On Sunday, UVa.'s Bobby Rivell hit
a solo homer in the first, and his three

Ithe Tar Heels' improved second-stanza
play.
j "I thought he was the key to our
comeback," Bedell said. "In the second
half, he showed why he's one of the
b4st attackmen in the game. He was
creating things from behind the goal,
which is his job."
V Virginia, which jumped out to a six-
goal lead behind a first-quarter hat trick
from Perry Frazer, outshot the Tar Heels
25-20 in the first half. After Bedell
Chopped the lead to 3-2 with a goal, the
Cavaliers put in three goals over the

Virginia's Kevin Stock (2-0) and
Keith Seiler (second save) turned in an
outstanding relief effort, holding UNC

Starter Derek Manning (2-1) took
the loss for North Carolina. UNC fresh

singles winning percentage.
The man with UNC's best record is
No. 4 Andre Janasik at 1 8-5. He had to
endure two tough sets with Alex Ortiz
before winning 7-5, 7-5. Janasik blew a
one-break lead in both sets. He led 4-1
in the second set before Ortiz broke him
twice to move ahead 5-4. Janasik bore
down, however, and won the last three
games to avoid a tiebreaker. The match
ended when Ortiz double-faulted after
jumping ahead 30-0 in the final game.
"I didn't want to go three sets,"
Janasik said. "I came in on his back

Villani that scored Brad Woodall and
Ron Maurer.
Villani continued his hot streak in
Saturday's 13-7 win. The third base

UNC also scored five in the second,
three on a Todd Nichols homer. Fresh

the earlier games."
Morris' ACC lineup will be similar
to the one used against the Hokies.
Likely doubles combinations are Jana
sik and Steinour (4-5) at No. 1 , Johnson
and Chris Mumford (4-0) at No. 2 and
Jones and Joe Frierson (14-3) at No. 3.
Jones and Frierson are 23-1 at No. 3 in
their careers and are unbeaten at that
position this season.
''One of the encouraging things is
our doubles is getting better," Morris
said. "We almost won the Duke match
by winning all three doubles."
Solid singles play like the Tar Heels
had against Virginia Tech will be nec
essary once again if the Tar Heels are to
win the ACCs. Said Morris, "I don't
think in either the Clemson match (a 5
4 win) or Duke match did we play our
best singles."
