36The Tar HeelThursday, July 16, 1987 E Something for everyone involvement at the University UNC cultivates a bevy of University-recognized organiza tions, activities, honor societies and campus publications to suit virtually every interest. Here's a brief description of some of them: The Association of Interna tional Students helps foreign students to become acquainted with American culture and the University through various activ ities, such as the Campus Friends program. The AIS also aims to increase international understand ing. The AIS is located in the International Center in the Stu dent Union. The Black Student Movement is composed of a central commit tee and several sub-committees with particular goals. The sub committees include cultural, aca demic and special projects com mittees as well as The Black Ink, the official newspaper and voice for the opinions of the BSM about issues that affect minorities on campus; the Freshman Class Committee, which sponsors the BSM's Freshman Class Talent show, among other activities; the Ebony Readers, a dramatic group that performs works by black authors; the Opeyo Dancers; and the BSM Gospel Choir. The BSM office is in Suite A of the Student Union. Campus Y, located in the Y Building on campus, offers stu dents opportunities to develop public service efforts among the campus community by coordinat ing volunteer work, raising funds for charities, working for change through political lobbying, spon soring educational programs and promoting awareness of social and political issues. Y projects include the Big Buddy Program, in which UNC students volunteer to become a companion for a young child; Campus-Community Link, which pairs a UNC student with a homebound elderly member of the community; and Y-Outreach, which works toward solving local social problems. The Y also spon sors tutoring programs for area schools. The Y supports a Dinner Discussion Group, Freshman Camp, People Acting Against Racism and the Women's Forum. Carolina Gay and Lesbian Association sponsors dances, programs, "Gay Awareness Week," and an outreach program to provide educational and social services to the student community. CGLA also publishes a newletter, LAMBDA, twice each semester. The membership list is confiden tial. The CGLA office is on the second floor of the Student Union. The Symposium office is in the Student Union. Carolina Union Activities Board, located in the Student Union, operates through several committees to provide entertain ment and education to students through movies, speakers, con certs, seminars and workshops. The president and board members are selected in the spring through open interviews and committee members are chosen in the fall. Committees include Film, Human Relations, Performing Arts, Pub licity and Public Relations. Chimera, the UNC Fantasy and Science Fiction Club, is a social organization for UNC students who like playing, writing or reading science fiction and fantasy. Chimera sponsors an annual convention in January, the Chimera Con. The Clef Hangers is an a capella men's singing group that performs a variety of musical styles. The group is made up of 12-14 men who perform two to three concerts on campus each year. The Clefs also have annual tours of the East Coast. Nihongo o Hanasu Kai wel comes anyone who desires practice speaking Japanese. The group provides those studying Japanese with a chance to practice the language in an informal structure with other students and native Japanese. North Carolina Student Legislature involves students in 489-7191 The original family haireutters.) the legislative process of govern ment through a mock general assembly. The individual school branches of the NCSL write and vote on bills, which are then . presented to state poltical leaders. The NCSL holds an Annual Session in March, when all the delegates from the state present bills to the branches of different universities around the state. The NCSL office is located in the Student Union. The Radio, Television, and Motion Pictures Student Associ ation allows RTVMP majors to meet others in the field, including students and faculty. The organ ization sponsors guest speakers and other activities. Rape and Assault Prevention Escort is a service that was estab lished six years ago to guard the safety of women walking across campus at night. Women can call the service's operator, who then dispatches an escort to meet her. Escorts are selected by their Resident Assistants. The Residence Hall Associ ation serves as a liason between students and University Housing, voicing the concerns of dormitory residents to University offcials. RHA also helps to fund and plan all-campus events and makes policy decisions concerning stu dents. The RHA president is elected in the spring, the same time as the student body president, and other appointed positions are available. The RHA office is located in the Student Union. The organization's office is Dey Hall 014-A. Student Congress, the legis lative branch of Student Govern ment, decides how to divide student funds among University recognized organizations and passes legislation concerning the campus. Members are elected from campus districts each year. Student Congress is located in Suite C of the Student Union. Student Government, Exec utive Branch includes the offices of president, vice president and executive committee members. This body researches various issues, such as drinking on campus and parking problems. Students can become involved with the executive branch by filling out an application in Suite C of the Student Union. Student Government, Judicial Branch, part of the University Honor System, comprises the Office of the Student Attorney General and the Undergraduate Honor Court, which hears the cases of student honor code vio lators. Applications for the staff and court are also available in Suite C. The UNC Anti-Apartheid Support Group and Action Against Apartheid are activist sutdent groups designed to edu cate students about the unjustices being committed in South Africa. The groups regularly hold protests and constructed shanties on cam pus last year to simulate the conditions facing blacks under the apartheid system of government. The UNC Loreleis is an a capella singing group of 12 women that performs two concerts at UNC each year, and also sings for local civic and alumni groups. Theaters from page 13 Two theaters out of town may be of special interest to students. The Carolina Theater, located in downtown Durham, is famous for its showing of current art films, including "Man Facing Sou theast" and "Prick Up Your Ears." Opened in 1926 as a public aud itorium, the theater is now a historic landmark, said manager Stephen Barefoot Alcoholic bev erages are served at the theater. The Rialto Theater, 1600 Glen wood Avenue, is the oldest inde pendent single-screen operation in Raleigh. The theater shows clas sics, independent and foreign films, and no film stays for longer than one week, said owner Roy Harp. The Rialto often shows a double features of movies by the same director or with the same themes, and sometimes the theater plays an entire film festival of one director's work. The Rialto opened, in 1939,, and Harp has owned it since 1980.
