The school, which currently resides in a Franklin Street building, would need $8 million to fund a new facility. The school has set a fund-raising goal of $16 million to $18 million during UNC's Bicentennial Celebration. But the School of Social Work means something else for Kuralt. It was a place his father, a 1 93 1 graduate from the University's business school, spent a lot of time when Charles Kuralt was a young child. "He (Wallace Kuralt) sort of drifted into social work," Kuralt said. "He found he was good at it. He would Hitchhike to Chapel Hill and spend the week taking courses at the School of Social Work. He was really an innova tive social worker." His father estab lished programs such as planned par enthood and public day-care centers in Mecklenburg County. Charles Kuralt already has produced a 20-minute video, featuring an array of social programs statewide, to help persuade businesses and entrepreneurs to invest in the School of Social Work. Although the school has caught his unwavering attention, Kuralt has other ties to the University from his under graduate days. "I used to hang around RTVMP people and did some radio shows, but my real interest was being editor of The Daily Tar Heel." As editor, he did a lot of editorial writing, he said, and there seemed to be an inexhaustible supply of issues and people to write about. "Well, 1954 was the year of Brown vs. Board of Education, and we wrote a lot about the integration of schools," Kuralt said. "Joe McCarthy was a con troversial figure, and the Tar Heel, of course, lost no chance to ridicule the senator. And in those years, we held an anti-big-time sports view." The skepticism students have ex pressed toward athletic fund-raising organizations such as the Rams Club (the Educational Foundation) in recent years is reflective of the students' atti tudes in the mid-1950s, he said. "We used to attack the Educational Foundation. I've kind of softened my feelings about that now. I really admire Dean Smith. Among all the coaches in the country, he is really the most honor able." Kuralt graduated from UNC in 1955 with a degree in history, taking with him the Abernethy Award for excel lence in student journalism and mem berships in the Orders of the Old Well, Grail and Golden Fleece. He went to work as a reporter and later a columnist for The Charlotte News. He said that it was a wonderful experience and that he never expected to leave. "It wasn't possible to go to work for television in the state. No station really had a news department." Then he won the Ernie Pyle Memo rial Award in 1957 for a collection of his "People" columns that simply were "about ordinary folks around town." CBS heard about the award and offered him a news writing job in New York City. He took the job. "I spent about 1 0 years covering real news wars and politics and what not. But I always knew from my experience on the newspaper that I liked doing little feature news. I never got used to the deadline pressure and competitive ness (of 'real news')." Kuralt's chance at feature news came in 1967 with a new series called "On the Road" in which Kuralt would travel all over the United States interviewing ordinary folks, finding out what makes , small towns tick. His travel experi ences also are the basis of his just- , finished book, "A Life on the Road." Kuralt attributes in part his love of telling the stories behind people's lives to his Southern upbringing. "North Carolina has always been a place where you could hear a good yarn," he said.
