Couple die
in collision
From Associated Press reports
INTERCOURSE, Pa. An
Amish couple was killed Monday
when their horse-drawn carriage
collided with a tractor-trailer and was
dragged more than 100 feet along a
rural road in Lancaster County, state
police said.
Melvin Beiler, 55, and Katie Beiler,
52, of Gordonville, Lancaster
County, were pronounced dead at the
scene by Deputy Lancaster County
Coroner Vincent Walsh.
The couple were riding in their
horse-drawn carriage when a tractor
trailer driven by Ronald Yoder, 32,
attempted to pass them, said state
police dispatcher Sandra Sweigart.
Beiler apparently did not see the
truck enter the passing lane and
turned left, hitting the front of the
truck, Sweigart said.
The carriage became pinned under
neath the tractor-trailer, which
dragged it for 109 feet before coming
to a stop, Sweigart said.
No charges have been filed, Swei
gart said. The truck driver was not
injured, she said.
U.S. funds
not used
From Associated Press reports
MIAMI The United States has
paid rebels fighting the leftist Nica
raguan government thousands of
dollars for food, clothing and medical
supplies that merchants say were
never purchased, according to a
report published Sunday.
The rebels, based in Costa Rica,
also allegedly charged the United
States for enough supplies to outfit
at least 1 ,000 insurgents, even though
their numbers have totaled less than
385, The Miami Herald reported.
The allegations, by rebel sources
and merchants in Costa Rica, were
made against the Nicaraguan Revo
lutionary Armed Forces, a small
rebel unit led by Fernando "El
Negro" Chamorro, and the Costa
Rican branch of Kisan, a tiny group
of blacks and Indians from Nicara
gua's Atlantic coast, the newspaper
said.
Both groups are affliated with the
United Nicaraguan Opposition, the
umbrella organization of Un
supported Contra rebel groups trying
to overthrow the Sandinists.
About $1.89 million of the $27
million in U.S. humanitarian aid
given to the Contras has been spent
in Costa Rica.
