Student groups to train lobbyists As the N.C. Legislature gears up for its short session, the UNC National Student Movement and Campus Y will hold weekly meetings Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. to train students as lobbyists. The NSM's Teague car, Ryan said. While they were examining the windshield, a bystand er's arm was jostled, splashing his drink onto Ryan and the woman, Ryan said. "She swung around and said, you spit on me.' She threw her arm into his chest . . . and said you all will pay for this the chancellor will hear about this,' " Ryan said. The woman, who was visiting campus from Charlotte, then talked to Dean of Students Frederic Schroeder and Area Director Iris Hunt, said Brian Sipe, Scott Resi dence College governor. Schroeder refused to comment on the incident Tuesday, saying only that an investigation is continuing. On Saturday, April 23, members of the housing department and Teague government met to discuss what happened and how Teague could be changed, said Greg Zwilling, who was a resident assistant in Teague. The RAs at the meeting suggested various possible changes for Teague, from keeping residents who were written up for disciplinary problems from returning to Teague to changing it to a co-ed dormitory, he said. Sipe also met with Kuncl after exams and wrote him a letter when he returned home, asking that changes not be so drastic and that upperclassmen be allowed to stay in the dormitory. "I would hate to see (a change to an all-freshman dormitory) happen and I don't think it's right," Sipe said. "And co-ed would kill Teague. Maybe that's what they want to do that's a scary thought, though. "I'm really concerned about it I would hate to see something dramatic happen to Teague," Sipe said. "I think it can be a successful male dorm." Randolph said he was not con tacted by housing officials about the problems until this week. Both Martin and Randolph said they heard about the incident only through rumors from other students. They were to meet with Kuncl Wednesday, Randolph said. "This is not a dorm thing; it's just a few guys," Randolph said. "It does not seem to me to justify wiping a whole dorm out and starting fresh." "Some of those alternatives (offered at the meeting) were pretty radical. I hope those don't happen," Sipe said. "The government can make a difference and can play an active part (in making less radical changes in Teague). For the sake of the dorm, at least let us try." "Everyone in Teague was really fed up with this we dicta" ask for this (the incident at the party, Ryan said. "Teague has a certain c sion that other dorms lack; it's a sr J dorm." The NSM wants students from all legislative districts for lobbying. They residents who do their best to uphold the Teague reputation as hell-raisers," Zwilling said. "It didn't really get out of hand until the end of the semester. They (housing officials) encouraged us to conduct small-group meetings with the residents explaining the consequences of this. "She (Area Director Hunt) was threatened and racist comments were made. That's why it's a big deal," Zwilling said. Hunt refused comment, confirm ing only that the incident with the women in the car occurred and that the women in the car were black, while the Teague residents involved were white. She added, "It's much more than that, a hell of a lot more than that. r -CI WIp"S t , . The incident with the driver as well as the harassment of Hunt that followed were both discussed in the April 23 meeting, Zwilling said. "The people who did it (the ha rassment) were a very small group," Zwilling said. "They didnt let anyone know about it." "The racial issue seems to have taken a back seat," Sipe said. "This is a result of disciplinary problems, the history of Teague in general and the Teague tradition. This is the straw that broke the camel's back.
