6The Daily Tar Heel Monday, February 25. 1985 SPORTS ulruGMiO." IEEE Daugherty exuberant, over Tar Heel season sarcastic toward the preseason predictions By FRANK KENNEDY Staff Writer Maybe everybody doesn't always know what he's talking about all the time. So says Brad Daugherty. North Carolina's junior center, who came away from Saturday's Carmichael finale with 18 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in UNC's 84-50 win over Clemson, was understandably pleased as he lounged on a sofa in the Tar Heel locker room. But he was not so exuberant that he didn't have room for a little sarcasm for the pre-season forecasters who said UNC would finish no higher than third or fourth in the ACC standings, if not lower. UNC's win vaulted the team into a first-place tie in the league along with N.C. State at 8-4, with games against Georgia Tech and Duke remaining on the schedule. "I sure didnt expect to be here," Daugherty said of the Tar Heels' standing. "Everyone gave us the bum rap and I was about to believe it myself. Just goes to show you that not everybody knows what they're talking about. "I was wondering why everybody thought we were going to be so horrible. You just have to rely on yourself. Forget about all this crap everybody else has to say. You have to have confidence in the team, and weVe proven that." After the losses of Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins last year, little hope was bestowed upon this team via the media. Few preseason polls placed the Tar Heels in the top 20, and some experts speculated that this might be the first losing season in Chapel Hill in more than 20 years. Now the Tar Heels are 21-6 and have won seven of their last eight games in what might have been the most challenging three-week stretch of the season. And, interestingly enough, the turnabout came after their most surprising loss this season: at Clemson,. 52-50, on Jan. 30. "We were rock bottom after that game," Warren Martin said. "We had a long talk and decided that one of the things that was bothering us the worst on our game was rebounding. WeVe come out and worked much harder and really had a desire to get rebounds." The turnabout on board play has been dramatic, as UNC was routinely out-rebounded prior to the Clemson game. Over the last five outings against LSU, Maryland, N.C. State, Wake Forest and Clemson the Tar Heels have outmuscled the opposition, 180-126, for a 36-25 game average. The Feb. 30 loss marked the first time in 20 years that UNC had lost three consecutive league games, and it dropped back into the pack despite a 14-5 overall mark. Daugherty said the team realized there was still time to turn it around, "Self-doubt? No, but we knew we had a lot of work to do and we couldn't let our guard down," he said. "A lot of Carolina teams in the past have been able to win on talent alone. We found that we couldn't do that because we don't have as much talent, as we have had before." Saturday's win will most likely be the pinnacle of the turnaround, for it is unlikely that UNC will approach a 34-point victory margin again this season. The Tar Heels face Georgia Tech Wednesday night in The Omni in Atlanta. Earlier this year, Tech, which matches up against UNC's front line as well as any team in the conference, beat UNC, 66-62. Saturday, North Carolina closes its season at Duke, which ran over the Tar Heels 93-77 in January. But with a league tournament in two weeks, and the NCAA tourney to follow, is it really significant that this team win the regular season race? "Every team in this conference wants to win the regular season," Daugherty said. "Whether we do or not isn't going to determine our fate the rest of the season. But it would be nice, especially for a team that's supposed to be picking up the lint off everybody else's socks." So says Brad Daugherty. Sarcasm intended. Men's swlmmiiri third in the AC C By SCOTT CANTERBERRY Assistant Sports Editor . Although finishing a somewhat disappointing third place, the UNC men's swimming and diving team did come away with some pleasing perfor mances from the ACC championships this past weekend in Clemson, S.C. "It's always a disappointment to lose, but we swam the best we could and you can't ask for more than that," said senior co-captain Geoff Cassell, who set a $3250 Transmission Tunc Up. UNC, who won the team champion ship in 1983, fell behind host Clemson and eventual winner N.C. State on Thursday and gradually lost ground to the teams during the next two days, before losing by 80 points. "Everyone swam their career bests," Cassell said. "The numbers are just one aspect of the meet. They didnt reflect on the way we swam." One possible reason for the Tar Heels' third-place finish was the meet's arran gement, said senior co-captain Dirk Marshall, who was redshirted this season and did not compete in the meet. "The meet is heavily weighted to the freestyle events," Marshall said, refer- pared to just two events for each of the other three strokes. "State and Clemson were just stronger freestylers." Despite the loss, Cassell said he still thought UNC was the best team on the deck. Sophomore Tim Shea swam to two individual titles in the 100-yard butterfly (1:47.46) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:00.13) and was the team's only individual winner. Strong perfor mances were also turned in by junior Chris Stevenson, who finished second in both the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard butterfly and third in the 100 fly. Shea and Stevenson's times, which qualified them for the NCAAs, should be good enough to make them All Americans, Marshall added. Freshman Neil Wilson, swimming in the distance freestyle events, was the Tar Heels' biggest surprise in the meet. according to Cassell. "We called him our silent hero," he said of Wilson, who finished ninth in the 1650-yard freestyle. "He didn't get a lot of breaks this season, but his times have kept dropping." Danny Hamilton and Tim Evans, who did not have great seasons last year, came back with excellent times in the three-day competition, Marshall said. Clemson, benefitting from the record-setting performances of Coy Cobb and a vocal home crowd, negated a first day deficit to take a seven-point lead over State after Friday's finals. But the Wolfpack, winning the 800-yard freestyle relay on Saturday, finished strong to win the team championship by five points. The UNC swimming and diving teams will compete on Wednesday in the Tar Heel Invitational. y-PLITT- J THEATRES 1. lT IMIUlrti TiT Ml Mtt 1 DISCOUNTTICKETS ACCEPTED "Cop The Killing Fields . 3:00 5.-00 7:15 9:30 4:30 7.-00 0:45 LATE SHOWS rv ? -Art wnri oo JT f 1 T JFt ICLMTEK llff mm i (getter 9J rtfl ELLIOTT RD. at E.
