Royster tore a ligament and will be out two to six weeks. The 6-0 junior was averaging 16.3 points a game and 10.6 rebounds. Royster missed both the 87 70 loss to Georgia and the 82-71 Until Royster gets back, the scoring burden will rest with senior guard Pam Leake, the ACC's third leading scorer at 20.6 points a game. Leake has been .the leading scorer in every game since Royster went down, including 30 points in an 87-80 victory over Missouri and 26 points in the Georgia loss. The Tar Heels opened ACC play this past Saturday with a 89-76 victory over Maryland. Sophomore Kathy Wilson chipped in 17 points and pulled down 16 rebounds. The shot, which lifted the streaking Blue Devils' record to 11 2 and dropped the Tar Heels to 8-4, culminated a see-saw game which featured over 20 lead changes and numerous outstanding individual performances. "I realized when I got the ball, it was my turn to shoot," the 5-5 junior said. "We were looking to go inside to our post and I was real surprised to even get the ball." Duke coach Debbie Leonard was understandably pleased with her team's effort. "Anytime you win, it's special," Wiresttfleirs badgered by Woscoosomip oott AU By BOB YOUNG Staff Writer You can look at Tuesday's wrestling match between North Carolina and Wisconsin at Carmichael Auditorium in three ways: A) Thef UNC wrestling team has a tough time against teams ranked in the top 10. B) The UNC wrestling team has a tough time against teams from the Northwest. C) The UNC wrestling team has a tough time against teams that wear red. And unfortunately for the Tar Heels, Wisconsin was all three, as the sixth ranked Badgers rolled to a 25-1 1 victory over the 13th-ranked Tar Heels. After wards, UNC faced Appalachian State and did some rolling of its own, 42 4. The match started, as always, with a win for UNC at 1 18. Wisconsin didn't enter a wrestler against Al Palacio, who is ranked third in the country. The forfeit lifted his record to 15-2. In the second match, UNC's John Aumiller and Wisconsin's Gene Spel lman fought through a scoreless first period and ended the second period knotted at 2-2. But Spellman scored two takedowns in the last period and came away with a 6-4 win. At 134, North Carolina frosh Enzo Catullo took a 2-0 first-period lead over senior Mark Clayton, but lost it in the second period when Clayton scored a pair of takedowns. The match ended in Wisconsin's favor, 7-6, to tie the team score at 6-6. The next match saw last year's NCAA champ at 134, Wisconsin's Jim Jordan, take on UNC's Lenny Bernstein at 142. The first period was close, as nyordahgrabbed"a 2-0 lead. But the senior was too mucn ior Bernstein m the last two periods as he won 12-2. At 150, the Badgers' John Wirns berger scored four takedowns in the match, and the Tar Heels' Jon Cardi recorded four escapes to give Wisconsin the 8-4 win and a 13-6 lead in the team race. Rob Koll, UNC's sixth-rated wrestler at 158, had a tough second period as his 2-1 lead turned into a 8-4 deficit against Mark Richman. Richaman held on to win the match, 8-5. At 167, Terry Manning of Wisconsin scored three takedowns and an escape to Tad Wilson's four escapes to take a 7-4 decision. That made the team score 19-6, Wisconsin. Sonzogni, who scored just four points on the night, got her opportunity following a frenzied exchange under the UNC basket. North Carolina's Marlene List missed the back end of a one-and-one situation with :13 left and the Tar Heels up 78-77. The two-on-one Blue Devil fast break that resulted from a mad scramble for the ball was appar ently muffed when Duke's Chris More land overthrew an open teammate with :04 left. Instead, the referee ruled that UNC's 5-4 Darlene Cannon had tipped the pass and awarded Duke the ball and a second chance. "Darlene says she didn't hit (the ball)," North Carolina's ninth-year mentor Jennifer Alley said. At 190, North Carolina's Gregg Zwilling scored three points in the final period to pull even with Kyle Richards, 5-5. But Richards' riding time advan tage gave him the victory, 6-5. The Tar Heels finished on a positive note, however, as heavyweight Stacey Davis scored all the points in the first two periods and finished with a con vincing 16-2 victory over Todd Sealer. After the match, coach Bill Lam said his troops weren't prepared for the Badgers. The people of Northern Telecom are reshaping communications. Dissolving the barriers among voice, data and image. "We never dreamed that a point guard who hadn't shot all night would take the shot, no less hit it," an amazed Alley said. Overall, the game was a veritable showcase of momentum swings, pitting two evenly-matched teams that stood toe-to-toe for forty minutes and emerged with respect for one other. Duke, which led by as many as nine early on, took a 42-40 lead to the locker room at the half. In the emotional second stanza, no more than four points separated the two teams at any time. The Dawn Royster-less Tar Heels were led by sophomore center Kathy Wil son's 26-point, 11-rebound perfor mance. Senior guard Pam Leake added 23 points and eight steals. Both Wilson and Leake fouled out in the late stages of the game. No other UNC player reached double figures in the scoring column. "We haven't competed since Dec. 27 and (Wisconsin) came in here having wrestled more recently," Lam said. "Still, they wrestled with much more intensity than us and we were wrestling defensively. Also, they're just a very good team." Against Appalachian State, North Carolina won all but two of its indi vidual matches. The losses came at 118 where both teams forfeited and at 142 where Catullo lost to Southern Conference champion Thomas Hut chinson, 17-7. A Heel Wednesday, January 8, 19867 The determined Duke squad was paced by gutty sophomore Chris Moreland, who ignored a handful of nagging injuries (including a sprained ankle) to score 24 points and pull down 16 boards. Moreland scored on the front end of a one-and-one with 14 seconds left to tie the game at 77 and set the stage for the frantic finish. She was joined in double figures by Connie Goins (16 points), Paula Andersen (14) and Katie Meier (1 1). Alley summed it all up this way: "We figured that with Royster out, and no shot blockers in the lineup, they'd pound us inside. It was a very physical game and that was to Duke's advantage."
