The Daily Tar HeelMonday, September 18, 19897' ! Sports u By NEIL AMATO Staff Writer What is a Billiken? The UNC field hockey team didn't care. The Tar Heels walloped the what-ever-they-ares from St. Louis Univer sity, 7-1 , on the AstroTurf Field Friday to up their record to 4-0. Freshman Imke Lempers, a native of the Netherlands, scored four goals, including a second-half hat trick, as North Carolina closed out its two-game home stand. Junior midfielder Laurel Hershey also tallied twice in the second half. During the two wins, the Tar Heels putscored their opponents 18-1. For the season, North Carolina has scored 29 goals, 10 of them by Lempers, while, only giving up two. ' Seven minutes into the contest, play was halted due to lightning. After a 30- Missimmo sets record in men's soccer loss From staff reports COLUMBIA, S.C. History re peated itself Sunday afternoon before 3,800 soccer fans at The Graveyard in South Carolina. The USC men's soccer team defeated North Carolina, 3-2, reminding the Tar Heels of last year's NCAA South Regional Final, when the Gamecocks ended UNC's season with a 3-1 triumph. But some new history was made Sunday as well. At the game's 26:01 mark, UNC striker Derek Missimo scored the 33rd goal of his career, which lifted him out of a three-way tie to stand alone as North Carolina's all-time lead ing scorer. ! Missimo, a 6-5, 215-pound junior from Bedford, Texas, scored 13 and 12 goals, respectively, in his freshman and sophomore seasons and already has eight in just six games so far this year. His goal Sunday pushed him past Tony Johnson (1979-82) and Mark Devey (1982-86) on the all-time list. Volleyball wins two, loses one The North Carolina womens's vol leyball team went 2-1 over the week end, with victories over Louisville and CU Friday and Sunday and a loss to Soccer ihg up for a deficit in speed with field savvy, and providing one of the key aspects in UNC's win. I "I was especially happy with Emily today," coach Anson Dorrance said. "She came in this year after having worked herself to death this summer that shows me that she is intrinsically motivated, and today showed us that it was well worth taking a chance on her. She was outstanding." Best Dirty Look Julie Guarnotta, forward, and not a force to be reckoned with. UNC-State matches are always physical, and this was no exception. After State's Jode Osborn committed one of the more blatant of the game's 25 fouls, Guarnotta hopped up to her feet and threw Osborn a look that Attila the Hun would have backed off from. . Best Feet Kris Lilly, forward. Trying to get a ball out from under Lilly's churning feet is like trying to stop a ceiling fan with your tongue. Lilly, though only a freshman, has provided UNC with a tremendous lift and stands second on the team with seven goals already. Though she didn't score in Sunday's match, her contribu tions were outstanding. ; The scoring was opened, though, at the 40:10 mark. Freshman Rita Tower drove down the left side past two State defenders and chipped the ball across the goal to Louellen Poore, who knocked it in over a diving Lindsay Brecher. : At the 49:05 mark, Shannon Higgins GREAT HALL (UNC STUDENT UNION) Tuesday, September 19th Wednesday, September 20th Thursday, September 21st 7:30 pm each night sponsored by Maranatha Campus Ministry scores. minute delay, the teams went at it again. UNC coach Karen Shelton didn't think the stoppage influenced her squad. "I don't think it really had an impact on the game," Shelton said. "It was so early, we seemed to not really lose anything." Whether the delay affected UNC or not, it wasn't until the second half that the Tar Heels got on track. After first half scores by Lempers and junior for ward Peggy Anthon, UNC poured it on in the second period, putting five balls in the net. Just 14 seconds into the second half, Hershey took a pass from forward Kathy Staley, who had stolen the ball from a Billiken stick. Hershey, a Hummel stown, Pa. native, poked the ball past SLU goalkeeper Wendy Sammons to give UNC a 3-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Lempers ::SI;::SSB4-.-. .-. UNC's final tally came off the toes of forward Pam Kalinoski. Driving down the left side, Kalinoski sent a worm-burner from 22 yards out into the goal to twist the lid and seal the Tar Heels' seventh victory. cj Now OpEN For OJNCIH MoNdAy-FRidAy 11:50 AM-2:00 pM Daily Specials Large Parties Welcome Reservations accepted for groups of six or more . located at NCNB Plaza 967-7145 M1 Rice and Checo - two men you don't want POWER Ifoimr as picked up the ball in the Billiken end and fed right wing Cathy Osmers, who dished to Anthon. The junior from St. Louis charged hard toward Sammons, who came out aggressively. Anthon pushed the ball out in front and then collided with Sammons, who knocked the ball away and, a la Lawrence Tay lor, upended the Tar Heel forward and sent her tumbling to the turf. . Five minutes after Sammons' tackle, Lempers made it 4-0 on a penalty corner goal. On a play designated "4A" by Shelton, Anthon hit in to midfielder Leslie Lyness. Lyness pushed the ball left to Hershey as Lempers circled around to the right. Lempers, the Tar Heels' main threat on penalty corners, took the pass from Hershey and rock eted a 1 5-yarder into the far corner past a befuddled Sammons. Before coming over from Holland, Footbal1 but kept it himself this time, diving out of bounds at the UNC 28 for a first down and, in essence, a Wildcat vic tory. Sixty minutes earlier, the Wildcats sprung from the gate on the wet Com monwealth turf and galloped 72 yards in 1 1 plays for the game's lone touch down. Rawls left, Rawls right and Rawls up the middle with a 17-yard Maggard to Meece hookup mixed in for good measure brought the Wildcats to the UNC seven yard line. Maggard pitched wide left to Rawls, who had only UNC's Reggie Clark and Torin Dom to beat to the corner of the Tar Heel end zone. It wasn't much of a race, however, with Rawls winning by several lengths. Willis' extra point put the Wildcats up 7-0. After the Tar Heel defense and the superb punting of UNC's Scott McAl ister including a bounce-aided 66 yarder kept the Wildcats at bay, UNC mounted a threat early in the second-quarter. With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, a 17-yard burst by Benefield and an 18-yard jaunt by Jordan put the Tar Heels deep in Kentucky territory. But, on a third-and-seven play at the Wildcat 13, Joey Jauch couldn't hold onto Hall's timing pass in the end zone. UNC settled for a 29-yard Gwaltney field goal. The Wildcats responded immediately with a 10-play, 48-yard drive capped by a 33-yard Willis field goal that gave Kentucky a 10-3 lead. The Tar Heels threatened again on their final possession of the first half, using two Hall runs and two quick passes to move down to the Kentucky 33 yard line. Brown sent in Gwaltney for a 49-yard field goal attempt on a third-and-one play with 11 seconds remaining. His attempt was blocked by Kentucky linebacker Jeff Brady, who charged through the UNC line to get a piece of Gwaltney's low liner. In fact, penalty-corner execution is something Shelton knows her team has to work on in order to be successful. "Our execution improved a little bit, but it's still not where it needs to be," Shelton said. "If we're going to be a national championship caliber team, then we need to have a higher percent age of execution on those corners." With 18 minutes remaining, Lem pers got her third goal on an assist from Staley. The two worked a picture-perfect give-and-go with Lempers nailing one past Sammons. The Billikens got on the board from a penalty corner five minutes later. Lempers closed out the scoring at 28:48 when she took a pass from An thon on the left and sent a sizzler to the near post. Lempers scored what was perhaps the prettiest goal of the night in the first half. After stealing the ball at midfield, Lempers weaved her way around sev eral defenders before driving one to Sammons' right.
