Wolf keeps his cool
among cast of 5,000
Joe Wolf was surrounded. Sur
rounded by about 5,000 Carolina
Blue clad or painted people, includ
ing the three girls who each had
one word of ul Love Joe" on their
T-shirts, the three body-painted
guys who were grudgingly pulled
from the picture, the Anthony Per
kins and Ed Bartles and Frank -Jaymes
full-size mock-ups, the guys
hanging out of the South Building
windows (yes, you were in the pic
ture), the baseball team members
who had P stenciled on their
chests in blue, and one very harried
but very efficient Sports Illustrated
photographer named Manny
Millan.
So how did Wolf keep smiling
through a photography session in
90-degree heat? "Girls kept pinch
ing my butt," he joked. "At least 1
hope they were girls."
These are just jokes, friends, just
jokes. And there were lots of them
in and around the steps of South
Building at 3 p.m. Thursday on the
steps. If you weren't there in your
oversized hat of Rameses, maybe
that was you in the Carolina Blue
toga or the Carolina Blue bathrobe
or the Carolina Blue boxers.
It wasnH a nasty, last-day-of-drinking
crowd. More like one that
even in the midst of what still seems
like summer is ready for basketball.
And to get their picture in a
national magazine. The steps were
already full by 2 p.m. By 2:45 p.m.,
Millan was clicking away from a
ladder and trying to keep a semb
lance of order.
"Please, put your hands down in
front," Millan pleaded to a number
of students who insisted on putting
"No. 1" signs directly in front of
Wolfs face. "I need to see Joe!"
It was all part of the Sports Illus

Pep rally slated
From staff reports
It's not your usual pep rally tonight,
as members of each of the UNC
sports teams playing at home this
weekend, plus the "Usuals" band will
provide entertainment for a pep rally
scheduled at 8 p.m. at Frat Court.
The pep rally festivities begin at
3 p.m. as the band and cheerleaders
march through campus. Then at 8
p.m. the actual rally starts. Speakers
from the field hockey, men's and
women's soccer and football teams
will talk briefly, as will a UNC
assistant football coach. The UNC
band will entertain, as will the
Usuals.
"We're trying to bring back the
pep rally tradition to UNC," said
Yvette Moxin, one of the rally's

November. "We're hoping it will be
a double-page spread," said Millan,
who pacified the masses by taking a
number of shots after the fact,
when there were still a number of
people hanging around and hoping.
The picture is not for the cover
of SI, but instead for an article on
Wolf centered on the theme of Big
Man on Campus. If you were out
there and between the two large
hedges that border the South Build
ing stairs, you stand a decent shot
at being able to use a magnifying
glass and find what might be your
face come November.
Wolf, who for those of you who
couldn't see was standing on a
small crate, said he thought maybe
100 or 200 people would show up.
"This was crazy," he said. "It was
so hot. And I know there were
5,000 people around who were hot
ter than 1 was, because there was a
breeze up there."
As a rather unneeded incentive,
SI had decided to draw five names
of people to have a picture taken
with Wolf and then made into a
mock SI cover. One of the winners
was freshman Rhonda Willis, who
squealed happily as the photo
grapher told her to put her arms
around Joe and smile.
"Oh, it was so great!" she said.
"But I don't even know him. I
mean, I've got a boyfriend."
Wolf made it through three jer
sey changes like a champ, grinning
as people yelled "Joe! Joe! Joe!" He
will be interviewed by Austin
Murphy of Sports Illustrated today
for the feature.

organizers. "We're very excited
about this."
The pep rally is sponsored by the
Carolina Athletic Association and
six fraternities Delta Kappa
Epsilon, Sigma Alpha Epsilon,
Sigma Nu, Sigma Chi, Pi Kappa
Alpha and Beta Theta Pi.

For the past two weeks the vote
for No. 1 has been a unanimous
decision, while the team has beaten
four top ten opponents during this
time with their strong offense.
Players to watch this weekend are
three-time All-America forward
April Heinrichs, forward Bettina
Bernardi and midfielder Marcia
McDermott. Heinrichs, a senior who
has scored at least one goal in the
eight games in which she has played,
has led UNC in scoring in each of
the past three seasons.
In other Fetzer Field action, the
men's unranked soccer team will face
Furman Saturday at 4 p.m., trying
to improve its 7-4 record.
The top-ranked UNC field hockey
team will host two games on Astro
turf Field this weekend. The Tar
Heels will defend their new status
Friday at 7 p.m. against Appalachian
State and Sunday at 1 p.m. against
William and Mary.
Led by forwards Claire Dougherty
and Julie Blaisse, and midfielder
Lori Bruney, the team promises
some exciting play. UNC will also
face Virginia at home Oct. 8 at 7

Among the teams on the road this
weekend will be UNC's volleyball
squad. At the William and Mary
Tournament in Williamsburg the

Dawn Wood and Jill Berkebile.
North Carolina women's tennis
team, which has only competed in
tournaments so far this year, will also
be at William and Mary this Sat

travel to Richmond for their second
match of the weekend.
Both the men's and women's cross
country teams will be at the Wake
Forest Invitational at Winston
Salem on Saturday. Both teams have
competed twice already and won.
Look for Reggie Harris and Jim
Farmer to do well in the men's 8000
meter run, while Vicki Verinder and
Karpl Chambers are expected td
excel in the women's 5000 meter
competition.
Resting this weekend are the men's
and women's golf teams whose next
