The Daily Tar HeelAugust 28, 19893 University lewis moves to establish task force for financial aid By ED DAVIS Staff Writer In an effort to head off what he says will soon be an urgent need for financial aid by University students, Student Body President Brien Lewis has announced the formation of a task force which will examine problems with the financial aid process. The task force, composed of stu dent leaders and administrators in volved in the financial aid process, will focus on coming up with solutions to the growing lack of funds for financial aid at UNC. "I would like to hold a series of round table discussions and try to come up with a set of recommendations to give to the' Financial Aid Office and the chancellor," Lewis said. "I see a lot of problems coming to a head, and they centralize in a way that will af fect the availability of financial aid." Lewis said there are several rea sons why student aid and scholarship money might be lacking in the near future. "The Student Stores has closed the Pit Stop, textbook prices are going up, there's talk of the University's food services being consolidated and the . Financial Aid Office is understaffed," Lewis said. ' Eleanor Morris, director of the University Financial Aid Office, ech- r V .V Brien Lewis oed Lewis's concerns. "We've been hit with new regulations that go into effect this week, and though they are required by federal law, we don't have anyone to implement them," Morris said. "I don't know what we're going to do." Morris said the new government regulations require schools to inter view every student who is granted a Stafford loan (previously called a guar anteed loan) before that student can be given any money. She said she thought the interviews "are a good idea, but we're talking about thousands of students, and it's not anything we can do in a two-week period at the beginning of school." Rutledge Tufts, general manager of the Student Stores, said that it is too early to tell exactly how much money the Student Stores will be able to give to scholarship and aid funds, but that he does expect a decrease. "Our sales are down and overall performance is down," Tufts said. "It's mainly due to the renovation and the closing of the Pit Stop, but as far as scholarship money is concerned, it's not going to be a major disaster by any means." Tom Shetley, director of auxiliary services for the University, manages a fund which licenses the University's trademarked logos and images out to merchandisers, and based on sales, the UNC Board of Trustees allocates a certain amount of this revenue to stu dent aid and scholarships. According to Shetley, revenue from licensed merchandise is up considera bly, so more funds may be available for financial aid. NDERGRADUATE COURT: SUMMER Session from June 1 to July 24 1 .
