FAIR Staff Writer t "Krissy Ibach is the most giving, sensitive, intelligent, hard-working, easy-going and dynamic person that I have ever had. " head volleyball coach Peggy Brad'ey-Doppes Krissy Ibach is a senior psychology major from Jacksonville, Fla., who is an ACC honor roll and dean's list student-athlete for the volleyball team. She is also a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and is the ultimate North Carolina student-athlete. Ibach is the type of person that would do anything for the program. She comes by coach Doppes' office every day at 3 p.m. and asks if there is anything she can do. She knows how to budget her time very well among the sorority, school and the team, Doppes said. "She and her teammates before every game thank God for giving them the ability to be able to play volleyball and allowing them a chance to give some thing back to the school," Doppes said. They know that playing for UNC is a privilege and they thank God for giving them the chance because they know that it could be taken away from them at any time. "Krissy learned how to give, and the more that she gives the more she gets back. I wish- that I had a team of Krissys," she said. "Krissy has a wonderful sense of humor. They never drive the speed limit, and crawl up your bumper if you don't let them pass. My sports car could easily outrun any 18-wheeled hunk of metal, but if they want to play games I'm ready. I thought the laws are for everyone, but cops seem to let the truckers get away with anything. It stinks. Left Lane Larry Dear Left: Continue to play your silly road games and you're going to end up in a pine box. Truckers are the kings of the road. Respect their status and let the police take care of business their way. Dear Steven: I'm putting together my Christmas list and need some help. What would be a suitable gift for my research assistant? He's a ike Mg'sM staying up all night studying and theV next day she will go to her classes, and I will ask her how she is doing, and she will say, 'just fine, coach'. She is a wonderful person," Doppes said. Ibach in turn thinks her teammates are wonderful. "The team is great," she said. "They are like my second family and I learn a lot from them." In Ibach's freshman year her team mates took bets to see if she would be at UNC her second semester because she was so homesick. But she stayed, and the volleyball program has benefitted. The team and her sorority have helped her feel right at home here. They have become her family away from home. Ibach, who has been hampered with a shoulder injury, has not been able to do certain exercises for fear that she might re-injure it. She has been going to a therapist for treatment. She also stayed in Chapel Hill all summer and worked out so that she could perform better this season. Worrying about the injury is some thing Ibach tries to avoid. "When her shoulder is hurting she doesn't let it show," said Julie Hoffman, senior pre-med volleyball member and team co-captain with Ibach. "She forgets about her own pain and helps others." Ibach also is a good link between the coach and the players. She knows what things to bother the coach with and right of way straight up super kid and is always there when I need him. I know he loves to play golf at Myrtle Beach, but I'm sure he has tons of equipment, so balls and tees are out of the question. I want to spend about $50. Any hints? Dr. S., Raleigh Dear Dr. S.: A gift certificate for a round or two of golf will be much appreciated. The better courses will be happy to accomodate you. Check with a local travel agent or golf course pro. If you can't get any help, a quick call to the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce should do the trick. Copyright 1985 by Steven J. Austin. "Her only weakness I guess is that she is too nice to the other team. I have to remind her to be more aggressive and not to give up too easily. "I never had a sister and Krissy is my sister. Ibach buys her teammates things when they least expect it, like a card or a piece of candy for no reason at all, and she always has time to talk to people, especially when they get homesick. "Krissy is the hardest person on herself. She is constantly saying, 'I could have done better. I did it before,' " Doppes said. "I trust Krissy and her ability to motivate the girls," the coach added. "I give credit to Krissy for making the practices and games so intense." Krissy will come into Doppes' office the day after a game and ask if she can get a couple of the girls together to play some more. "She is a dedicated, committed, hard working athlete, student and sorority member and all of that dedication is going to pay off," Doppes said. "I believe that Krissy is at peace with herself in what she is doing, but I believe that she always wants to do more," Doppes said. ; "She has played past my expecta tions, but not her own. She set her goals and has made them into reality. She wants everything and she wants to participate in everything, and I know she will." 24. UNC-Charlotte 25. Vanderbilt 26. God, was that ever fun. To my friends and I growing up through our adolescent years in the 70s, one of the most important things in life was getting autographs of sports stars. In fact, The Hunt after the game often transcended the game itself in terms of energy and excitement. And let me tell you, we were good. At its peak, my autograph collection topped 200, almost all of them sports stars. Most of them have been lost to a couple of moves and to the sands of time. What we'd do would be to wait out side the visiting team's gate after the game. When some scrub like Marty Pattin (a former pitcher on about 1 1 American League teams) or Vic Albury (one of the most mediocre pitchers in A.L. history) would walk out, you'd run up to them, stuff the paper in their face, and ask for their autograph. You had to be quick, to beat the crowd. . Sometimes a guy like Dick Pole would walk out the gate totally unno ticed and we'd follow him 'cause we felt sorry for him, and get his autograph. But to get a real star took a little more initiative. I remember Luis Tiant, the best pitcher the Boston Red Sox had in the 70s, would drive out of the Red Sox' parking lot with a big fat cigar in his mouth, go about two blocks down the street, and stop. When I saw his truck stop, I sprinted down the street and asked him to sign for me. He handed me his 'Luis Tiant' and I told him what a great pitcher he was, and he said in that high-pitched- Cuban accent of -his-, "i know." y: Once a lady jumped out of the bleachers at Fenway Park, ran to cen ter field and asked Fred Lynn for his autograph. He signed it to a rousing applause, and she got arrested and fined $50. 1 got Fred's autograph at a little cheaper price. Me and my friend Jimmy saw him about two hours after a game, stuck in a traffic jam. So we went up to his car and he signed for us. 1T7 ELLIOT ROAD at E. FRANKLIN 967-4737 $250 TIL 6:00 PM EVERYDAY! The Tar Heels, who reached the final eight in last year's NCAA tournament before losing to eventual national champion Villan ova, have been, ranked 3 by The Sporting News and Street and Smith 's going into this season. The first game of the season is set for November 24 against UCLA, but nobody is sure yet where to go to see it. An announcement is expected at the end of this week regarding a home for the Heels. , v press bojc club Sometimes the athletes would make you do stuff for them if you wanted an autograph. I remember when Darrell Porter, presently the St. Louis Cardi nals' catcher, was on the Milwaukee Brewers. We caught him outside the gate and asked him to sign, and he said, "My hands are full." So I held his jacket and my brother Scott held his beer. "And don't run off with my beer," he growled at Scott. As it turned out Porter had some bouts with alcoholism over the following couple of years, so maybe Scott should have taken off with it. After Game 1 of the 1981 NBA World Championships, I walked right into the Boston Celtics' locker room , and got Tiny Archibald's autograph before some ugly guy grabbed me by the shoulder and told me to get the hell out. There were plenty of others, but the most memorable one I ever got was of Henry Aaron, Hammerin' Hank, the all-time major league home run leader. It was Opening Day of 1975, Aaron's first season with the Milwaukee Brew ers, and every kid in the stadium wanted Aaron's signature. After the game there was a mob out side the visiting team's gate, all waiting for Aaron to come out, but he never did. So me and my friend Davy asked . this guy who was hanging out with Charlie Moore and Robin Yount if he knew where Aaron was. The guy said, "Now I'm not supposed to tell anyone, so dont spread the news, but he's com ing out at Gate B." Well, youVe never seen two punks sprint down to Gate B so fast in your life. We sprinted through the gate (des pite the attendant's advice to the con trary), ran up to Hank right as he was boarding the bus, and stuffed our pap ers'in his face. uiuii i oay any iiiiug, lu us, ouu viivii boarded the bus. He seemed so harried and tired, like he just didn't want to mess with us at all. And looking back on it, I don't blame him. As we left, I looked back and saw his face peering out from the tinted windows of the bus, and it seemed so shrouded in sadness that I felt like apologizing to him for being such a jerk. But I didnx. So here I sit, years later, and IVe lost his autograph. What was it all for? Please forgive us Hank, we just didn't know any better. -PLITT-v i THEATRES ' I UIT IWMM ITIMir mi mi 1 JAGGED EDGE 3:00 5:00 7:00 9:15 BACK TO THE FUTURE 7:00 9:30 Carolina Classic SOUND OF MUSIC 3:00 Daily x.
