Reynolds Foundation creates annual N.C. leadership award Oy GORDON RANKIN Staff Writer RALEIGH The Z. Smith Rey nolds Foundation Inc. of Winston Salem announced Monday its establish ment of a new stafewide leadership award. The statement was issued in a noon press conference at the Velvet Cloak Inn in Raleigh by Smith Bagley, president of the Foundation. Bagley is the grandson of the founder of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and the son of the late Nancy Susan Reynolds, for whom the award is named. The Nancy Susan Reynolds Awards will annually recognize three individuals who have performed as outstanding leaders at even the most obscure social levels. Each recipient will be given a $25,000 grant, $5,000 of which he may use as he wishes and $20,000 of w hich will go to charitable organizations he deems appropriate. Only N.C. citizens may receive the grants. In remarks concerning the philo sophy behind the formation of the award program, Bagley said: "The greatness of North Carolina is founded not on a few prominent leaders who have come forth from time to time, but on the common man, whose contribu Tin Drum actors perform rape skit for Rape Awareness Week By KERSTIN COYLE City Editor One out of every three American women will be raped during her lifetime, according to a presentation of the Tin Drum Theatre Company in the Pit yesterday as part of Rape Awareness Week. The presentation, narrated and w ritten by James Davis and Jennifer McCray of the Tin Drum Theatre, tackled different attitudes regarding sexuality in the United States. "Rape is not the natural outcome of men and women being together," said Davis, a junior from Burnsville. "There are many countries in which rape is virtually unheard of. The reason that rape is so common in the U.S. is our culture promotes the sexual objectification of women." For example, the group illustrated how perfume advertisements, porno graphy and societal pressure to dress sexy are incorporated into everyday attitudes regarding the role of American men and women. "We are not going to try and make men feel guilty about being sexual," said McCray, a sophomore from Atlantic Beach, Fla. "All men have sex drives, but not all meaare r u n i w t i Rape is very common in Chapel Hill, Davis said, and many rapes can be prevented. The company's pres entation was designed to let people know how and when to say, "No." The most violent and least com mon type of rape is called violent aggressive, Davis said. The awards will be presented annu ally in each of the three following categories: Advocacy For positive invol vement on behalf of people, issues or concerns that otherwise may be without effective voices. This happens after two people have just met in a social situation such as a bar or party. "This kind of rapist tends to classify women in two distinct categories - good girls and bad girls," McRay said, "that is, those who do and those who dont. Davis stressed that 80 percent of all rape victims had been consuming alcohol or other drugs. The third and most common type of rape is date-rape, Davis said. Ninety percent of all rapes are date rapes, most of which can be pre vented, he said. "The crux of the matter is this: In this rape situation, as in the previous ones, the woman must communicate what she wants before she loses control of what's going on," he said. Davis also said date-rape situa tions were much more complex than the ones illustrated in the Pit, but there was always a point at which a woman could prevent a rape by asserting what she wanted. , Listed . are five rape preventive , :measures, ,. as outlined by the . Up" is the kind of film that pops up every few years to defy the conventions of the average social documentary, which is based on that potentially boring procedure, the interview. This film plays like a feature film, and the real lives of its subjects are as enthralling and dramatic as any that can be created in the cinema. Apted's method for the film was simple. He took 14 kids, interviewed them at the age of 7 on such varying subjects as their education, their ideas about their futures and even their philosophies on the opposite sex. Then, .he checked, back with them every seven years. Apted said the task of putting together the film was enormous because of the amount of film footage he had and the range of subjects he covered. He said the task became longer and more difficult each time out. Reader's Theatre actors By ANIKET MAJUMDAR Staff Writer The stage adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates' short story "Narcotic" from her "The Goddess and Other Women" anthology is being presented by the UNC Reader's Theatre this week. Opening tonight, the play is about an evening in the life of Neil Myer, a hospital orderly ("a nobody, really"), who decides to visit Paula Shapley, who has just been released from the hospital after being treated for a barbiturate overdose. Director and adaptor Greg Cave naugh uses two narrators in addition to the two characters in the story. A junior RTVMP and English major, Cavenaugh is making his second direc torial attempt for the Reader's Theatre. It does not hold back any thing. While some of the subjects end up leading productive, successful lives, others do not make it. If the film teaches anything, it teaches that life is an undertaking, and how far one gets depends largely on how much effort one is willing to put into it. Luck may be a factor, as one of the film's' very successful subjects says, but the film shows us that hard work, ambi tion and a belief in one's purpose are much more important. Apted said he had two major regrets about the film. He said he didn't interview enough women, and by missing that opportunity he totally missed the feminist revolution. Secondly, he said he wished he had interviewed more middle class people. Had he done that, he would have made a better statement about what was happening in the troubled British economy, he said. Apted has received both praise and criticism from sociologists and psy chologists about the film, but he remained down-to-earth about his abilities as a social filmmaker. "All 1 have is my interest in the people," he said. In closing, Apted spoke of some of his experiences with the people in his film during interviews. He explained that the 14-year-old portion of the interviews was so brief, because it was "horrendous" dealing with teenage minds. "The minds of them at 14 were fairly impenetrable," he said. He expressed regret that one of the men was not completely open and honest with his answers. When Apted would ask a question about the man's personal feelings about his life, the man would get defensive. Apted said he didn't think that subject would participate in the 1991 interviews. But he said he did believe that the two men who did not participate in the 1984 interviews would decide to do it in 1991, since the film has become so popular. Finally, Apted found fault with his tendency to impose his own ideas and philosophies on his subjects, while he interviewed them. He said that may have been the reason some of them were defensive with their answers at times. But he didn't come down on himself too hard. "A filmmaker is not some sort of great cerebral person," he said. "I mean, he is who he is." Machynllet, Wales. "This is a com pletely different concept. You have to communicate with the audience directly, and you cannot get involved with the. characters," he continued. "You have to be careful not to get carried away," added Jacobs, a junior drama major from Miami, Fla.
