Fine Young Cannibals prepared to

1989 has been a dream year for the
Fine Young Cannibals, who will bring
their intelligent, soul-flavored dance
pop to Cameron Indoor Stadium at Duke
University tonight.
While many critics have lumped the
band into the "one-hit wonder" heap,
Cannibals Roland Gift, David Steele
and Andy Cox have dominated the radio
airwaves for the past several months
with their album The Raw and the
Cooked and its singles, "She Drives Me

The history of Fine Young Canni
bals can be traced to the breakup of the
Beat in 1982. Singers Ranking Roger
and Dave Wakeling formed the band
General Public, leaving songwriters
Steele and Cox in search of a singer.
The fledgling band went so far as to
make an appeal for a singer on MTV.
Finally, Steele and Cox interviewed
and hired Gift, a charismatic saxophon
ist in Acrylyx, a band which had opened
for the Beat.
The band was treated as a joke dur

by I.R.S. Records head Miles Copeland;
a complex legal settlement held Steele
and Cox contractually bound to I.R.S.
Taking the name Fine Young Can
nibals from the 1960 B movie All the
Fine Young Cannibals, the band re
leased an eponymous album in 1985.
The album generated a tremendous
response overseas, but was largely
overlooked in America despite the hit
single "Johnny Come Home."

batical after its debut. Steele and Cox
worked as a production team, lending
their skills to bands such as Pop Will
Eat Itself and the Wee Papa Girls. Gift
worked as an actor, playing roles in
Sammy and Rosie Get Laid and Scan
dal. The band's only activity during
this period was contributing a cover of
the Buzzcocks' "Never Fallen In Love"
to the soundtrack of Jonathan Demme's
Something Wild.
I.R.S. finally managed to lure Fine
Young Cannibals back into the studio
last year. The band cut the more poised

The Raw and the Cooked with the aid of
Prince sideman David Z. Since its re
lease, the album has established Fine
Young Cannibals as this year's wildly
successful British export. The Raw and
the Cooked has been certified double
platinum and is still enjoying a run of
several months at the top of the interna
tional charts.
In concert, Fine Young Cannibals
rely more on presence than flashy the
atrics. The band pulls covers from a
virtually unmatched smorgasbord of
influences. Few acts can switch from

Smokey Robinson to the Buzzcocks in
the blink of an eye. Of course, Gift and
company also have two albums' worth
of material from which to draw. Expect
to hear all of this year's dance floor hits,
from the Prince-ish funk of "She Drives
Me Crazy" to the latest single, "Don't
Look Back." The band fears being
pigeonholed into a musical style more
than anything, so at least a diverse
show is guaranteed.
Opening for the band will be new
comer Neneh Cherry, whose single
"Buffalo Stance" and album Raw Like
Sushi were lauded as being among the
most progressive musical stylings of
1989. Cherry is now trying to prove
herself as a road performer. From ad
vance word, she has managed to get the
audience dancing even before the
Cannibals hit the stage. Also on the bill
is an all-female a cappella band, the
Mint Juleps.
Despite rumors of discord and pos
sible breakup in the wake of the mem
bers various side projects, Fine Young
Cannibals remains a close-knit group
that lives to perform in concert. Get
ready, Triangle, because tonight Fine
Young Cannibals is set to drive you
crazy with perhaps the most dance
ready tour of the season
Office to post
parking permit list
A student parking placement list will
be posted each Friday at the Transpor
tation and Parking Services office.
Students assigned a parking space
have a week to pick up their permits.
Those still on the waiting list can check
their status in the office. Office hours
are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Fellowship campus minister, said his
organization helped students in a crisis
situation, and there were other support
groups in the area that support young
pregnant women. "Convenience does
not outweigh the taking of human life."
Sharon Sentelle, co-founder of UNC
Students for Life and chairwoman of
the UNC College Republicans, said the
congress was going beyond its jurisdic
tion by passing resolutions concerning
abortion.
"I think that Student Congress is
elected to further student affairs on
campus, and I do not see that this reso
lution does, that in any way. It would
seem to me that this is a clear case of
people getting power and wanting to
jump on the bandwagon with a contro
versial issue."
Student Congress member Todd
Wyatt (Dist. 4), a co-sponsor of the
resolution, said the argument that Stu
dent Congress was not representing the
student body could be used in any case
and was not specific to this one. If the
students are not pleased with the repre
sentation provided by congress, then
next election they can vote the mem
bers they believe unsatisfactory out, he
said.
In reference to the resolution, Wyatt
said, "It's a fundamental freedom
the right to make a very personal and
private choice. It can't be dictated by
anybody."
