to sign it. "There was definitely coer
cion," he said.
UNC diving coach Barry Thomas,
one of Comfort's two full-time assist
ants, said the swimmers should have
solved the problem tin-house.r' Thomas
said: "One of the weaknesses with their
argument is they obviously wanted to
avoid a confrontation with Frank.
Rather than looking at themselves
the source of the problem they're
pointing to Frank.
"The ones that signed it were the ones
that were more lax (in workouts). The
ones that didn't sign it were more
successful."
O'Brien agreed. "You only get out
what you put in," she said. "People are
looking at Frank when it's their own
problem."
Th" petition also rc.id in part: "High
Mikeman
school coaches and swimmers observe
our program and become increasingly
reluctant to sign athletes with
Carolina."
Some petitioners said the UNC swim
program had acquired a nationwide
reputation for hurting swimmers'
careers, causing a recruiting slump.
Thomas agreed that UNC's recruiting
has not been up to par this year. "But
what's one lean year out of 10?" he
asked.
All team members interviewed said
that if Comfort did not resign, they
would still swim for the team next year.
"I don't think anyone wants to give
up," said a freshman swimmer who did
not wish to be identified. "But we will
keep fighting until something comes out
of this."

which he held to his chest. "You see.
Wilbur is pretty shy and you'll only be
able to get him out with some cheers,"
he explained. Walker then danced
across the floor on roller-skates, leading
the crowd in "the wave."
Walker also led the crowd in a round
of "All my life, I wanted to go to
Carolina."
A bid for a co-mikemanship was
made by Gary Kayye, a junior from
Angier, and David Clary, a sophomore
from Richmond, Va. Both wore blue
sport shirts as they chanted, "2-7-9-8,
this is how we count at State."
They did "the Carolina hokie-pokie"
with cups of beer and led the chant
"North Carolina," while swaying their
arms over their heads.
The new mikeman will learn to work
with cheerleaders and the band by
attending one or two practices, said
Teresa Pollard, UNC cheerleading
adviser.

today's vote on divestment would reflect
a consensus of all the board members,
he said.
Porter said his vote in today's meeting
would be influenced by a combination
of his feelings of responsibility to the
University, his personal conscience and
student input.
Phillips said he would not make his
final decision on the issue until today's
board meeting.
