Sports
Soccer" takes another eaisy win
Dy ANDREW PODOLSKY
Despite the fact that most of the
team has been nursing nagging
injuries all week, the defending
national champion UNC women's
soccer squad easily disposed of
Alabama 8-0 Sunday afternoon.
The top-ranked Tar Heels posted
all eight goals in the first half and
eased off in the second frame to push
their record to 16-0-1, while the
Crimson Tide dropped to 8-3.
The only dark cloud on the day
was the North Carolina injury situa
tion. UNC freshman Brandy Barnes
is out for the season, and possibly
longer, with a chronic arthritic
cartilage in her knee. "Right now
we're in a wait-and-see situation with
Brandy," said UNC coach Anson
Dorrance.
Other members of the Tar Heel
walking wounded club include junior
forward Wendy Gebauer with a sore
ankle, senior forward Carrie Serwet
nyk, junior Birthe Hegstad and
sophomore forward Julie Guarnotta.
All saw action on Sunday, but only
Hegstad and Guarnotta started.
Gebauer, Serwetnyk and Hegstad
account for 24 of UNC's 53 goals this
season. Serwetnyk's appearance was
the first since she missed the last three
games with an injury.
Sophomore midfielder Ava Hyatt
led Sunday's onslaught with two
goals, while Andrea Zeman, Pam
Kalinoski, Laura Boone and the
injury plagued trio of Hegstad,
Gebauer and Serwetnyk all contrib
uted single tallies.
"Most of the team is pretty banged
up," Dorrance said. "I was pleased
with Guarnotta's play today, and we
just wanted to see how Carrie was
coming along. She's still not quite 100
percent yet.
"We didn't want to embarrass
Alabama today," Dorrance con
tinued. "They are just starting a
program and were nice enough to
come on a long trip to play. We just
played a simple one-touch game after
the half."
Considering the competition, Ala
bama made a respectable showing of
the day. This year marks the second
official season of Alabama women's
soccer. Earlier this week, the Tide was
crushed 7-0 by N.C. State.
The Alabama squad includes 16
freshmen, three sophomores and one
junior. Only three of the players
return from last year's team.
"We are starting to play a little
better," said a somewhat dejected
Alabama coach Janko Emedi. "We
really have to work on our recruiting
a little. I guess we're as pleased as
we can expect to be with our progress.
"We are going to ask coach Dor
rance to help us by giving us some
names for next year's recruiting,"
Emedi said. "After all, UNC probably
gets thousands of potential players'
names sent to them each year."
In the game, UNC wasted little
time lighting up the scoreboard as
Zeman rolled a ball into the net 5:37
into the contest. Alabama goalie
Heidi Jentoft could have easily
intercepted the ball, but Alabama
defender Carrie Glibbery deflected it
into the net for a 1-0 UNC lead. Just
three minutes later Hyatt took a
sliding shot from 12 yards out on the
right side to move the score up to
2-0.
The next three minutes saw Heg
stad's rifle over Jentroft's head,
Kalinoski ripping the ball past a
dazed Tide defense and Hyatt's
second goal, a roller that creeped over
Jentroft's shoulder.
Suddenly, Alabama found itself on
the unhappy end of a 5-0 score with
over 65 minutes left in the contest.
Coach Emedi must have realized that
Jentroft was showing the advanced
signs of shell-shock, so he quickly
relieved her of her duties.
Enter the next victim: one Amy
Disponet, who jogged sprightly into
the firing-squad zone of Alabama's
goal crease. Gebauer greeted her with
a bullet off of a pass from Boone,
jumping the UNC lead to 6-0.
After Serwetnyk rainbowed a
header into the net, Gebauer returned
the favor by kicking the ball to Donna
Rigley, who shoveled a beautifully
set-up pass to Boone, who converted
it into her first goal of the season.
The Tar Heels went into halftime with
an 8-0 advantage.
Dorrance allowed junior goal
keeper Sherow to rest in the second
half, although she didnt really exert
herself too much in the initial half.
Meridee Proost took over the goal
keeping duties and basically watched
as UNC went into a crude form of
the old North Carolina basketball
freeze-ball game.
After practicing their passing for
awhile, the Tar Heels gave the
Alabama defense a workout and
assaulted the goal with shots, none
successful. The game quickly ended
with a 8-0 Tar Heel triumph.
The stat sheet leaned heavily in
North Carolina's favor as well. UNC
peppered the Tide goal with an
astounding 35 shots while Alabama
never mustered a threat on UNC
goalies Sherow and Proost.
The game also included six fouls
and seven offsides for the Tar Heels
and three fouls and one offsides for
Alabama. Most of these miscues
occurred in the sloppy second half
when UNC mercifully practiced its
keep-away, ball control offense.
So far this season, the Tar Heels
have outscored opponents by an
incredible edge of 53-2. They have yet
to be scored upon in the first half
either. With only one tie so far this
season, Dorrance seemed pleased.
"After we tied William and Mary,
I talked with the team about the keys
to our game," he said. "We have really
been working on the key areas of the
(goalie) boxes, organizing the attack,
backpost headers, and finishing
effectively, and I saw all of those
things today."
