Goifeirs shoot for Tm'Meel 1 Invitational crown
By JIM SUROWIECKI
Staff Writer
When this year began. UNC golf
coach Devon Brouse was optimistic
about the team's prospects of perform
ing well on both the national and
conference level. "We've got as good a
chance as anyone of winning the ACC,"
he said. "And 1 think well be at our
best come the second and third weeks
in April.'
Well, it's the second week in April
and Brouse. will get a chance to see if
he was right as the golf team hosts 12
other squads this weekend in the fifth
annual Tar Heel Invitational.
Last year, the Tar Heel was the first
tournament the John Inman-led team
won. That squad really only began to
jell at the end of the year, and after
going without a victory the whole

spring, it won in quick succession the
Tar Heel and the ACC championship
before finishing fourth in the NCAAs.
This year's team is led by All
American Davis Love, and, unlike last
year's squad, is no stranger to winning.
The team has won four of the six
tournaments it has played this spring
and finished second in the other two.
But one of those second-place finishes
was in last week's Furman Intercolle
giate, where UNC was trounced by 21
strokes by conference rival Wake
Forest. That performance has made this
weekend's tournament a crucial test for
the Tar Heels as they head down the
stretch toward next week's ACC
tournament.
"It's important to play well this week
to get our confidence up for the ACC,"
said junior Bryan Sullivan. "We didn't

play very well at Furman, and we've
got to bounce back."
UNC comes into the Tar Heel ranked
fourth in the nation, and their play has
been characterized by consistency
rather than by outstanding individual
efforts. The glue which holds the golfers
together is Brouse V emphasis on the
team as the crucial unit.
"The whole concept is for the team
to play good," Love said. Brouse added:
"I've always believed that team consid
erations can be real positive. Playing
for a team can make the rewards greater
and can make you hang in there when
the going's rough."
Still, both Love and Greg Parker
have won individual championships this
spring and each week someone else
picks up the slack. Indeed, two weeks
ago, in its best performance so far this
year, the team won. the prestigious
Southeastern Intercollegiate, emerging
from a field which included 10 of the
nation's top 20 teams to defeat highly
ranked Oklahoma State by eight
strokes.
But even after the victory, Brouse said
the team could do better. "I'm definitely
not satisfied with the team's play," he
said. "I'm happy that we've been able
to win, but there's tons of room for
improvement."
This weekend, the team will try to

forget about its play at Furman and
make that improvement.
One thing the Tar Heels will be
counting on in the Invitational is the
home-course advantage, which will be
important for two reasons. First, the
team has been on the road for six weeks
in a row and is beginning to show signs
of wear and tear, so playing at home
will be a welcome relief.
"It'll be nice to stay home this
weekend," Sullivan said. "It seems like
we're home for two days and then we're
gone again."
But the biggest advantage of playing
Finley may be the team's knowledge of
the course. "We play it all the time,"
Sullivan said. "You have a feel for the
course. You know what clubs to hit,
what the greens are going to be like,
where to hit the ball to stay out of
trouble. It's got to help you."
Play in the tournament hegihs today
at 8 a.m. and continues through Sunday
on Finley's 6,580-yard layout. The field
is a strong one, and fifth-ranked Florida
in particular looks to be a tough
opponent for UNC, which has taken
three of the four Tar Heel titles.
Other teams include Duke, N.C.
State, Maryland, South Carolina, East
Carolina, Furman, South Florida,
Georgia Southern, Tennessee and
Vanderbilt.

SPORTS
big UNC sports weekesicl
From staff and wire reports
This weekend will be the biggest
weekend of the spring sports schedule,
highlighted by a "Super Saturday."
On Saturday, there will be four big
events on the UNC campus: a golf
tournament, a baseball game, a lacrosse
game and the annual Blue-White spring
football game.
The Tar Heel football team will close
its off-season practice with its annual
intrasquad game at I p.m. Saturday in
Kenan Stadium. North Carolina coach
Dick Crum said he was pleased with
the progress the team had made during
spring drills. UNC was a disappointing
5-5-1 last season, but lost only once in
its last six games, and Crum said he
felt that momentum has carried over
to this year.
"I've been happy with the way our
defense has played," he said. "However,
your defense should be ahead of your
offense in the spring so it's really hard
to say just how far we've come. Still,
I like the attitude our kids have
displayed and the way some of our
younger people have improved."
That need for improvement will be
strong come next fall, when the Tar
Heels play one of their tougher sche
dules in recent years. Home games with
traditional Southern powers Louisiana
State and Florida State, as well as
match-ups against powerful Clemson

Virginia Military will also visit Kenan.
Offensively, Crum had three major
concerns going into the spring drills
developing a backup quarterback,
finding two offensive tackles and
coming up with a replacement for
tailback Ethan Horton.
Mike Bowman and Wes Sweetser are
in a battle for the role of backup
quarterback behind returning starter
Kevin Anthony. Harris Barton and
former defensive end Daryl Parham will
probably be at tackles. William Humes
is one of the leading candidates for the
tailback spot, with Brad Sullivan right
behind him.
Saturday's game will be the second
game-condition scrimmage for the Tar
Heels.
The UNC lacrosse team will be in
action Saturday as well. The Tar Heels
(5-2) host Maryland-Baltimore County
at 2 p.m. on Fetzer Field. North
Carolina is ranked third in the nation
after its stunning 11-10 upset of top
ranked Johns Hopkins last weekend
and its Il-9 win at Duke Wednesday
night.
The North Carolina baseball team
hosts its last three games of the year,
including arch-rival Clemson Saturday
at 3 p.m. The Tar Heels are 32-13-1
after defeating UNC-Charlotte, 1 1 -2,
Thursday night. The ACC games
Saturday and Sunday against Clemson
and Georgia Tech will be important in
deciding UNC's seeding in next Wed
nesday's conference tournament in
Atlanta. North Carolina hosts UNC
Wilmington at 7 p.m. today.
The fourth-ranked men's golf team
will be hosting the second day of the
Tar Heel Invitational Tournament at
Finley Golf Course on Saturday. This
is the fifth year of the event, which will
feature other strong teams such as fifth
ranked Florida and South Carolina.
The tournament begins today and goes
through Sunday. The Tar Heel golfers
have won four tournaments this year,
including the prestigious Southern
Intercollegiate, and had two second
place finishes in their six entered
tournaments.
