arnell, Killian lead
fencing attack in '85
By DAVID McCULLOUGH
. Staff Writer
A fine showing in the preseason has
propelled the UNC women's fencing
team to the status of national contend
ers this season. Two fencers who stand
out as the leaders of this team are senior
co-captains Cindy Killian and Karen
Marnell.
Killian suggests her primary role as
captain is to boost morale and to
motivate her teammates. .
"A lot of times, less experienced
fencers get frustrated and discouraged,"
Killian said. "1 encourage them by
saying I was in your position once and
I know how you feel.' The best thing
to do is show them they always have
different moves to apply."
While encouragement is helpful,
Killian suggests that self-confidence
plays a far more important role. "If you
don't have self-confidence, you're not
going to be an effective fencer," she said.
"I think it's a Catch 22 because if you
have self-confidence you're going to try
a lot of things and be more successful
at a faster rate. Self confidence perpet
uates itself in this manner."
The self-confidence and drive which
Killian developed through fencing also
has been beneficial outside of Fetzer
Gym.
"When you're in college you are going
to learn a lot, but many times you are
not chnllpncreH.'" Killian nid "For most

people, fencing is unknown and new
challenging both physically and emo
tionally. It teaches you to take the
initiative and try something new."
Marnell, the most experienced fencer
on the squad, adds a different dimension
to the leadership scheme. Her primary
role is to introduce techniques and
strategy to her less experienced
teammates.
"I work with giving lessons and the
coaching aspect of fencing because of
my experience," Marnell said.
Teaching teammates can be a cum
bersome task when your students are
of similar age and stature.
"Before practice, you will be talking
about going out and then all of a sudden
you're in an authority position," Mar
nell said. "1 have no patience and I come
across as pushy at times, but once (team
members) get to know me, coaching is
not difficult. Usually I demonstrate an
attack and make them practice it until
they can do it with their eyes closed."
Marnell says her aggressive nature
helps her to concentrate on completmg
the task at hand, both in and away frq'm
fencing competition.
"I really work hard at what I'm doing,
whether it's fencing or something else."
The balance of power between these
two co-captains should help provide
North Carolina with a balanced attack
for the spring season.

throws and let them back in the game.
I feel our kids played well enough to
win but so did North Carolina's."
Driesell said there was some conf u
sion on that final inbounds play, since
he had told Gatlin to call time-out
should he get in trouble. "He just made
a mistake," Driesell said.
' That mistake was one of seven
turnovers charged to Gatlin, who
managed only nine points but dished
out 1 2 assists. "I thought Adkins was
going to come all the way to the ball,"
Gatlin said of the final play. "But I just
threw a bad pass."
Hunter credited Coach Dean Smith
with making the correct defensive call
on that play. "He told us what the play
was going to be, but we thought it was
going to Lenny (Bias). I saw Adkins
open, and I faked to make (Gatlin) think
Adkins was open."
Popson said his i5-footer that put
the Tar Heels ahead with :05 remaining
was not a shot he would normally take.
"1 was just so open, so I took it," he
said, noting that he wasn't sure if it was
good when he released it. "As soon as
it left my hand it was either going in
or going out."
Popson tied Daugherty for UNC high
scorer with 14 points and added five
rebounds. Defensively in the second
half, Popson cooled off Bias, who

Brenda Summers, director of com

with 23 and was not a factor in the f inal
60 seconds, although he added a
meaningless field goal us time ran out.
But Peterson and Ranino Smith said
they were looking for the basket on the
game-winning break but passed the ball
away at the last second. "1 was just going
to go up for a prayer and hope someone
got the rebound, but I looked up and
could see David at the free throw line,"
Peterson said.
The teams were rarely separated by
more than a field goal difference, as
both teams battled through an assort
ment of man defenses. Maryland rarely
dropped into any obvious zones, while
the Tar Heels mixed up the defense
more often.
The Tar Heels led 39-38 at the half,
but only after both teams had run off
long scoring streaks which canceled
each other out. Several times in the
second half the Terrapins tried to pull
away but could do no better than a 55
50 edge with 1 1 minutes to play.
While both teams struggled around
50 percent from the foul line, they were
hot from the floor, with UNC shooting
61.5 percent and Maryland at 58.5.
"I thought we were fortunate to win,"
Coach Smith said. "Maryland was
poised away from home and well
prepared. But, you have to hand it to
our team. We squeezed one out tonight,
and I mean squeezed."

"There will be different approaches
to problems and new people taking
leadership roles in the Senate,"
Summers said. "There will be fewer
committees but more time in committee
for debate. It will be a more open
process."
Summers said she expected general
agreement and cooperation between
Martin and the Senate leadership.
"Education and economic development
will be the thrusts of the legislation, as
both the governor and lieutenant
governor ran their campaigns on those
issues," she said. "We see that the two
will work together at this point on a
lot of issues, but.it will depend on the
governor's tax reforms and future
budget proposals. They should be
debated in the General Assembly."
