Canadian director Norman Jew
ison last gave us Moonstruck. Here
he translates to the screen Bobbie

novel about a young girl (Emily Lloyd)
who comes of age in the aftermath of
the Vietnam war. Bruce Willis is her
uncle, still scarred after all these years.

SEA OF LOVE
Director Harold Becker brilliantly
captures the paradoxes of New York
City: its vibrant culture and its mis
erable loneliness. Al Pacino is the
. loner, a New York cop who's assigned
to catch a kinky killer who murders
people at the peak of their sexual
excitement while playing an old 45
of "Sea of Love." Even though the
film does not deliver all the thrills
and excitement it promises, Pacino
is excellent as the mournful cop. Also
starring a gutsy Ellen Barkin and a
vibrant John Goodman. Carolina Blue
and White, South Square
sex, lies and videotape
Steven Soderburgh won the top
prize at the Cannes Film Festival with
this exploration of, well ... sex, lies
and videotape. It's sensual, erotic, and
funny, but don't believe people who
tell you it's a comedy. This one will
be around for a while a real coup
for intelligent, low-budget independ
ent film-making. With stunning act
ing from James Spader, Andie
MacDowell, Peter Gallagher and
Laura San Giacomo. Varsity The
atre PARENTHOOD
Ron Howard's comedy-drama
about the woes of family life is truly
an ensemble affair, focusing on three
very different families. It's hardly
surprising that the movie eventually
gives two thumbs up to procreation,
but it's a close run thing, and pro
vides much food for thought as it
roller-coasters to its conclusion. Fea
turing an excellent cast, including
Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, Mary
Steenburgen, Tom Hulce, Dianne
Wiest, Jason Robards and Keanu
Reeves.

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY
12
Can men and women sleep to
gether and still be friends in the
morning? That's what this delight
fully adult comedy is all about. Billy
Crystal gives the performance we have
come to expect from such a genius,
and Meg Ryan is growing up nicely.
With Carrie Fisher. Ram Triple, South.

INDIANA JONES AND THE
LAST CRUSADE
Indy blows the Nazis away in his
quest for the Holy Grail, before fi
nally riding off into the sunset (liter
ally). Better than Temple, not as good
as Raiders, the highlight is the in
spired pairing of Harrison Ford with
Sean Connery, who plays his Dad.
Directed by Steven Spielberg. Plaza
DEAD POETS SOCIETY
This wonderful story of an unor
thodox schoolteacher who inspires
his young students with the passion
and spirit of poetry is one of the year's
finest films. It is joyful, tragic, and
totally inspiring. Robin Williams gives
his finest, most controlled perform
ance to date. Directed by Peter Weir
(Witness). Willowdaile
THE ABYSS
James Cameron's underwater spe
cial effects extravaganza has come
under some criticism. But he didn't
make The Terminator and Aliens in
order to change tack now. The Abyss
has the tension and drama you ex
pect from one so well-versed in the
medium of suspense. If only he'd
ditched all the E.T. stuff. Willowdaile,

WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF
A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN
Pedro Almodovar is the most ex
citing thing to come out of Spain
since the Armada. This, his most
successful film to date, is about sex,
lip-synching, gazpacho, Middle East
ern terrorists and over-sensitive taxi
drivers. Little wonder that it should
be the wackiest, most wonderful for
eign film of last year. In Spanish,
with subtitles. Don't miss it!! Friday
at 7 and 9:30 pm. Admission $1 .50
ALTERED STATES
William Hurt stars as the scientist
who becomes his own guinea pig of
primal research. Suspenseful and of
ten scary, this semi-science-fiction
drama comes from colorful British
director Ken Russell (Women in Love,
Lair of the White Worm). Friday and
Saturday at midnight.
WHAT'S UP TIGER-LILY?
Back in the days when Woody
Allen was the funniest man in film,
he bought the rights to a Japanese
James Bond-style thriller and re
dubbed the entire thing with his own
script, producing one of the most sus
tainedly hilarious comedies you'll ever
his 'barbaric YAWP' in the extraordinary
see. Saturday at 7 and 9:30 p.m.
THE LION IN WINTER
A star-studded cast feature in this
historical drama that chronicles the
intrigue over the successor to King
Henry II. Katherine Hepburn heads
the list, with support from Barbra
Streisand, Peter OToole, Jane Mer
row, Timothy Dalton and Anthony
Hopkins. Sunday at 7 and 9:30 p.m.
MR. SMITH GOES TO WASH
INGTON This marvelous Frank Capra film
is about a man (Jimmy Stewart) who
benignly becomes a U.S. Senator only
to discover corruption is rife on Capi
tol Hill. Jean Arthur is the leading
lady who helps him win the day.
