Two engineering majors are jawing
and catching some rays in "the
brickyard".
Q: How many Carolina guys does it
take to change a tire?
A: Two. One to buy the beer and one
to call daddy!
Same day, two philosophy majors are
engaging in an intellectual conversation
and taking some sun in "the pit ".
Q: How many State, guys does it take
to change a tire?
A: Only one, but he gets four hours
credit for it!
It is the stuff great rivalries are made
of. Jokes passed down from father to
son, painted faces, pranks and almost
always good football games. So, it may
.not be Michigan-Ohio State or
Oklahoma-Texas and it s outcome may
not scramble the rankings in next week's
AP football poll, but UNO vs. N.C.
State still turns many a North Carolina
head as the battle for the bragging rights
along Highway 54.
"I don't think it (the rivalry) has
dissipated, I do think the hate factor
has come out of it," UNC coach Dick
Crum said. "When I first came to
Carolina, there was a lot of hatred
involved, but fortunately that's all gone
now."

Moo U. and Preppy Hill will kick
it off for the 75th time this Saturday
at Carter-Finley Stadium (12:10 p.m.
WRAL-TV Ch.5), in a series that dates
back to the Teddy Roosevelt regime,
The two team's seasons are appar
ently spiraling in opposite directions.
N.C. State has lost three straight and
has a record of 1-5 on the season, 1
2 in the ACC. The Tar Heels are coming
off an impressive 34-14 win over Wake
Forest, which jumped their season
record to 3-2 and leveled their confer
ence mark at 1-1 . UNC has beaten State
in their last six meetings, including a
come-from-behind 28-21 victory last
year in Chapel Hill on a William Humes
touchdown with :31 remaining in the
game.
N.C. State is led by junior college
transfer quarterback Erik Kramer who .
has completed 109 of 206 passes for
1357 yards and eight touchdowns this
season. Five of those scoring strikes
ended up in the arms of senior Phil
Brothers, who leads the team with 22
catches and is closing in on several
Wolfpack receiving records.
Vince Evans and Rickey Isom line
up behind Kramer; Evans leads the
Pack with 461 yards rushing, but the
Wolfpack ground attack has disap-
peared recently, accounting for only 43
yards oyer the past two games.
On defense, State inside linebacker
Kelvin Crooms, who was a reserve
fullback until last year, leads the team
with 84 tackles. But Crooms can only
plug one hole in the State's swiss cheese
defense. The Wolfpack is last in the
ACC in total defense, rushing defense
and scoring defense having allowed over
29 points per game.

football picks ot the week
Why are we coming at you a day early
this week? Some have suggested we were
so darned proud of our picks we
couldn't wait another day. Others say
we're just so dazed by Jack Clark's
home run . yesterday we didn't know
what day it was. Facts are that we aren't
publishing Friday because we knew
you'd all blow town early for Fall Break
anyway. - ,
"Low Key" Lee Roberts, after some
rough early going, is starting to show
people why he's sports editor (you sure
can't tell by his writing style). Last week

Soccer teams to play
For those of us sticking around the
Chapel Hill area over the long Fall
Break weekend, Sunday afternoon
should provide a double dose of good
soccer.
At 12 the women's team plays
Cincinnati on Fetzer Field as they try
to start a new unbeaten streak after
recently being shut out for the first time
in the program's history. The men's
team will battle Maryland immediately
following that game' at. 2 in an ACC
conference clash. As an added incentive
to attend the games, the Carolina
Athletic Association is offering door
prizes for some lucky fans.
The volleyball team will also be in
action over the break, going to Rich
mond, Ky. to compete in the Eastern
Kentucky Invitational.

Lee compiled a picks of the week record
mark of 9-1, and most people in the
know say Lee's picks are the picks to
pick. Or something like that.
Scott "Scoots" Fowler is precariously
holding on to his season lead by one
game over Roberts and insiders say he's
bought plane tickets to Toledo in case
he screws up this week.
Tim "The Mother" Crothers, after a
fast rookie start, is beginning to make
the kinds of mistakes youngsters will
inevitably make over the pressure of a
long season. It was good while it lasted.
