NT 4The Tar Heel Thursday. May 28. 1987 rm Ms Bund's for Bimlb's rf- smooth transition By PATRICK RADFORD Staff Writer When the owners of Bub O'Malley's opened the bar, they intended to attract the students of Chapei Hill and give them a new place to go. And so far, they have been very successful at doing this. After Sam Shaffer and his wife Cynthia closed The Last Resort restaurant in March, they and part-owners Greg Bercowy, Mike Stout, and Ben "Bud" Wysor opened Bub's on April 14 and business has been great for them ever since. "This place has been packed almost every night since day one," said Greg Bercowy, who was one of The Last Resort's waiters. "We felt that by providing good cheap beer and a friendly atmosphere, we could give the Chapel Hill students a bar that does not cost an arm and a leg to have a good time." The problem with The Last Resort, Shaffer said, was that the restaurant, which featured entrees of prime rib and veal, was really not oriented toward students. Shaffer and his wife felt that the restaurant's location, at the down town end of Rosemary and Frank lin Streets, did not draw the PUHDY'S presents - Hie, CoMedY You'll bust a gut laughing at Chapel Hill's 1 Comedy Club! 1 Show Thursday 9:00 PM Doors Open at 8:00 Appearing Tonight Al Cleveland Also Appearing: Grant Taylor Brad Reader Come see a smashing show and then dance to the hottest music in town! Bercowy said that the food menu, which includes cheesebur gers, french fries, and other inex pensive fast foods, gives people on campus the opportunity to eat at the bar, have a beer, and spend under three dollars. "You really can't compare Bub's to any other bar in Chapel Hill," said part-owner Mike Stout. He felt that other bars downtown have their own identity, which causes competition. MI feel that Bub's is a combi nation of other bars in town," said Julie Rowe, a graduate student. "Bub's has cheap beer prices, a great juke box, and good food what else could one ask for?" Bercowy said he had been to many college towns before and he felt that Chapel Hill really needed another bar to satisfy the students needs. "I strongly believe that through good music, fair beer prices, and a friendly atmosphere we can do the job," he said. It did not take much time or money to convert The Last Resort into a bar. A few walls were knocked down and some tables and benches were built to replace the 94 chairs that were in the Summer School Students semester This unique offer includes use of Nautilus and Universal weight equipment, Olympic sized pool, gym, racquetball courts and full instruction-by Y CA staff. "Everything went pretty smooth in converting this place into a bar," said Bercowy. "I believe that the biggest advan tage that we had in starting a bar is that we all had some type of restaurant or bar experience, so we had a general idea of what would appeal to the students." Bercowy also felt that another advantage the bar had is that it only employs five people, who are YS1C A 942 - 51 56 ',U-w'i $ ... fill all owners, compared to the staff of 30 that the restaurant used. Bub O'Malley's Pub acquired its name from a small wooden wine cork carved like an old man, which was dubbed "Bub O'Malley." Shaffer purchased Bub and the rest of Bub's family when he owned Troll's bar. He used Bub and his cork family to entertain the Troll's customers and Bub soon became identified with Troll's and Shaffer. "One time Bub O'Malley was paged at a Carolina football game Two minutes for Calabash Every second counts when you're cookin' Calabash. When the color's perfect you're done, and that's always less than two minutes. That's why Calabash seafood has so much taste and tenderness, heaped up high on your plate! Shaffer and the other owners decided that since Bub O' Malley was such a popular figure, they should name the bar in his honor. "The O'Malley family can be found on top of the bar's beer selection just behind the bar, while Bub sits on the cash register and counts the money going in and out," said Bercowy. is too long Dinner: 5-9.
