6The Daily Tar Heel Thursday, February 16, 1989 Sports ii i n Backcourt Frontcourt Depth Defense Coaching UNC With Lebo probably out again, King Rice takes the point. Rice is starting to get the ball to the right people in the right spots, Steve Bucknall will hit the treys. This group is the strength of this team, and they show it almost every night. Scott Williams, Kevin Madden and J.R. Reid are tough when they stay close to the hoop. Rick Fox proved what he can do when he goes to the hoop and gets out on the break. P. Chilcutt has been tentative on offense. Hubert Davis will get some PT. The Tar Heels give up more points per game than any team in the ACC at more than 80 ppg. But that figure is inflated because of their up-tempo style of play. Dean Smith says he only counts the losses (1 ,2,3,4,5), but he now has 19 straight 20-win seasons. Sir Smith has the 7th-highest win total in college basketball history. Edge Wake Forest Senior Cal Boyd will bury the three-pointer, but offers liitle else for the Deacs. Freshman point guard Derrick McQueen handles the ball and sees the court well. AII-ACC performer Sam Ivy does it inside, outside and on the boards. Freshman forward Chris King has slick moves to the hoop. Phil Medlin tries to play center. David Carlyle, a swingman, is a sharpshooter from outside, but contributes little else. Robert Siler found his jumper in the past year. Ralph Kitley is a banger inside. Though the Deacs don't give up a lot of points, it is misleading because of their wa!k-it-up style of basketball. Wake foes are hitting almost 50 from the field. Bob Staak has a 43-64 record at Wake, but his teams improve every year. Wake's slow-paced offense is a good match for their talent, but 'it's not always enough. 3 ye Devils deal womemi i t h c mi e c u it i v e d ef e at compiled by Dave Glenn Ivy, King lead young Deacons By BOBBY McCROSKEY Staff Wrfer Will the real North Carolina Tar Heels please stand up? After a stellar start without the services of. J.R. Reid, UNC has had a season with more ups and downs than a cheap roller coaster ride. And things don't look to be getting any easier when the Tar Heels face the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest tonight at 9 p.m. (ESPN) in the Smith Center. Wake Forest, you say? Not an easy win? Please be for real. The problem is that Wake Forest is for real. Sure, they are coming off a loss to Georgia Tech on Sunday. Their record is only one game above .500 this season. So how much trouble could this team give UNC? Wake is one of the most improved teams in the ACC this season. By combining young talent with experienced lead ership, the Demon Deacons have managed to surprise quite a few people along the way. As a team, Wake has been better than expected. They are among the league leaders in scoring defense, free throw percentage and three-point field goal percentage. They are led by Sam Ivy. The 6-foot-7 forward leads the team in scoring (15.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.3 rpg). He is a do everything player for Wake. He can hit the three-pointer, bury the short jumper, score inside and rebound with the best in the game. The Deacons will certainly look to him when they need a clutch basket. Wake's strength lies in the youth of their team. Despite starting three freshmen, the Deacons have been playing well in the ACC, picking up two conference wins. Ivy, along with freshmen Chris King (12.4 ppg), Derrick McQueen (9.3 ppg) and Phil Medlin (5.2 ppg) were instrumental in the Deacs' victory over Duke earlier this year. Along with Ivy, King will start at forward for Wake. He is shooting 52.8 percent from the field. He likes to shoot the mid-range jumper, but he has no qualms about taking the ball to the hoop. Medlin will start at center, but he has yet to prove himself as a force on either end of the court. McQueen is the point guard and he is extremely quick. Senior Cal Boyd (7.2 ppg) will start at shooting guard. Boyd has the ability to square up and hit the three pointer but other than that, he offers iittle to the half-court offense. Off the bench, Wake has Ralph Kitley. After losing his job earlier to Medlin, he has been relegated to a backup role. He's not the most talented player, but he is smart and will try to pound the Tar Heels' frontcourt. UNC will be without the services of senior guard Jeff Lebo for yet another game. He is still recovering from a slight fracture in his left foot. The injury occurred in Sunday's 85 67 win over Virginia. However, UNC is on an upswing with two straight victories, the latest coming over Old Dominion Tuesday evening. UNC also disposed of this same Wake Forest team 88-74 while shooting a blistering 74 percent in their first meeting in Greensboro. So what does all this mean? Simply put, the Tar Heels have to control Ivy and his freshmen cohorts, or the Deacs will be able to put another notch in their belt right beside the one with "Blue Devils" written on it. By DOUG HOOGERVORST Staff Writer DURHAM Duke fans were lining up outside Cameron Indoor Stadium at 5:30 Wednesday night. They had pitched their tents for the men's game with N.C. State on February 23rd and in so doing missed a thriller between the UNC and Duke women's basketball teams. Tied at 72-72, Duke's Sue Harnett ended the suspense when she hit a four-foot leaner with four seconds left, giving the Blue Devils a 74-72 win over the Tar Heels. The bucket ended Duke's 12-game losing streak and kept North Carolina reeling with 1 1 straight losses. Harnett could not be stopped all night and she finished as the game's top scorer with 32 points. Duke improved its record to 11-13, 1-10 in the ACC. Merlaine Oden led a balanced UNC attack with 15 points. North Carolina stands with a 9-16 overall record and is tied in the ACC cellar with Duke with a 1-10 mark. With nine seconds left, Duke called time and set up the final shot for Harnett. The Blue Devils looked to her all night and she responded. They went back to her again. "That was a set out-of-bounds play we call box," Duke coach Debbie Leonard said. "The kids ran their picks well and Robin Baker got (Harnett) the ball." For UNC, a mix-up on the def ensive assignments left a big mis match, with 5-foot-11 LeAnn Kennedy guarding the 6-4 Duke center. "When we went back on the floor, Mo (Oden) was supposed to be on (Harnett), but she went to Traci (Williams), and LeAnn had to pick her up, and she should have never have had to guard her," UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "I guess that in the heat of the battle that Mo just didn't concentrate." Concentration at the foul line was not a problem this time for the Tar Heels. North Carolina, who had shot poorly from the charity stripe throughout the losing skein, went 10-of-1 1 from the foul line. However, this time it was a lack of trips to the 15-foot line that hurt UNC. Duke attempted 31 free throws to the Tar Heels' 11 and made 13 more. Harnett's game-winning shot ended a hectic Tar Heel comeback. Midway through the second half, UNC went colder than liquid nitro gen, missing 14 straight shots over a 5:30 span. The Blue Devils made sure to take advantage of the oppor tunity, and turned a 55-50 UNC lead into a 63-55 Duke edge. "That was a key in the game," Hatchell said. "We sat on 55 for 14 straight misses. I knew they outscored us 13 to zero when we were on 55. We substituted. We changed the offense. We did everything we could to try to get something going." The Duke defense wasn't helping the UNC shooting woes. The Blue Devils had been soft in the first half, allowing North Carolina to shoot 50 percent, but in the locker room, they made an adjustment. Leonard put her troops into a junk 1-2-1-1 zone with 6-1 Traci Williams on top. Williams, who had a fine all around game with 10 points and nine rebounds, forced the Tar Heels out of sync. "Traci Williams had her best game of the year," Leonard said. "Her defense on the top of that zone was a big difference." Trying to generate any offense against the tough Duke zone, the Tar Heels looked inside and Oden and frosh Terrie Condery responded. Assists UNC 19 frtohnson 7 Duke 16 (Baker 7), Oden had two lay-ins and a basket from an offensive rebound and Condery got an easy two in a half court offense and hit a pair of foul shots. Together, the duo scored UNC's next 10 points and cut the lead to four, 69-65, with four minutes left. But when Condrey fouled out with 3:56 left, Hatchell was forced to shuffle. All of the UNC inside players were either strapped with foul trouble or fouled out, and Hatchell went with a quick lineup, inserting Sheri Anderson. The lack of size didn't hurt UNC as the team's traded baskets and a foul shot over the next two minutes. Then noted Blue Devil assassin, Liza Donnell, stepped to the forefront for North Carolina. , Donnell, who had 25 in the pre vious meeting this year, hit a running, sliding, fading 16-footer to draw UNC to within two and with 53 seconds left hit a pull-up jumper from the same spot to tie it. With Donnell's two closing shots, Leonard was understandably nervous. "I tell everyone that (Donnell) has two great games every year," Leonard said. "Tonight I thought she was going to have a great game in the last two minutes."
