ecruitnrent program
gives minorities a look
By SALLY PEARSALL

Between 260 to 290 rising high
school seniors will arrive on
campus today to participate in
Project Uplift, UNC's minority
recruitment program.
According to Archie Ervin,
assistant to the vice chancellor for
University affairs, Project Uplift
has been very successful in the past
in encouraging minority students
to come to UNC. "(Project Uplift)
generates quite a bit of interest in
the University, and subsequently
generates a large number of appli
cations to the University," Ervin
said.
The two-day program, which is
designed to introduce North
Carolina high school students to
college life on the UNC campus,
includes class and laboratory
sessions as well as informal group
discussions led by UNC students.
"The students come here to
learn about college life in general,
not necessarily at UNC," said
Allan Younger, a student counse
lor with the project.
Ervin said Project Uplift's staff
consisted of about 19 UNC stu
dents who were trained as coun
selors for the visiting students.
"(The counselors) live with them
in the dorms and generally just act
as a big brother or sister for these
students while they're here," he
said.
Project Uplift participants will
be housed in Avery, Parker and
Teague dormitories, Ervin said.

Crazy canine campaign gets
human(e) political treatment
By SALLY PEARSALL

Are U.S. voters ready to
accept man's best friend as the
top dog in the Oval Office?
That's the crucial question that
presidential candidate Punch B.
Burger must answer in his cam
paign, because Punch is a special
breed of politician half Ger
man shepherd, half keeshond.
In fact, Punch may be the first
canine candidate ever to run for
President of the United States.
And Punch's owner campaign
manager Laura Van Sant, who
registered him in April 1985,
couldn't be more pleased.
Van Sant, a junior from
Chapel Hill, said she nominated
Punch after reading a book
about how easy it was to become
a presidential candidate. She
filled out two federal election
forms, which called for basic
information about Punch as well
as the name of his campaign
treasurer. "It was almost like
applying for a credit card," she
said.
Since he filed for candidacy.
Punch has received monthly
Federal Election Committee
(FEC) newsletters. "They're
basically just a summary of court
cases that affect election laws,"
Van Sant said.
Every three months, Punch
receives financial reporting
forms requesting lists of contri
butions to his campaign. "I
haven't sent them in for a while,"
Van Sant said. 1 used to put

In search of an associate director
By MICHAEL JACKSON
Staff Writer
The search should soon be
rekindled for a new associate
director of the Campus Y, accord
ing to director Zenobia Hatcher
Wilson. A previous search in the fall of
1986 was unsuccessful in finding
a replacement for former associate
director George Gamble. -The
Campus Y continued without the
guidance of an associate director,
but employed two program assist
ants from August 1986 to May
1987, Hatcher-Wilson said.
Planning for a new search
committee should begin soon after
the new chairmen of the Campus
Y's advisory board assume their
duties on June 30. The chairmen
of the advisory board are respon
sible for appointing people to
committees, in accord with the
advisory board's bylaws, Hatcher
Wilson said. ...
Originally, a search committee
was formed according to the
advisory board's bylaws. The
committee was comprised of the
Campus Y co-presidents, two non
students of the advisory board,

two students at large and the
Campus Y's director, Hatcher
Wilson, who chaired the
committee.
The regional search was adver
tised in area newspapers and
brought in 95 applications, she
said. The committee invited 10 of
the applicants to the campus for
interviews. "We put a lot of time
and effort into the first search, but
it was a unanimous decision of the
search committee not to hire any
of those people based on the
interviews we had," she said.
Hatcher-Wilson said she hopes
the Campus Y will have named
a new associate director by Jan.
I, 1988. "I continue to be excited
over the prospect of having a new
associate director aboard," she
said.
Former associate director
George Gamble resigned amid
student protest in October 1985,
but remained throughout the
academic year on the condition
that he sign a letter of resignation
dated May 15, 1986.
