A free back-to-school bash will be
held in the Great Hall from 8 to 1 1
p.m. today by the Carolina Union
Activities Board.
Under the new alcohol policy,
students 21 years old or older can
bring one six-pack of beer or wine
coolers with proof of age, said Alex
Dickey, social chairman of the
activities board. Students will be
wear wristbands to show proof of
their age.
Otherwise, students may buy soft
drinks in the fast-break area, and

each perform an 75-minute set, with
a 20-minute intermission between
the gigs. According to Rick Maec
hling, activities board current issues
chairman, the bands play good, fun
rock-and-roll. Most members of the
bands are either students or alumni.
'Our purpose is to basically
provide a free concert with local
talent, which several students have
requested," Dickey said.
The activities board hopes to fill
Great Hall with 450 to 500 students.

The initial screening of the appli
cations took 15 hours, Mitchell said,
and the total process could take as
many as 150 to 200 hours.
"Our union has one of the best
reputations in the country," she said.
"This position is very competitive,

Appelbaum said he was unable to
release the applicants' names, but did
say that the majority of them had
union experience.
Wiggins said the current director,
Howard Henry, will probably retire
by the end of June, making way for
the newly appointed director to
begin work around the first of July.

The position of director has
