Elvis is not digging at Graceland From Associated Press reports MEMPHIS, Tenn. One thing the people at Elvis Presley's house never run short of is rumors, so they're put ting out the word early that the digging set to begin Wednesday night at Graceland is nothing sinister. . Crews are resealing the basement .wall, that's all, said Todd Morgan, a spokesman for the Presley residence and its souvenir shopping center. The three-story, white-columned home, called Graceland, draws 600,000 tourists a year. Rumors that Presley, who died 1 2 years ago, was alive set off a flurry of reported Elvis sightings a year or so ago. Whenever construction projects get under way at Graceland, the phones start ringing, Morgan said. "The sim plest of household chores at Graceland become international headlines." An error dating to 1823 caused Pennsylvania statesman John Dickin son to end up in former Rhode Island Gov. Stephen Hopkins' spot in the portrait that hangs outside the House speaker's office. The mistake was discovered more than a decade ago, but no one did any thing about it until Hopkins' descen dents kicked up a fuss. It finally will be fixed today with the unveiling of a new portrait but Rhode Islanders will have to settle for a picture of Hopkins' son, Rufus. "Amazing," said Kathryn O'Hare, spokeswoman for Secretary of State Kathleen Connell, whose office is in charge of Statehouse tours and guide books. "It's kind of comical, actually." Stephen Hopkins left no portraits behind when he died in 1785, and when artist John Trumbull sought him out L. Mrs. Wells and her husband, Ralph, count themselves among 82.5 million Americans who feed their wild, feath ered friends at least once a week. But the couple said many people aren't clear about when to feed birds, what kinds of birds to feed or how much they should eat, so they formed a society last month to share tips. "Our goal is to make these people as well-educated as we can," said Mrs. Wells, who is executive director of the National Bird-Feeding Society based in suburban Northbrook.
