Drop-add lines
soon to become
distant memoiry
By JASON KELLY
Staff Writer
Those infamously long drop-add
lines will be a thing of the past next
fall, when the University will
install a touchtone phone-in system
similar to the one now used at N.C.
State.
"Students will be able to call in
at any time from any touchtone
phone around the world and
instantly find out if they can get the
courses they want," University
Registrar David Lanier said.
"But we are doing more than just
redoing registration," he said. "The
University is switching to a data
base for storing student records and
integrating the entire registration
system. This new system will
hopefully eliminate cashier lines
and financial aid lines. There will
be no more (drop-add at) Woollen
Gym."
Under the phone-in system,
students would key in their
identification number to bring up
their records in the University
computer. Then the student would
key in the identification codes of
the classes he wanted to drop or
add.
A voice response system
employed by the computer would
prompt the student along the entire
process. The computer would pick
out a phrase from its script to tell
the student what to key in next or
the status of the course. "When you

need the script 'this course is
closed, the computer would play it
out for you," Lanier said.
"A big part of the system is the
script, which we are writing right
now," he said. "The computer has
to be able to respond to whatever
the student keys in.
Many students who are
dissatisfied with the present system
said they would welcome changes
in the registration system. "The
phone-in system sounds almost too
good to be true," said Drew
Kimball, a sophomore mathematics
major from San Diego, Calif.
"Anything that would get rid of
these beastly lines sounds great to
me.
Timur Tukel, a senior biology
major, was more cynical about the
present system. "I loathe and detest
the drop-add system," he said.
"Some underclassman has got the
class I need to graduate. I'm a
senior and I still have to wait until
2 o'clock for the freshmen to get
out of there. All they care about at
this school is the money."
Some students complained that
those who hadn't preregistered at
all were allowed into drop-add
early. Senior Mike Manlapas said,
"I would have been better off if I
hadn't preregistered at all. I
wouldn't have to wait, and I could
have gotten the classes I need. I got
none of the classes I needed
through preregistration."

Smith Center adds student seats
By SIMONE PAM
Staff Writer
About 291 lower-level seats will be
added to the Smith Center in time for
the beginning of the basketball season
in November, according to Smith
Center Director Jeff Elliott.
"The added seats should increase
the enthusiasm level in the Smith
Center and bring more students closer
to the floor," Elliott said.
The additional seats will come
from various sources within the Smith
Center, he said.
The number of seats allotted for
football recruits has been reduced,
and the remaining seats have been
moved out of the student section, he
said.
In addition, the armrests in some
retractable seats have been removed

Gov. James Martin's appointments
to the UNC Board of Trustees in July
left only one female on the board, and
some students and administrators are
concerned that women are
underrepresented. '
Martin can appoint two members
to the 13-member board each
gubernatorial term, and he chose to
reappoint Raleigh businessman John
Pope and appoint Arch Allen,
chairman of the Wake County
Republican Party.
Martin did not reappoint Barbara
Perry, although she said he promised
her the reappointment in February.
Perry, an attorney from Kinston, has
served on the board since 1985.
BOT chairman Robert Eubanks
said the decision not to reappoint
Perry was a disappointment. "The
process is tod political. To me it was
some kind of oversight."
Perry said Martin told her at a
party in February that she would be
reappointed. "He asked, 'Do you
want it (the reappointment)?' I said,
'Very much,' and he said, 'You've got
it,' " Perry said Tuesday.
David Prather, deputy
communications director for the
governor, said Martin's decision did
not necessarily mean Perry had not
done a good job. "Serving on the
Board of Trustees is a very
prestigious position. There is quite a
bit of competition for the available
spots, and he (Martin) can't appoint

to add 55 new seats in the student
section.
"Originally, when the Dean Dome
was constructed, there was supposed
to be 2,000 lower-level student seats,"
said Sean Wilkinson, Carolina
Athletic Association (CAA) ticket
chairman. The additional seats will
now bring the number of lower-level
student seats to more than 2,000.
According to Elliott, the
renovations will bring the student
seating capacity in the lower level to
about 2,050. Students will gain more
than 300 seats because of the reduced
number of recruiting tickets.
However, the 291 seats will not all be
added to the student sections, Elliott
said. "The seats not in the student
section will be for the football
recruits."

everyone.
Perry was contacted first by the
governor's office of appointments,
and then received a letter and
personal visit from Martin. "I really
think that the governor was
disappointed in himself," Perry said.
"He was sorry he hadn't contacted me
earlier so I could get the
reappointment in some other
fashion."
Eubanks said if he had realized
Martin was not going to reappoint
Perry, an effort would have been
made to have the Board of Governors
reappoint her. "But at the 11th hour,
there was nothing we could do."
The BOG makes four
appointments every term. This year,
the BOG reappointed Richard
Jenrette and William Darrity and
added newcomers John Medlin and
David Ward.
Although all BOT member's terms
began July 1, they will not be
officially sworn in until their meeting
tonight.
When Martin announced he also
was considering Allen for the
position, Student Congress made a
last-ditch effort to support Perry. At a
July 1 1 meeting, the congress passed
a resolution urging Martin to
reappoint Perry and questioning the
Pope's performance as a board
member.
Congress member Jurgen
Buchenau (Dist. 8), sponsor of the
resolution, said Pope should not have
been reappointed because of his

Renovations are costing the
University between $40,000 and
$50,000.
The new seats are being added to
sections 1 10 through 1 17, as well as a
portion of 109.
"We have been able to accomplish
a great deal in a short period of time,"
Elliott said. The process began last
fall under former CAA President
Carol Geer and was followed through
by CAA President Lisa Frye.
CAA officials and other students
are happy to hear of the increased
seating.
"The addition of the seats should .

controversial stance on women's
issues.
Elizabeth Dowd, the only
remaining female on the board, said
Martin's decision not to reappoint
Perry and the miscommunication with
her were unfortunate.
"I think it was an error on his
(Martin's) part," Dowd said. "With 60
percent women on campus, I think it's
unbelievable that we only have one
woman on the board."
Eubanks and Dowd both said that

women needing more representation

Patrick Emerson, a sophomore
from England, said the more students
on the floor, the better the enthusiasm
would be. "It is good that the athletic
administration is listening and
responding to what the students have
to say."
Bob D'Arruda, a senior from
Fayetteville, said CAA members
should be commended for their work.
"(The new seats) will create more of a

Frye said student feedback has

would not seriously undermine the;
board's effectiveness.

Eubanks said. -
Dowd said, "I think we have a;

us really are concerned with
minorities, including women."
The next appointments to the board
will be made in 1991. Perry said she
would like to be given the
opportunity to serve again. She is
being honored at the board's dinner
tonight.
