" 1 i Smyth-less soccer beats Fmurmain By DAVID HALL Stiff Writer - Playing without team captain Dave Smyth, the UNC men's soccer team was able to shake off its indifferent play Friday to post a 2-0 victory against the Paladins of Furman. The win upped North Carolina's record to 10-2. UNC, still suffering repercussions from the previous Sunday's loss at State, was not especially impressive against Furman. l think the boys did not play well at all in the first half," assistant coach Elmar Bolowich said. "They were a bit overconfident and it showed in their play, particularly on offense." The Tar Heels' first half could most liberally be described as erratic. Hampered repeatedly by turnovers in the middle of the field, UNC was never able to generate any sustained offensive thrusts. Even when they were able to get off shots, the players again demonstated their inability to put the ball in the net, a recurring motif in UNC's play thus far this season. The first, and ultimately deciding goal came at 37:33 after a UNC corner kick by midfielder Dino Megaloudis. The kick, travelling on a flat trajectory, was first headed backwards by Dave Merola to Chad Ashton. Ashton then headed the ball back to Merola, who knocked in the goal. It was Merola's second goal of the year, while for Ashton, it was his team-leading sixth assist on the season. Five minutes later, freshman Tommy Boykin added an insurance goal at 42:30. After a Furman foul at the top of the box, Megaloudis quickly sent a high-arcing free kick directly toward Boykin's head. Though falling backwards, Boykin was somehow able to kick the ball in and give UNC an insurmountable 2-0 lead. That goal was Boykin's sixth of the season, and the 5-8 freshman striker from Neptune, N.J., now leads the Tar Heel goal sweepstakes. After his marker, the game became a brutally futile exercise in absurdity. The referees took over and called a miserable game which allowed neither team to play its brand of soccer. "The calls did infuriate me but they had no effect on the outcome of the game," Bolowich said. "We played well enough to win against a very good squad. The officials did not bear heavily upon our victory." Perhaps the most glaring weakness for the Tar Heels in the second half was on defense. North Carolina, struggling to adapt to life without the injured Smyth, suffered repeated lapses on its end of the field. At one point, freshman sweeper Derek Missimo, normally a forward, attempted to clear the ball back to goalkeeper Darren Royer at 87:03. Instead, the ball was kicked directly to Furman forward Todd Bennett, who was positioned 30 yards in front of the goal with Royer out of the net. Unfortunately for Bennett, he hesitated while gaining control of the ball. And a potentially embarrassing UNC lapse was eradicated. Yet Bolowich had praise for Missimo. "He played well in spite of that one play," the assistant coach said. "He was placed in a difficult situation with the absence of Smyth." Thanks to excellent team leader ship on defense, particularly by defenders Steve Dragisics and Donald Cogsville, the team was able to sustain the shutout. The Tar Heels' next contest will come on Wednesday with a match against Catawba College. Game time is at 4 p.m. at Fetzer Field. UNC may be whole in time for that game. The injury to Smyth, who has been touted as a candidate for the Herrmann Award as the nation's best player, has been diagnosed as a sprained ankle. The prognosis is that he will play some time this week. Bolowich said Smyth's status remains day-to-day, but Smyth himself was a little more definite. "Ill play on Wednesday," he said. S'IWlffrf Mil DTH Charlotte Cannon UNC midfielder Dino Megaloutis takes a direct kick during UNC's 2-0 victory over Furman University Field hockey losesio Maryland , From staff reports COLLEGE PARK, Md. UNC's No. 1-ranked field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, 2-1 to eighth-ranked Maryland. On Sunday, the Tar Heels defeated William and Mary, 5-0. Maryland opened the scoring in the match, which was played on grass, when Lisa Buente scored off of a Kim Turner pass at 20:18. Carin Peterson took a Mary Konder pass and scored the game winner for the Terrapins just 5:27 into the second half. Kathy Staley fed Maryellen Fal cone for the lone Tar Heel goal with 24:47 left in the match. UNC fell to 7-1 on the year, while Maryland upped its record to 7-3-1. The Tar Heels came back Sunday and blasted William and Mary. Julie Blaisse and Betsy Gillespie scored on penalty strokes in the first half. B The women's soccer team had a predictably much better weekend. In Fairfax, Va., for the Vodicka Memor ial women's collegiate soccer tourna ment, the Tar Heels swept to four victories in two days. Saturday, UNC dumped Radford 1-0 and Hartford 4-0. Sunday, the Tar Heels blanked George Washington 3-0 and fifth ranked N.C. State 2-0. Hyatt scored at 8:50 in the first game off of an assist from Hegstad, while Henry scored unassisted three minutes later. Hegstad ended the Tar Heel scoring at 12:17 off assists from Tracey Bates and Gebauer. Against archrival State, Bates scored just 3:48 into the match after passes from Hegstad and Hyatt. Hegstad tallied the second goal at 72:18 unassisted. UNC plays today in the finals against eighth-ranked William and Mary at 10 a.m. But the Tar Heels will probably be without Serwetnyk, who sprained her ankle in Sunday's match, and Barnes, who hurt her knee against the Wolfpack.
