The Daily Tar HeelMonday, October 12, 19873 5 major companies will foe represented at annual career fair Szi:it ..- T FT!) ill .;' V 5- 7 By MANDY SPENCE Staff Writer The Carolina Career Fair will be held Oct. 13 and 14, from noon to 5 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Student Union. Minority Career Day will also be held Oct. 13. Representatives of 50 major com panies will be at the fair to discuss career opportunities with all inter ested students. The fair is one of many services offered by the University Career Planning and Placement Services (UCPPS). The office sponsors work shops on resume writing, interviewing skills, the off-campus job search, and other special programs. Another service the Career Plan ning and Placement Services offers is an automated job hotline. Students who are registered with the UCPPS office can get direct access to job openings on file at the office. The computer matches a student's major, preferred career areas and other job preferences with the job vacancies listed and relays the information to the student through a combination of human and synthesized speech. The office also sends out student resumes to prospective employers. "Every day employers call and want resumes of students," said Sharon Wiatt, associate placement director for UCPPS. Wiatt said about 89 percent of UNC seniors use the service, which has proved beneficial to most of them. "Just under 40 percent of the students used at least one of our services to obtain their current position," said Marcia Harris, direc tor of UCPPS. "Close to 80 percent used the service to brush up on resume writing or interview skills that may have led to a job for them." The UCPPS recommends that students begin job hunting two semesters before graduation. "An early start is critical in the job search," Wiatt said.
