But for many Tar Heel athletes the school year did not end with that last exam. For them, the year only ended when the final gun sounded, when the last putt curled into the hole, when that last fastball smacked into the catcher's mitt. Lacrosse: For the lacrosse team, the: sports year ended not in glory but in bitter defeat. The Tar Heels had opened the year with a heartbreaking 14-13 loss in overtime to Syracuse but had come back to win nine of their next 10 games. They entered the NCAA tournament ranked third in the nation, and led by first team All-Americas Mac Ford and Joey Seivold were thought to have a legitimate chance at becoming national champions. But UNC's season came to a sudden halt in the second round when it was defeated again .by Syracuse, a defeat made even; more, painful by the score: 14-13 in overtime. Ford, Joey and Gary Seivold, Steve Martel, Boyd Harden, Chris Walker and Tim Mealey were all named to the All-ACC team, while Ford was ACC Player of the Year. In addition to Ford and Seivold's All-America honors, Harden and Mealey were tabbed as third team All-Americas while Pat Welsh, Gary Seivold, Martel and Walker were given honorable mention . honors. Baseball: As for the boys of summer, the UNC baseball team finished its season by defeating Florida State 9-8 in a nationally televised game. Surhoff three-game set against the Seminoles and UNC's resultant 40-17-1 record was not good enough to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The man for UNC all year long was catcher B J. Surhoff who hit .388, had an on-base-percentage of .475 and slugged .661 while striking out only five times. Surhoff was named a first team All-America by the coaches, The Sporting News, Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball and was named College Player of the Year by The Sporting News. In June Surhoff received perhaps the' highest honor of all when he was picked No. 1 in the amateur draft by the Milwaukee Brew ers. Golf: The men and women's golf teams had disappointing endings to what had been promising seasons. The women had finished second in their last two tournaments heading into the Southeastern Intercollegiate after a very slow start, but were only able to take 10th place. The men entered the NCAA Tour nament at Greenlefe West G.C. ranked in the top ten in the nation after winning five of the eight tournaments they had entered and finishing second twice. Despite their third place showing at the ACC Tournament, they went into the NCAAs with a solid shot at knocking off Houston and becoming national champions. But UNC got off to a very slow start and missed the two-day cut by one stroke, finishing 16th out of 30 teams. The sixth-place finish of junior Davis Love with a total of 290 did little to assuage the team's disappointment. Love and sophomore Greg Parker were named to the first and third Teams All-America, respectively, and both were also put on the All-ACC Team. Tennis: Both Tar Heel tennis squads were shut out of postseason NCAA team competition by the limited fields. There were individual successes for both teams, though, as Elizabeth Alexander took the ACC championship in No. 2 singles and Liz Wachter and Sara Turner won the ACC title in No. 3 doubles. For the men, Wayne Hearn, Jeff Chambers, and Eddie Stewart were all named to the All-ACC team while Hearn was named ACC Player of the Year with Chambers becoming an Ail American by virtue of his top 16 performance in the NCAAs. Both Chambers and Hearn qualified for the NCAAs in singles and doubles. Track: Neither the men's nor wom en's track teams engaged in competition over the summer, but Holly Murray did qualify for the NCAA's in the 3000- and 5000-meter runs, while from the men's side Curt Shaeffer qualified in the javelin as did Kevin McGorty in the decathlon.
