6The Daily Tar HeelFriday, October 2, 1987 Panthers cut loose in Cat's Cradle show Tav Falco and the Panther Burns put on a concert of rock-a-billy music in the Cat's Cradle Wednesday night that worked best when the band stayed closest to the up-tempo style of dance music for which it is most acclaimed. Although the concert sometimes dragged during the slower songs, the band often caught fire during its renditions of old-timey rock V roll stomps. The Panther Burns, featuring band founder Falco on lead vocals, used a straight-ahead style of musical attack that frequently managed to excite the small but appreciative crowd at the Cradle. The Panther Burns brought punk like intensity to some standard rock-a-billy and pop songs, and this was particularly impressive on the versions of old, redneck rave ups like uShade-Tree Mechanic." The show seemed to suffer during some of the slower parts, such as the Panther Bums' some what goofy attempt at playing tango music. The band also occa sionally lost the audience, such as when the lead guitarist and bass player had a brief but incoherent jam session between songs. But when the band cut loose and roared, the results were sometimes David Hester Concert spectacular. They played a great double-time version of the Nat King Cole classic "Mona Lisa." The Panther Burns' version of the song featured driving guitars and half-yelped, half-crooned vocals, and this demonic performance of a lounge-act standard generated an excitement and an energy that is rarely seen on area stages. The best musical performance of the evening, however, may have been delivered by opening band Southern Culture on the Skids. Southern Culture's laid-back mus ical style and vocal harmonies were extremely impressive, and the band's mix of rock 'n' roll and traditional Southern styles was very well done. The headlining Panther Burns also gave a good performance although it was occasionally flawed by lulls in intensity. The Panther Burns' brand of driving rock 'n' roll was powerful enough to overcome these flaws and it allowed the band to give a gener ally exciting show. While here, I got to talking with the Carrington clan about UNC sports, and they got really interested. The Carringtons wanted to know what was going on with the Tar Heel sports teams this weekend. Blake said, "I was thinking of purchasing the football team. I want to know who they're playing this week so I can see the boys in blue in action." I replied, "The Tar Heels will be at home in Chapel Hill to take on No. 6 Auburn. The Tigers are 2-0-1 . Game time is 1 p.m." Blake told his wife (whose hair hasn't moved an inch in four seasons), "Krystle, honey, call my pilot. I will be in Chapel Hill Saturday. Oh yeah, get me a seat next to Woody in the press box." Alexis started frowning as though she felt she was being outdone by the Carrington patriarch. The only woman who consults Tammy Bakker for make-up tips interjected, "Wait a minute. Wait one minute. If you buy one UNC team, 111 buy two. What are the other Chapel Hill teams doing this weekend?" A FILM BY CLAUDE BERRI IE wedding) and Blake that three other Tar Heel teams will see action this weekend. The No. 1 field hockey team in America is wearing Carolina blue these days, and the Tar Heels are gearing up for away games with ACC foes No. 1 1 Virginia on Oct. 6, and Maryland on Oct. 10. In their last two outings, the Tar Heels blanked defending NCAA champ Iowa last Saturday, 5-0, and set Old Dominion back a notch with a Sunday shutout, 4-0. While Betsy Gillespie and Lori Bruney have been leading the way for the undefeated field hockey team, Mike McGowan has been leading UNC's cross country teams. McGo wan, winner of the Sept. 26 Tar Heel Invitational, will be looking for his second title when both UNC squads race at Appalachian State Saturday. The men will run an 8,000-meter course at Moses Cone Estate at 10 a.m. and the women will take off on a 5,000-meter trail at 10:30 a.m. The UNC volleyball team will also see action this weekend in Pennsyl vania. Hitter Sharon German, who had 14 kills and still had time to help lead the Tar Heel net blockade in a three-game wasting of Virginia, will takeNorth Carolina to the Penn State Classic. Friday, German and the Tar Heels face Central Michigan. A double dip awaits UNC on Saturday, as the Tar Heels will take on George Washington at 1 p.m. and then face No. 20 Penn State at 7 p.m. Finally, I said, "Blake and Alexis, that should provide you guys with more than enough action to shake a stick at." Alexis got out her checkbook and wrote a check with "Payable to UNC Athletic Dept." on it and "Purchase" in the lower column of the check where you tell what it's for. Blake and I got into his 72-foot-long limo to ride to his private Concorde, which was waiting at his personal airport to bring us back to the cozy, country confines of Chapel Hill. If you want to see Mr. Carrington, just look up in the press box Saturday when everyone yells, "Woody, Woody !" Blake will be the guy waving the $100. Alexis will be there, too. Rumor has it she will be disguised as a UNC cheerleader. UNC will need bi effort vs. Arbitral By JAMES SUROWIECKI Assistant Sports Editor - Battered, broken and bruised are the Auburn Tigers. The No. 6 team in the nation will be without two of its starting offensive play ers, and two others are question- able for Saturday's game with UNC. So for the Tar Heels, the matchup in Kenan Stadium will be an excellent chance to kick a good team when it's down. The 2-0-1 Tigers are coming off a shocking 20-20 tie with Tennes see, shocking because Auburn led 20-10 early in the fourth period before letting the Volunteers creep back into the game. The Tigers will come into Chapel Hill without starting tailback James Joseph, who suffered a deep knee bruise against Tennessee, and offensive tackle Jim Thompson, who injured his knee in practice Tuesday. Of doubtful value against the Tar Heels will be offensive tackle Stacey Searels, who broke a hand and sprained an ankle at the start of the year, and guard Vincent Jones. Auburn coach Pat Dye said of them, "The offensive line is getting better, but we haven't been healthy there. Searels has played in a lot of pain with his hand and ankle. Jones hasn't gotten back to where he was." The injuries have far from declawed the Tigers, though. Auburn will feature a man-eating defense and senior quarterback Jeff Burger, who prior to the Tennessee game was the top-rated passer in the country. Burger can dominate a game, and it shouldn't take long for him to show his fangs Saturday. UNC coach Dick Crum shows no signs of underestimating the Tigers. - "Auburn is a powerful football team," he said. "Defensively, they're better than Oklahoma. Their defensive front is just out standing. They have great speed and skill on offense. In Burger, they have a veteran quarterback who's capable of making the big play for them." The Tar Heels, of course, have their own veteran big-play quar terback, in senior Mark Maye. After a slow start, Maye has begun to live up to expectations, and has completed 56 of 101 passes for 810 yards and five touchdowns. Last week, against Navy, Maye ran just six series, but produced a quintet of touchdowns and a field goal, while hitting on 11 of 16 passes for 143 yards. The big concern, of course, is whether dynamic tailback Torin Dorn will lend ground support to Maye's aerial attack. Dorn is averaging 119 yards rushing a game, but didnt play against Oklahoma and sat on the sidelines last Saturday. "I'm hoping both Torin and Howard will be back this week," Crum said. "But I also had hoped they would be ready last week, too. We could have played Torin at Navy, but he wasn't 100 percent. I'm hoping he will be closer to that this weekend."
