The big news this week is the
opening of "Dangerous Liaisons" at
the Varsity on Franklin Street. The
highly-charged saga of sexual
gamesmanship in 1 8th century
France is directed by Stephen
Frears ("My Beautiful Laun
drette,'",Sammy And Rosie Get
Laid"), and is based on the cele
brated Christopher Hampton play
which he adapted from the novel,
"Les Liaisons Dangereuses" by
Choderlos De Lados. it stars Glenn
Close, John Malkovich and Michelle
Pfieffer, and features cinema
tography by Philippe Rousselot
("Hope And Glory") and costumes
from James Acheson ("The Last
Emperor"). Quite simply, it is
unmissable.

baseball scandal is as good as any
film made last year. The whole
thing is beautifully authentic and
has a wonderful cast that includes
Charlie Sheen, Christopher Lloyd,
and D.B. Sweeney as the legendary
"Shoeless"Joe. Director Sayles puts
in more than a cameo as the tall
journalist who sings "I'm Forever
Blowing Ballgames."
