v 12ATho Daily Tar HcclThursday, August 27, 1987 winters off Bnito's Pmb have recipe for success ByTOMMCCUISTOM ' Staff Writer Returning UNC bar hoppers will find a wider range of options as they descend on the local bar scene, thanks to the addition of Chapel Hill's newest hot spot, Bub O'Malleys. Sam Shaffer, a former owner of The Last Resort restaurant, con verted the restaurant into Bub's, which opened in mid-April of this year. Shaffer said he and co-owners Greg Bercoury, Mike Stout, Bud Wysor and Shaffer's wife, Cynthia, wanted to attract the student crowd with such amenities as a juke box, pinball machines, a wide-screen television, hot food and cold beer. MIt's comfortable and real afforda ble here," said Mark Brown, a junior from Raleigh, as he returned from the bar with another pitcher refill. "Most of the people here have a lot in common. "There are a lot of similar music tastes and a lot of the people have the same short-term goals," Brown added with a grin. Shaffer said the location wasnt so good for a restaurant because people did not want to compete with the student crowd. MWe figured it would be more profitable (to operate) as a bar." "Bub's has the most beer for your money," said Scott Rankin, a senior from Lincolnton. "The crowd is riot too rowdy and not . too mellow. Everybody seems to enjoy themselves." Bub's owners had no doubts about opening a new bar in Chapel Hill. "Having three bars in one building (Jordan's, Troll's, Bub's) definitely helps," Shaffer said. "Some people will drink at Troll's and then come up here for a beer." j Bub's is unique among other Chapel Hill bars because it offers hot foods such as hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken filets, he said. Shaffer remains optimistic about the bar's future success. He said by keeping the bar clean and the beer prices low, Bub's owners would be able to remain competitive with other Chapel Hill bars. "We won't retire on what weVe made so far," Shaffer said. "But we won't go broke either." Fall Semester 1987 Semester Opens ; Aug. 19 Registration . . Aug. 24-26 First Day of Classes. That mystery may soon be solved. Taco Bell is scheduled to open a store on Franklin Street by Oct. 1, said Darrell Harris, construction manager for Taco Bell in the Carolinas. The store will be located at the site of the former Revco drug store. The space became available last fall when Revco chose not to renew its lease. Minor adjustments in the store's plan to comply with state building codes have delayed Taco Bell's opening by several months, Harris said. But, he added, construction should be completed by Sept. 17. The Chapel Hill location, with a seating capacity of 105 people, will be the largest in the southeast, he said. The store will have more than 2,400 square feet of operating space. On weekdays when classes are in session, the S, C and N routes make regular stops at the parking lots and NGMH. The L route stops at the parking lots, but does not service the hospital. During weekdays when classes are not in session, the S, C, N and U routes will operate between the F and FR lots and the hospital to provide service to bus users who are not affected by the University's academic calendar. Early morning stops beginning at 5:45 a.m. at the two parking lots were added to the S route on all weekdays to aid hospital employees. A shuttle service was also added to the schedule to make trips from the hospital back to the parking lots. The shuttle leaves the hospital every 12 minutes between 7 p.m. and midnight. Bob Godding, director of transpor tation at Chapel Hill Transit, said the fee for the shuttle is the same as for regular bus routes: 25 cents or a bus pass. Other changes in bus routes are stops at the Highland Hills apart ments on the J route and stops at Greenfields apartments on the D route, Godding said.
