8The Daily Tar HeelThursday, April 7, 1988 Manning's excellent Four capped terrific season For Danny Manning, winning the big one had been a long time coming. Manning and his Kansas team mates had been denied a trip to the finals in 1986 by Duke and Johnny Dawkins. This year Manning got a return bout and exacted his revenge on the Blue Devils, who don't have Dawkins anymore, but do have Danny Ferry. Saturday night in Kansas City, Mo., the 6-foot-10 Manning turned in a stellar performance to greatly aid his team in a 66-59 win over favored Duke. Then, on Monday night, Manning set out to write the final chapter in his college basketball biography. Thirty-one points, 18 rebounds and five blocks later, the national player of the year had lifted the eight-point underdog Jayhawks to an 83-79 win over the Oklahoma Sooners, and for the third time in the last five seasons America had another Cinderella to cheer for.? Perhaps Rollie Massimino, coach of the 1985 Villanova team that upset Georgetown, and Jim Valvano, the architect of the 1983 N.C. State masterpiece, cheered along with Kansas coach Larry Brown as the surprising Jayhawks stuck with the swifter, stronger Sooner team. What is so appropriate about the game is that the player of the year hit the most important shot of the year a last-second free throw, which gave Kansas a four-point lead. That sealed Manning's dream. rCICrrr 'mr: Estes Park Royal Park 967-2234 967-2239 Kingswood University Lake 967-2231 968-3983 jgsjhe Apartment People Limited Availability. In 1985, Villanova sought to win one for their dying trainer Jake Nevin. In 1988 Manning and Co., were out to win one for Archie Marshall, the star forward who tore up his knee earlier in the season. There was Marshall, at game's end, dressed in the blue Jayhawk uniform hugging Manning, the Most Valuable Player of the game and of the season. A fitting end to a basketball season that featured but one constant: parity. 1988 saw no dominant teams emerge to decimate the nation and the national rankings boards. No Pat Ewings or Akeem Olajuwons emerged to lead powerhouse teams into the Final Four. We didn't see any Phil Fords or David Thompsons carry their teams from the backcourt. What we did see was a freshman lead a top-ranked Temple team into the promised land of the East Regional Finals. Mark Macon finally showed he was only a first-year player, forcing shots and missing badly. In the end, Macon and Coach of the Year John Chaney watched Duke, led by defensive ace Billy King, cruise into Kansas City. il(fil3r "nFWnnnninn i m m i n -i mam oi : committed Cavaliers Fina We saw Oklahoma score more points than just about any team this side of the Lakers to reach the Big Dance in Kansas City. Remember Ferry, King and the rest of the Blue Devils standing in defiance at the conclusion of the ACC Tournament in Greensboro after defeating the North Carolina Tar Heels? It was the third time this season Duke had slipped past UNC and the Blue Devil win denied Dean Smith the tournament title for the sixth consecutive season. 1988 saw the end of many great careers, from Gary Grant to Rony Seikaly and finally the end for Mr. Manning, who had gone to Kansas after foregoing a chance to play for Smith in Chapel Hill. Manning had been ridiculed for a lack of intensity in his first three seasons in Lawrence. He had been criticized for leaving North Carolina and following his father, Ed, to Kansas, when Brown raised some eyebrows by giving the elder Manning an assistant's job. Danny Manning had been critic ized on just about all accounts. Today, though, he can say it was all worth it. Sofiballers lose two to Cavaliers By ROBERT D'ARRUDA Staff Writer The North Carolina women's softball team didn't get any breaks Wednesday afternoon, as the Univer sity of Virginia swept a twin bill from the Tar Heels at Finley Field. North Carolina had many chances to win the first game, but squandered away four key scoring opportunities before eventually succumbing to the Cavaliers 1-0 in 10 innings. Four different times the Tar Heels had a runner in scoring position with less than two outs, but were unable to produce a run. Their best chance was in the seventh inning, as Vicki Parrott opened the inning with a towering stand up double. Tracey Beine then laid " down a perfect sacrifice bunt, that enabled Parrott to take third base. At this point Virginia switched pitchers, with Lisa Palmer coming in to replace Kim Furphy. As Palmer enticed Gina Elmore to hit a soft fly to shallow left, Parrott was unable to tag up. The final Tar Heel batter of the inning, Amy Spelman, struck out. Tracy Brower started and worked an impressive complete game for the Tar Heels on the mound, yielding just six singles. More impressively, she surrendered just four hits after the first inning. Brower also chalked up four strikeouts, and issued two base on balls. The two teams finished the regu lation seven innings tied at 0-0. Two extra innings yielded no runs. So they entered the decisive tenth inning. By American Softball Association rules, each team starts the inning off with a "free" runner on second base. The Cavaliers immediately capital ized on a mental mistake by the Tar Heels to score the game's only run, and get the win, 1-0. In the game, the Tar Heels managed just seven hits, with Spelman getting two of those. All in all, the first game was a very frustrating game for the Tar Heels. They left eight runners on base, and probably should have won the game on several occasions. "We should have won the game," Brower said. "We had the runners on, but we didn't get them in. We also didn't get any breaks when we needed them. I also felt that we played really well, and this was a tough game to lose." From start to finish, the second game was all Cavaliers. Virginia used five first inning hits off of Tar Heel starter Regina Finn to storm to an early 2-0 lead. The Cavaliers kept the pressure on all game, and were relentless in nailing the Tar Heels with a 8-0 setback. The Tar Heels never could generate any offense, and at times looked bad out in the field. For the game North Carolina tallied six hits, but also five miscues. The lone sparkplug was senior Patti Gerckens who went 2-for-3, and made a spectacular diving catch to end a Cavalier rally in the fourth inning. As head coach Donna Papa put it, "When it rains, it pours." The two afternoon setbacks dropped the Tar Heels to a record of 18-16. while the improved their slate to 24- 10, having swept all four games from the Tar Heels this year.
