar Heels go on an
18-4 run to start the second half, and
the Sea Warriors cannot make up the
deficit. A pressure defense and the play
of the guards are major factors in the
win, Smith says. Daugherty knocks in
22 points against two seven-footers,
Wolf adds another 16, Smith has 15
and Hale scores 14. UNC is now 8-0
and ranked number five in the country.
"We don't care about the national
rankings now," Smith says. "We're
among the top 50 teams in the country."
Dec. 30-Missouri 81, UNC 76-Block
Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii
The bubble bursts as the Tigers, led
by Dan Bingenheimer, who sinks five
free throws in the final :42, sink the Tar
Heels. Missouri takes a 36-34 lead with
1:15 left in the first half and never gives
it up. In the second half, North Carolina
starts off by making just four of 14
shots, and Missouri pulls away to an
eight-point) lead. But the Tar Heels
battle back and, with :46 remaining,
trim the Tigers' lead to 73-72. Then
Bingenheimer takes over. Daugherty
and Smith score 14, Wolf and Martin
score 13, and Hale adds 10 as the Tar
Heels fall to 8-1.
Jan. 3-UNC 85, Stetson 71-Stetson
College, Orlando, Florida
North Carolina christens the new
year with an 85-71 pounding of the
Hatters, but the victory may cost. Joe
Wolf goes down with a sprained ankle
and will be gone two to three weeks.
The score stands at 22-16, UNC, when
the Tar Heels go on a string of 14 points
to put it away. Stetson is scoreless for
four minutes, and it is 42-26 at the half.
Stetson shoots well and the Tar Heels
poorly in the second half for the 85
71 final. Using traps and a half-court
press, the North Carolina defense has
the Hatters baffled all night. Daugherty
finishes with a career-high 24 points,
and he and Dave Popson each pull in
nine rebounds.
Jan. 5-UNC 78, Florida State 69-Knight
Center, Miami, Florida
The Seminoles build up a 23-14 lead
early, then coach Smith sets up a 2-1-2
zone defense to force Florida State
to take outside shots. It works. UNC
goes into halftime with a 39-33 lead.
The game is a battle in the second half.
Florida State takes its last lead, 51-50,
with 10:18 left to play. With UNC
leading, 63-61, Daugherty and the UNC
fast -break put the game away. Daugh
erty hits a shot, then blocks a dunk
attempt by forward Rodney Allen, then
triggers a fast break that results in a
Steve Hale layup. Seconds later, Smith
feeds Daugherty on another hoop, and
it's off to the races. Taking advantage
of a packed-in FSU zone, Steve Hale
pops for 23 points. The Seminole zone
is designed to stop Daugherty inside,
but he scores 21 anyway. Says coach
Smith later: "Steve (Hale) always plays
great, whether he scores three points or
15 points." Or 23 points, a career high.

In one of the most ambitious campaigns undertaken in
the history of UNC wrestling, the Tar Heels went to the
undeniable Mecca of collegiate wrestling, the Midwest, to
prove themselves worthy of a lOth-place national ranking.
In the end, North Carolina found out why its opponents
had higher rankings.
"It was a long trip," coach Bill Lam said. "And it took
its toll. But I feel it was necessary to wrestle that kind of
competition and I'm glad we did it."
The team began its competition with the Midwest
Championships in Ames, Iowa in December 28-29. With
seven of the top 10 ranked schools competing, UNC kept
its claim to the number 10 rank, finishing seventh. Three
Tar Heel wrestlers finished in the top five of their divisions,
with Chip McArdle placing third at 126, Gene Staulters
finishing fourth at 134, and Rob Koll placing second at 158.
"Rob (Koll) just wrestled great, only losing to the top
ranked wrestler in the country," Lam said. "And Chip
(McArdle) lost to a guy who was ranked second in the nation."
After the invitational, UNC began a series of three dual
matches against the third, fifth and seventh-ranked teams
in the country Iowa State, Northern Iowa, and Wisconsin.
. UNC got off to a quick start against the Cyclones of Iowa
State when Al Palacio pinned Dan Higgins in 3:32 in the
118 division. North Carolina lost the next four matches as
John Thron decisioned McArdle (126), 4-2; Joe Chezzi beat
Staulters (134), 10-8; Joe Gibbons defeated Lenny Bernstein
(142), 13-3; and Lary Jackson scored a superior decision
of 15-3 over David Upshaw (150). Koll broke the drought
at 158 with an 1 1-3 superior decision over Dave Ewing. UNC's
Tad Wilson then tied Mike VanArsdale, 3-3, at 167. But
North Carolina lost the final three matches as Bob Gassman
beat Craig Spivey (177), 10-6; John Heropoulas scored a
superior decision over Tracey Davis (190), 16-4; and Darry!
Peterson decisioned Stacey Davis (Hwt), 7-0. The final score
gave Iowa State the win, 28-12.
Against Northern Iowa, Palacio won again at 118,
defeating Paul Kreimeyer, 10-2. Pat Pickford then beat
McArdle at 126 by a 13-11 score. Staulters (134) then
decisioned Chris Lembeck, 6-1, but the Tar Heels lost the
next six matches. Scott Moringstar defeated Bearnstein (142),
9- 5; Keith Massey turned bach Upshaw (150), 8-5; Lew
Sondgeroth beat Koll (158), 7-5; Dave Grant superior
decisioned Wilson (167), 16-7; Mike Llewellyn beat Spivey
(177), 4-2; and Jeff Weatherman scored a technical fall over
Tracey Davis (190). Stacey Davis won the heavyweight
division over Dave Crees, 77-5, but Northern Iowa won the
match, 25-10.
In the last of its dual matches, Wisconsin beat UNC, 30
6. North Carolina won the first two matches as Palacio (118)
beat Mark Clayton, 6-2, and Chip McArdle defeated Gene
Spellman, 5-3. UNC was held winless in the remaining
matches as Jim Jordan superior decisioned Staulters (134),
20-6; John Giufa defeated Bernstein (142), 10-3; Paul
McShane scored a superior decision over Upshaw (150);
Mark Richman major decisioned Koll (158), 14-6; Rudy Isom
beat Joe Silvestro (167), 7-2; Terry Manning beat Spivey
(177), 6-3; Ralph Liegel turned back Greg Zwilling (190),
10- 8; and Dave Wanta decisioned Stacey Davis (Hwt), 5-
Still, Lam was satisfied with his team's performance.
"We had some good and not so good performances against
some excellent competition," he said. "If we can get all our
guys into the right weight classes well have a very competitive
team."
