The Daily Tar HeelFriday, September 8, 19895 Sports UNC football opeiros 19S9 By ANDREW PODOLSKY Assistant Sports Editor And so it begins: the 1989 North Carolina football season. For some, Saturday startw a new era for UNC a time when we can still b . proudly wearCarolinablue.atime when .we can still say we're tied for first. ., v For others, Saturday continues the .. . worst football season in Chapel Hill t j, history. We'll say it again, 1-10. More . .. than likely, in four months we'll be in .::. He's Not (o.k., Molly's for you frat j; tybaggers) eloquently discussing how our Heels broke even in 1989, winning a few games we shouldn't have and losing a few by astronomical scores. But you never know what lies ahead s, ior this season . . . Saturday, at 4 p.m. in Kenan Sta v dium we get our first look at this young team when they open the season against ;-VML The Keydets (the Keydets?) lost io(.; their opener last week to East Tennes r .'v. see State, 17-16, on a late field goal. !.:;. UNC is 1 5-6-1 against this Division (f. I-AA foe. VMTs Jim Shuck begins his first season as a head football coach r 1 with 10 starters returning from the 2-9 1988 season. Expect the Keydets (come to think of it, that sounds like a play on the word "Cadet." Nice try guys) to be fired up: UNC is the only Division I-A school that they face this year. Predicting the VMI offense is easy. They run the wishbone offense, and ran the ball 57 times last week for 219 yards. VMI threw nine passes, com pleting just two. Keydet sophomore halfback Marcus Mines rambled for 86 yards on 18 carries. Travis Mabrey and Steve Roenker join Mines in the backfield. Sopho more Tony Douglas starts at quarter back, where he'll likely do little else than hand off and run. He ran for 27 yards and threw only four passes last week. Junior split end Mark Rumph (zip receptions last week) will feign going out for passes. VMTs small offensive line includes tackles Jef f Ziegler (6-0, 228) and Todd Northrup (6-2, 225), guards Beau Quattrone (6-1, 256) and Matt Metheney (6-1, 237) and center Joe Sokolowski (6-2, 235). UNC's offen sive line outweighs VMTs by an aver age of 36 pounds at each position. Hmm. Shuck has bigger problems on de fense. Two-year starter Lionel Taylor anchors the line at nose guard, with Dap Tillery and Mike Perfetti at the tackles. They're tough. The lineback ers boast leading returning tackier and two-year starter Jeff Barnes, along with Mike Kemp, Chris Rule and Wayne Purcell. They aren't bad either. The secondary has some big prob lems though. Last year's starters, ranked fourth in Division I-AA pass defense, are all gone. Mark Cager, Brian Pan nell, George Inge and Craig Wright will try to stop a potentially explosive UNC passing attack. They yielded 216 yards on 18 passes last week. Last year UNC opened the season with a 3 1 -10 loss to South Carolina and lost to five Top 20 teams by a combined margin of 191-48. Chalk it up to brains and shrewd planning that UNC picked the (cough) Keydets to open 1989 against. It's possible a win on Saturday might be the boost this team needs to . . . who knows? American Heart Association' DTH Picks of the Week Before we say anything, a note from above: Read our football preview (in sert) or a total of 96,069 manhours will have gone to waste. Thanks to all 12 of you. Back to business. The Daily Tar Heel prognasticators suffered in the first round, going 32-18 (.640). Hell "the Greek" did better. For the record, here's our system for picking games: predict every ACC game, pick every game between two Top 25 teams, then search out the most difficult match-ups left. Then delve into days of research (yeah, right). A new twist is the addition of a "Guest Picker of the Week." Each week we'll select a campus celebrity (or just someone we like) and force them to pick the games. The first taker of this dubious position is Kevin (no smart ass nick-name or we'll probably get fired) Schwartz, the business and ad vertising director of our own DTH. So if you have a celebrity who you'd like to have try his (her) hand at game selection, just drop us a note. But back to the smutty world of our panel. Off to an early lead are the expe rienced if not somewhat more crusty and cocky Dave (I live for the pres sure of being expected to win) Glenn, Andrew (going through really intense L.L.W.) Podolsky and the youthful, innocent Jamie (Guns n') Rosenberg. Each sports a really keen 7-3 record. John (have nifty new mountain bike, will travel short distances) Bland trails the gridiron gods by a mere game with a 6-4 showing, while Jay (yeah, but I won the Illinois game, ny ah, ny ah) Reed languishes in last place with a dismal 5 5 performance. Don't worry Jay, some one else will dethrone you soon with a more pathetic showing than that, but probably not in the near future. Ahh, but enough mudslinging for now. Onward ho to this week's veri table potpourri of picks.
