This week's star comes from the
whirling, twirling world of gymnastics.
The UNC gymnastics team has been
making great strides in almost every
meet for the last couple of years, setting
team and individual records so often
that sometimes their accomplishments
are overlooked.
Not this time. Sophomore Stacy
Kaplan, who won the all-around crown
in this weekend's meet against Mary
land and Georgia College, becomes the
first gymnast ever to win this prestigious
award. Kaplan also set a school record
in the floor exercise with a 9.7 mark.
Honorable mention should go to
Kaplan's teammate Kristin Bilotta, who
set a school record in the uneven parallel
bars with a 9.7.

The walking wounded of the UNC
women's basketball team travel to
Charlottesville, Va., tonight to take on
the 'third-ranked Virginia Cavaliers in
a rematch of the ACC's two top teams.
The Cavaliers,; 20-0 overall and 8-0
in the ACC, handed the Tar Heels their
second conference loss of the season
Jan. 25 in Chapel Hill, 84-79. At
tonight's game, "the University of
Virginia will be trying to set a new ACC
women's basketball attendance record
of 7000. The game will feature the
talents of two of the top guards in the
nation in UNC senior Pam Leake and
the Cav's Donna Holt.
UNC will need one of its top per-

formances of the year if they are to have
a chance. Despite the close score of the
first game, the Cav's were in control
most of the game. "I think that we
cannot afford unforced turnovers," said
UNC head coach Jennifer Alley. "I
think that was our downfall last time.
We have got to contain them on the
boards. We have got to have other
people looking to score."
University of Virginia head coach
Debby Ryan is looking for an improved
performance out of her team. "We
didn't play either end of the floor well
(in the first game)," said Ryan. "The
players were not happy with their
performance either."
The 15th-ranked Tar Heels, 16-5
overall and 6-2 in the ACC, have been
fighting an injury bug all season and
have played most of 1986 minus three
starters; center Dawn Royster, forward
Kathy Wilson and guard Darlene
Cannon. That's enough of a loss to
devastate most teams, but despite the
problems, the Tar Heels have main
tained their national ranking and sole
position of second place in the ACC,
both of which will be on the line tonight.
Wilson and Cannon have returned to
practice, but Alley doesn't know if either .
will be able to play tonight. However,
just when you thought things couldn't
get worse, they do. Guard Marlene List
is hampered by a bad back. Forward
Tia Poindexter injured an elbow in
practice on Tuesday, Forwards Chryss
Watts and Marsha Matthews both have
the flu. .
"I don't have any answers," Alley
said. "In my whole life of coaching, I
never had a year like this. We keep
thinking everyday that things are going
to get better. Before that happens, we
end up with three or four more acci
dents. At the shape we're in, we cant
afford to keep practicing. It's really
frustrating."
Regardless of the handicaps, the Tar
Heels will have to stop Virginia's guard
tandem of Daphne Hawkins (17.6 ppg)
and Donna Holt (15.8). In the first
game, Holt had 20 points and Hawkins
1 6. The Tar Heels as always will counter
with Pam Leake, who led all scorers
in the first game with 29 points despite
fouling out with 3:47 left. Leake is
averaging 23.3 points a game and has
not scored below 20 points in eight
straight games.
