Through the luck of the draw, or perhaps a latent sadistic streak on the part of the NCAA tournament selec tion committee, Michigan and North Carolina will play tonight in Lexing ton, Ky., with membership in the Elite Eight at stake. The curious part of the matchup (10 p.m., WRAL-TV, Ch. 5) is that it will mark the third consecutive year the lOth-ranked Wolverines and the fifth-ranked Tar Heels have met in the NCAAs. UNC (29-7) won both previous meetings in rather convinc ing fashion and will be a slight favorite to turn the hat trick this evening in Rupp Arena, site of the Southeast Region semifinals and final. The winner will meet either top seeded Oklahoma or Virginia in Saturday afternoon's regional final. But before anyone starts feeling too sorry for Michigan, it should be mentioned that this time the Wolve rines may actually have the advantage on several levels. First, of course, is the simple three-times-no-way revenge factor. As UNC coach Dean Smith said, "They're just a very powerful team, and well have to be at the top of our game if we expect to advance. WeVe knocked them out the last two years, and I don't like that psycho logical situation especially." Secondly, there's the addition-by-subtraction factor. We're referring, of course, to Bill Frieder, who resigned as Michigan's head coach the day before the NCAAs started in order to take the Arizona State job. Interim coach Steve Fisher, who spent seven years as Frieder's top assistant, has done an admirable job guiding the Wolverines through stiff challenges in the first two rounds. Had Frieder been in the coach's box for those two contests, Michigan might well be back in Ann Arbor gearing up for spring thaw. Not that Frieder wasn't successful in nine years his Michigan teams won 191 games. Problem was, the Wolverines' March performances never measured up to the public's expectations. Two years ago in Charlotte, UM's year ended with a 109-97 loss to the Tar Heels, who were led by then freshman J.R. Reid's 27-point, 10 rebound night. Last season in Seattle, UNC sent Michigan packing once again, as Scott Williams scored 19 points while Reid added 18 and a garne-high eight boards. Reid will be back in the lineup for the Tar Heels tonight after missing the 88-81 second-round win over UCLA for violating curfew. That's the good news. The bad news is that Glen Rice, Michigan's stud forward, is also still around. Rice, a 6-foot-7 senior, was named Big Ten player of the year after averaging 24.7 points and 6.2 rebounds this season. What's more, Rice has been at his best in tourna ment time, scoring 137 points in his last four NCAA outings (a 34.3 average), including 39 last season against the Tar Heels. "The number one focus for us on the offensive end is Glen Rice," Fisher said. "He's our first and foremost option. We've got to do everything we can to get Glen Rice his shots." Michigan's "1-A option," as Fisher puts it, is 6-10, 230-pound junior Terry Mills (11.2 points, 5.8 rebounds). The one-time Prop 48 casualty is similar to Syracuse's Derrick Coleman in that both players can dominate or flop depending on their moods. Joining Rice and Mills on the front line is Loy Vaught, a 6-9, 225-pound banger who averaged 13.9 points and a team-leading eight rebounds. Mark Hughes and Sean Higgins, both of whom could start for most teams, provide depth. Michigan's front line is imposing, but, according to Fisher, "the whole key is Rumeal (Robinson, the point guard). We need his decision-making, we need him playing with confidence and poise and not frustrated. He's playing well for us." The 6-2 junior doesn't get as much ink as Sherman Douglas and Mookie Blaylock, but Robinson (14.5 ppg) can really play. In last year's tour nament, he burned UNC for 29 points, and it'll take a premium defensive effort from Steve Bucknall and King Rice to prevent a repeat. Michigan interim coach Steve Fisher is one of the few in his profession who is even better than North Carolina's Dean Smith when it comes to winning percentage as a head coach. Smith enters the game with a career record of 667-189, a winning percen tage of .779, second among all active Division I coaches with at least 10 years experience. Fisher comes in with a perfect 1.000. He has won his only two games as head coach since Bill Frieder announced hours before the tourna ment began that he was becoming head coach at Arizona State. "I have the utmost respect for Coach Smith and I always have," Fisher said Wednesday. "It has been hard to deal with the pressures and things have been a little different. But IVe been a coach for 21 years and coaching is teaching. It doesn't matter whether it's high school, CYO or at Michigan, you have to have the same type of philosophy." Smith praised Fisher for the way he has handled the situation. "He has handled it extremely well. He has been poised and confident," Smith said. "It's a big jump from assistant coach, when you're making suggestions, to head coach, where you're making the decisions. He had to do it under a microscope and he should be congratulated."
