soak up win at State

RALEIGH - "I always love
beating State. There's nothing more
to it than that," head UNC swim
coach Frank Comfort said following
his mens 131-H2 victory over the
host Wolf pack. The victory gave
UNC a 27-26 lead in the all-time series
against their Raleigh rivals.
"In December 5, they beat us. It's
the first time since then that they've
really seriously challenged us," Com
fort said. "They're a vastly improved
team and they really wanted to beat
us."
In the most dramatic finish of the
night, freshman Cameron Cole over
took State's Brian Dowling in the last
length of the final freestyle leg of the
200 I M to win with a time of 1:55.26.
UNC racked up 16 points with a
1-2-3 finish in the 500 free. Freshman
Ron ZuWallack came from behind
to win the event. ZuWallack never
looked back after taking over the lead
10 lengths into the race, finishing in
4:37.49. Marc Ferguson and Ralph
. Vick followed ZuWallack's lead to
finish second and third, respectively.
"Tonight was a night when we
raced to win events and do a lot of
. other scoring," Comfort said. "We
won the key races and that's what
was critical." Comfort now feels that
his swimmers have gained confidence
for the upcoming ACC meet, to be
held in Chapel Hill February 23-25.
UNC swimmers finished 1-2 in the
shortest freestyle event of 50 yards
and in the longest of 1,000 yards.

distance event.
A 1-2 finish in the 200 fly equally
helped UNC's team score, with Chris
Languell finishing in 1:51.12 and
John Davis in 1:54.55.
Croggon in the 100 free and Davis
in the 200 free rounded out a Tar
Heel sweep of the freestyle events.
Both garnered first place finishes with
Croggan winning in 46.60 and Davis
clocking in at 1:41.40.
Commenting on the overall rivalry,
Comfort said, "One of the fun things
is that this takes us ahead in the all
time series. That means something to
an old man. It may not to (the UNC
swimmers)." Comfort added, "We
had been leading in that series until
1976, and then they gradually caught
up with us."
State's strong diving corps helped
the Wolfpack keep the meet close.
State's Simon Jackson edged out Tar
Heel Nunzio Esposito in the one
meter event. In three-meter compe
tition, Wolfpack divers held senior
Andy Hunter and Esposito to third -and
fourth-place finishes.
UNC sophomore Matt Countie
appeared headed for a victory in the
200 backstroke, but State's Steve
Bradshaw caught him at the 150-yard
mark and coasted in with a time of
1:53.15. Countie finished second in
1:54.82.
Several Tar Heel swimmers chal
lenged State's Adam Fitzgerald in the
200 breaststroke. However, Fitzge
rald fended off an early challenge by
UNC's Gary Gauch and John
Fischetti.

in Chapel Hill, but the 6-3 sophomore

Monroe's point total reached 15 on

thereafter Monroe picked up his third
foul and went to the bench for the.

Rather than fold, State actually
increased its 37-30 lead, using eight
points from reserve guard Kelsey
Weems to outscore UNC 13-4 into
the locker room.
The Wolfpack shot 59.4 percent
(19-32) from the field in the opening
period and held an 18-7 rebounding
edge.
J.R. Reid scored UNC's first seven
points and had 14 by the 6:28 mark,
but the big junior managed only one
more attempt the rest of the night.
He spent the majority of the second
half watching from the bench as UNC
chased on defense and bombed from
the outside on offense.
State built its biggest lead of the
night at 61-39 on Brown's three-point
play with 16:04 remaining. Senior
guard Jeff Lebo, who was held
scoreless in the Clemson loss, tried
to rally the Tar Heels, pouring in 20
of his team-high 22 points after the
break.
