6The Daily Tar Heel Friday, March 18, 1988 Sports Baseball stums USC again By CHRIS CHAPMAN Staff Writer Helped by four Gamecock errors, two Tar Heel home runs and a complete game from starter Jim Dougherty, UNC completed a two-game sweep of 21st-ranked South Carolina by an 11-5 score Thursday afternoon. The victory evened out UNC's season mark at 8-8. The game began shakily for Dougherty and the Heels, as South Carolina scored two first inning runs. The Gamecocks loaded the bases on a Hardin Brown one-out single, followed by a one-base error and a walk. Dougherty then hit Adrian Adkins to force in a run, and Gamecock catcher Tray Witt followed with a ground out to score Skeets Thomas. South Carolina sophomore starter Mike (Cyclops) Siopes, a Raleigh native, opened impres sively, retiring eight of the first nine batters. A two-out walk by Tom Nevin in the third inning ended Siopes' run, however, and keyed a six-run North Carolina inning. Darrin Campbell followed like to Campos Your Own Apartment. Chris DeFranco singled to bring Nevin in, Ron Maurer singled to load the bases and Chris Lauria put the Tar Heels ahead 3-2 with a two-run single. Jesse Levis finished the scoring with a three-run homer, which would prove to be all the scoring the Heels would need. South Carolina pulled close in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs with a two-run Mark Taylor homer and Darrin Campbell's error that allowed Songini to score. Siopes' wildness (three walks in the first three innings) brought in Gamecock reliever Tony Spires for his first appearance of the year, who came on in the fourth with no outs and one on. But Spires was not effective, as the junior transfer walked a batter and yielded a single and sacrifice fly to score two North Carolina runs and make the score 8-5. Spires' ineffectiveness showed in the fifth, as he continued to fall behind most Tar Heel batsmen. Spires walked Levis and gave up a homer to Dave Arendas to make v EstesPark f 967-M34 S ill m 'Kirtgswood if 967-M31 Jlr Mon.-Frt. 9-6 St 10- I Kingswood if " nni 1-5 the margin 10-5 North Carolina. Even the third Gamecock pitcher. Will Lewis, was not immune to the scatter-shot style afflicting his teammates, as his seventh-inning wild pitch allowed Ron Woodall to cross the plate and complete the scoring for the day. Meanwhile, Dougherty notched his third win of the season against only one loss, giving up only two earned runs on eight hits. The sophomore from Brentwood, N. Y., became stronger as the game progressed, striking out five in the last seven innings and walking only one batter, that in the first. The victory marked the second time this season that Dougherty and fellow sophomore Michael Hoog have notched back-to-back complete game victories. The two have six of UNC's eight wins. Coach Mike Roberts was pleased with the Heels third straight win, and their fourth victory in the last five games. "Right now, I'm happy with any victory, and, especially consider ing the competition, I'm very happy with our wins over South Carolina." Of the six, only two won their first round matches, and the rest anxiously had to wait to find out if they would wrestle again this year. Senior three-time Ail-American Rob Koll, the ACC's 158-pound champion, raised his record to 37-1 with a 14-6 decision over John Ripley of Army. Don't feel bad, though. Syracuse demol ished top-ranked Johns Hopkins just a week before to the tune of 19-7 -in Baltimore, at that. The Tar Heels will be putting their 3-1 record on the line as they face Pennsylvania on Sunday. But unfor UNC the Tar Heels failed to click offen sively. Still, Rick Fox's buzzer-beater put UNC up 40-24 at intermission. The Tar Heels wasted no time in emerging from the locker room and shaking off the blues that had plagued them on offense. UNC pounded the ball inside, as Reid began the spurt that put the Green Eagles away with a 12-foot jumper. After a Scott Williams layup and a Ranzino Smith trey, Reid slashed inside again for an easy hoop;-Jeff Lebo, who picked up five assists in the first five minutes of the first half, then flicked an alley-oop pass to Williams. Reid followed that by sandwiching a tough 12-footer off the dribble and a l-of-2 showing at the foul line around a Kevin Madden baseline basket. Reid's free throw gave UNC a 55-34 lead, and the Green Eagles would get no closer than 17 the rest of the way. Gales was suitably impressed with Reid's performance. "We gave him position too much, going for the ball instead of body position," Gales said. oHf latlg OTar Uni Classified Advertising Classified Info The Daily Tar Heel does not accept cash for payment of clas sified advertising. Junior Enzo Catullo, at 134 pounds, also won his first round match, defeating Mitch Tatonetti of Kent State, 13-5. Catullo took second in the conference for the third straight year, but is looking to become an Ail American for the first time. The rest of the wrestlers: John Welch at 126, Lenny Bernstein at 142, Ben Oberly at 177 and Glen Pazinko at 190, all lost their first-round matches. They were thus at the mercy of the system to find out if they were still to wrestle or not. In NCAA a busy weekend tunately for you lacrosse-starved maniacs, this one's in Philadelphia. This game won't be easy, as the Quakers are ranked 10th in the nation. Baseball Fresh off of a surprising perfor mance against 21st-ranked South Carolina, the Tar Heels will have a considerably easier opponent in Rider University, who will be . in Chapel Hill all weekend for a three game series. Interestingly, Rider is coached by former Tar Heel star Chris Pittaro's father. UNC will take an 8-8 record into this weekend after taking two games from the Gamecocks. "I didn't know he could shoot that well. I thought he was a layup shooter, but he can shoot very well." For all of Reid's prowess, though, the game never became a complete blowout, both because NTSU dom inated the offensive boards in the second half and because the Tar Heels took a mental vacation once they got the big lead. The Green Eagles' rebounding was paced by Ronnie Morgan, who drew the unenviable task of guarding Reid. Morgan never got into the flow on offense, finishing with seven points, but 'did grab a remarkable 19 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. NTSU as a team had 12 offensive boards in the final 20 minutes. "In the second half Morgan really went to the boards hard," Reid said. "All their players went hard to the board and got a lot of offensive rebounds. The game's biggest surprise was the non-role played by NTSU's Tony Worrell, the vaunted 6-7 swingman who came in averaging 20.3 points per game. Worrell was just l-of-7 in ABORTION To 20 Weeks. Loyola knocked, off an excellent Wyoming team 119 115 Thursday, and will present UNC with an exceptionally difficult task. The Tar Heels have never played, anyone quite like the Lions. "I don't know if we can win on Saturday," Smith said. "Anyone that plays Loyola has to be concerned with tempo, and we have to be stronger on the boards to be successful.
