8The Daily Tar Heel Wednesday, April 6, 1988 Sports v. Sims e wins key Mountaineers' m 5-4 victory over meo's tennis By BRENDAN MATHEWS Staff Writer The UNC men's tennis team made history Tuesday, but not the kind they'll be telling their grandchildren about. For the first time since 1908, when the The Tar Heels began play, the squad lost to West Virginia, a 5 4 home match to the 22nd-ranked Mountaineers. The loss, which follows a 9-0 thrashing at the hands of Clemson last Saturday, dropped the team to 12-8 for the season. West Virginia improved to 10-8. The match was even closer than the final score indicated, with neither team dominating the other. The young Tar Heel squad, which has no seniors and only one junior, hung :close throughout but was unable to come up with any key breaks against tne more experienced Mountaineers. Singles play killed the Tar Heels. as West Virginia jumped out to a 4 2 lead, forcing North Carolina to win all three doubles matches for any hope of a victory. While the Heels were able to come away with two wins, the Mountaineers' top team of Jobe Foley and Ray Kurey knocked off sophomore Don Johnson and freshman Thomas Tanner, 6-1, 6-3, for the match. Foley and Kurey had plagued UNC earlier, sweeping their singles opponents in straight sets. After a close first set, Foley pulled away from Johnson in a battle of No. l's, taking the match 7-5, 6-3. Kurey, playing in the sixth position, beat sophomore Derek Weilbaecher, 6-3, 6-2. The Mountaineers' other singles victories came in a 6-4, 6-2 win by Madhu Nair over sophomore James Krege and Radek Kocek's see-saw 7- Are You An Outgoing Friendly Person? Western Sizzlin' Wants You! Tuesday, April 5 thru Wed., April 8 10 am-7 pm Harris Teeter 1200 Raleigh Road, Chapel Hill, NC EOE MF 6, 2-6, 6-1 win over freshman John Bristow. Coach Allen Morris said the Bristow match was a turning point. "The key match was the Bristow loss," he said. "If we'd won that we could have beaten them overall. It was that close." But the young team showed flashes of brilliance in their two singles wins. After an easy 6-1 first set, West Virginia's Brad Kelly seemed en route to a quick victory over Andre Janasik. But Janasik rebounded to take the second set, 6-3. The third became a battle, as the two traded games until the UNC freshman pulled out the 7-5 win for game, set and match. Freshman Thomas Tanner, play ing at No. 2, was equally impressive, dispatching Paul Mancini 6-3, 4-6, 6 4. "I figured it would be close," Tanner said. "Going in I knew it would have to be one of my best matches. "In the second set I started to get tired," he continued."But in the third I got my second wind. I started hitting my first serves, and that was the difference." Although the Tar Heels came up short overall, the second and third doubles teams posted impressive victories. North Carolina's Krege and Bristow wiped out Kelly and Fry, 6 3, 6-3. Janasik and David Kessler, the team's only active junior, had a rougher time, but came up with the same result, beating Mancini and Nair, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the day's last match. Despite the loss, Morris was pleased with his young squad's performance. "I thought our boys played really well," he said. "To play a nationally-ranked team to 5-4 is encouraging, very encouraging." Tanner said that the Tar Heels showed their potential and that they are on the verge of regaining their status as a national contender. "Everyone on the team is at the same level," he said. "We're just a step away. We're all healthy and trying our hardest." Morris also considers the close finish to be a well-timed warm-up for UNC's three-match road trip against conference rivals Duke, Maryland and Virginia. "I'm hoping this will prepare us for the upcoming week," he said. "It should really give us momentum going into the three ACC road matches." Lacrosse Poll I.Syracuse (10) 6-0 150 2.
